If you've read any of my previous posts, you'll know i'm a huge fan of John Digweed. I listen to his podcats and live mixes regularly. I'm assuming John has ultimate veto power when it comes to the guests he chooses for TRANSITIONS SHOW - like his mixes - are stellar. Last May, he had NY native ROYAL SAPIEN (aka BEN MAUTNER) on the show. Ben had worked tirelessly to create an EPIC ableton mix called STACKED. His appearance on the TRANSITIONS show, was the debut of the mix. According to Ben, [...]
Congratulations to Arc In Round ! The band just signed to Pennsylvania-based record label La Société Expéditionnaire (who has released albums from fine artists like Strand of Oaks, Lewis & Clarke, Soars, etc.). Arc In Round are currently on tour with The War on Drugs , and will be releasing a full-length with their new label.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 Brown Recluse is firmly grounded in Philadelphia. The band's latest album, Evening Tapestry (released on the iconic indie-pop label Slumberland last spring) was recorded at Sound In The Round Studios in Philly. They've even got a song called "Conshohocken Curve." Despite their burgeoning reputation—Brown Recluse has played with Matt and Kim and Tokyo Police Club, among others—the six-piece band remains committed to their roots. Brown Recluse performs with Arc in Round and Royal Shoals at 7:30 p.m. at Kung Fu Necktie; tickets to the 21+ show are $8. [...]

If you missed Delaware Water Gap, PA's Lewis & Clarke when they last came to Philly for the Folkadelphia series, then you probably shouldn't sleep on tonight's performance at Kung Fu Necktie. Lou Rogai and crew will be taking a break from recording their new album, which will be released via La Société Expéditionnaire, to do a run of shows with labelmate Chicago's Daniel Knox, who is fresh off a UK tour with The Handsome Family. Joining them will also be Judson Claiborne, who will also be visiting from the Windy City. Expect one of my favorite [...]
Single of the Week Lady Gaga - Judas (Interscope Records) So this is what it feels like to be beaten about the face repeatedly with a leather-studded crucifix (if such a thing does not exist it will by the time the video has wrapped). Thank Easter it's Gaga! Having already exhausted the egg motif months previously we are now treated to a tribute to the season's other signifier: the dirty, cheating, Jesus-kissing Judas. An ode to wrong 'uns everywhere, essentially this is Gaga's warped take on 'Bad Boys' by Gloria Estefan [...]

One of my favorite "local" bands is Lewis & Clarke. They call their music a lot of things ("avant-folk" or "Neo Baroque Post Folk"). I call it beautiful. Lou and company recently performed in Philly for WXPN. They have a couple of live recordings they are sharing from the session. The band is busy recording a full-length LP due out this year (I hope). Plus, the recently redid their website . Check 'em out as you get ready for your post-tax day weekend. My [...]

I have been a bit out of touch on the blog lately and missed a few days due to the rigors of my non-blog life (the farce of 'real' work) so I needed to come back with a couple of tracks at least! Well, lucky enough there are a few artists that I truly enjoy that are releasing some new songs for all our listening pleasure. Lets start with this mini-mixtape! ~ Marissa Nadler is hard at work finishing up her upcoming self titled album (June [...]

Columboid is a group consisting of members of past/present members of Coyote , Man Man , Vaz , Lewis and Clarke and Icy Demons , who have recently released a video for their track "Route Notes." The video features an array of 8mm stock footage mixed in with the band's live performance in a basement. In case you were wondering what Columboid sounds like, their facebook page describes them as "dirty primal synth new wave minimalism from Brooklyn." Should this track tickle your fancy, you can head [...]

When I interviewed Fred Knittel about his Folkadelphia Concert Series/senior project, his voice was loaded with excitement for Philadelphia's modern folk scene (read The Deli's interview here ). After all, it is a bustling community that the 22-year-old Drexel undergrad and host of Y-Rock's Folkadelphia radio show is deeply rooted in. So you can say that's the overall purpose of his February series at Johnny Brenda's, which will feature live performances and interviews with the bands: to draw others into that sonic landscape he's so fond of and to bridge that gap between old school folk traditions and its [...]

Sorry, our server took a long lunch break earlier. I don't blame it. It's beautiful out. This will be short and sweet because we've been ready to enjoy this weekend and the weather for a long time now. (Damn server!) You've probably noticed this flier (above) on our website all week. Well, you should really show up for our show this Saturday at The Ox w/ Grimace Federation , Grandchildren , Power Animal , Ryat , and Circadian Rhythms . It's going to be badasss! We'll be there. You should definitely join us. Now go out [...]

Last night, the National Academy Of Recording Arts & Sciences hosted its 53rd annual Grammy Awards ceremony, handing out trophies in 31 categories ranging from Song Of The Year to Best Hawaiian Music Album to Best Album Notes. While we generally don't take much stock in who they had hand out awards to, there were a handful of noteworthy performances from last night's telecast - Cee-Lo dressed like Elton John circa 1973 with The Muppets , Mick Jagger honoring the late Solomon Burke and John Mayer, Norah Jones and Keith Urban paying tribute to Dolly [...]

Arcade Fire e Lady Antebellum sono i vincitori inaspettati dei Grammy Awards 2011 : i due gruppi si sono aggiudicati i premi più ambiti ovvero Album of the Year e Record of the Year.

Click below for the full list! The 2011 Grammy Awards were full of surprises tonight. Lady Gaga arrived in a "womb" and was "incubating" on the red carpet. Christina Aguilera fell during her performance and Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber arrived separately! Now, we've got the complete winners list for your viewing pleasure! Check out all of them after the jump! Album of the Year: The Suburbs, Arcade Fire Record of the Year: "Need You Now," Lady Antebellum Rap [...]

"Folk music is a major part of my life, and I'm hooked. I love everything that keeps happening, and I'd love to keep other people informed and interested as much as I can." That antiphon is from Fred Knittel, a 22-year-old undergrad in Drexel University's music industry program. The Asbury Park native is true to his words - for the last three years, he's hosted the alt-folk radio program, Folkadelphia, which was first home to Drexel's WKDU station, and, since June, finds a place every Tuesday evening on Y-Rock on XPN. He also owns [...]

For anyone with even a passing interest in the high quality strains of techno emitting from the Netherlands, the name Aroy Dee will no doubt already feature on your radar. As Aroy Dee and M>O>S, Steven Brunsmann has been releasing deeply emotive techno and house music since the early days of 2001, kicking off with one of the first releases on Rush Hour Recordings. In an age of digitalized studios and sound-alike productions, Brunsmann's vintage sound is refreshingly timeless. His own M>O>S imprint plays home to his own productions and features those of like minds Legowelt, Morphosis, Ross 154 and [...]
