Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton-collectively known as Electric Guest -have confirmed an April 24 release date for their Danger Mouse-produced Downtown Records debut album, Mondo. The record's release is preceded by utterly infectious first single "This Head I Hold," available now as a free stream http://soundcloud.com/electric guest/this-head-i-hold and was released digitally on January 24. (Check out the art on the right) Meanwhile the thoroughly unsettling video for album cut "American Daydream," directed by Jorma Taccone (The Lonely Island, Saturday Night Live), ...

If Justin Bieber's SNL cameos over the last two years have left you wanting more, you're in luck! Lorne Michaels recently announced that the NRJ Music Awards winner will host — and be his own musical guest — this season. To date, we've only seen Biebs portray himself in a revival of Dana Carvey's "Church Lady" sketch , and as a very slight variation of himself as Tina Fey's inappropriately alluring student . We wonder if the Canadian crooner will get back at Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon for their [...]

Those of you who have followed this blog since its inception (and let's face it that's no one) know that a few months ago it transitioned from a blogger cookie cutter dirt palace to a fat cow wind powered gravel track. I have my dear friend Michelle to thank for all of that. The other night I finally had a chance to thank her with what I do best, cook. I went with a completely vegan, sans dessert, meal of carrot soup, salad, bread and tropical collards. These are a remix of a recipe that Simon Spire sent my [...]

L.A. duo Electric Guest taps into electronic-tinged soul grooves and the product was interesting enough to get Danger Mouse involved; he produced their debut LP Mondo (as well as Norah Jones's new one . Dude is busy). In the buildup to that release, the band put out the clip for "American Daydream," a video glimpses at a party gone wrong where a wannabe lover creeps around the edges. Then frontman Asa Taccone, who has contributed to the songwriting process of his brother Jorma's Lonely Island gang for viral hits like "Dick In A Box," makes a bit [...]

Truthfully, I've been waiting for the rap, Harry Potter crossover for a long time. And by crossover, I mean rap referencing Harry Potter in a substantial way, not some dumb CollegeHumor parody or a Lonely Island video. It was a matter of time, really. Harry Potter is practically as big as Star Wars and I'm sure every rapper under 25 can name all seven horcruxes. Don't believe me? Both ASAP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar told Dee Vazquez that the last book they read was a Harry Potter book. ASAP picked Goblet of Fire and [...]

Members of the entertainment industry from all corners are banding together to make a stand against the (thankfully) weakening SOPA bill. Among these are Trent Reznor , MGMT , Nada Surf , The Lonely Island , OK Go , and more. These artists have all collaborated to try and communicate to Washington the fear of legitimate websites being shut down due to "copyright infringement" that isn't hurting anyone (like blogs, repostings, etc.). Above all, these artists recognize the usefulness and opportunity found in these websites and don't want to see them disappear overnight due to [...]

Even after yesterday's high-profile protests from Wikipedia, Google, Facebook, and Tumblr, and even after many of the two bills' initial architects are withdrawing support, debate still rages over SOPA and PIPA, the two invasive internet-piracy bills currently facing Congress. And now a number of popular artists have signed an open letter to Congress, which comes out strongly against both bills. Trent Reznor, MGMT, the Lonely Island, Aziz Ansari, Amanda Palmer, OK Go, Nada Surf's Daniel Lorca, and Public Enemy producer Hank Shocklee are among those who have signed the letter. In its text, the letter acknowledges the harmfulness [...]
The Internet has found itself a new ally in its ongoing fight against SOPA and PIPA. As Billboard reports, Trent Reznor, MGMT, The Lonely Island, Nada Surf's Daniel Lorca, and OK Go have all co-signed an open letter to Congress expressing their opposition to the legislation. The letter was also signed by comedian Aziz Ansari, fillmaker Lloyd Kaufman, MythBusters ' Adam Savage, and other members of the entertainment industry. "We fear that the broad new enforcement powers provided under SOPA and PIPA could be easily abused against legitimate services [...]

Do you remember waking up to see Onsmash taken down by government? I do, and vividly. I was shocked, I was beyond upset, and I was also a little worried. I mean, we post a lot of music, a lot of videos, and a lot of content. We try to make sure that most of what we post comes with explicit permission from artists and labels. We don't leak any music given to us without permission, and we don't seek out music or albums to give away for free, just for hits or for the fuck of it. The thought [...]
Adding their voices to a rising anti-SOPA tide, a group of prominent musicians, actors, and authors including Trent Reznor, OK Go, MGT, Zoe Keating and Neil Gaiman have signed an open letter to the US Congress. An open letter to Washington from Artists and Creators We, the undersigned, are musicians, actors, directors, authors, and producers. We make our livelihoods with the artistic works we create. We are also Internet users. We are writing to [...]

If you tried to visit a number of websites today and were unable to view their content, don't be alarmed: it's due to the protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) bills, which were created to stop online piracy and protect copyright owners, but could allow the government to censor practically anything on the Internet. You'd think musicians would be all for protecting their music from piracy, but artists, such as B.o.B, Kreashawyn, OK Go and more, have made it clear that this bill, if passed, will do more harm than good. [...]
Filed under: News Getty (2) The battle over the SOPA and PIPA bills -- the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act -- currently making their way through the U.S. Congress has hit a crescendo. Wikipedia, Reddit and other sites shut themselves down on Jan. 18 to protest the legislation which enables the U.S. government to block public access to any site accused of copyright infringement without their day in court. Several [...]

Photo by Debi Del Grande It's been nine months since Santigold unleashed her Karen O-aided single "Go" . Since then, we've haven't heard much more about the Philadelphia native's upcoming sophomore album, though her name has shown up on tracklists for The Lonely Island , Spank Rock , and Amadou & Miram , as well as on Coachella's 2012 bill . Last week, however, Santigold revealed to V magazine that her new album will be called Master of My Make-Believe and will [...]
Now, we've watched a truckload of videos with guys in coloured/spiked hair and women in barely any clothing by the beach. And, we've had our fair share of homegrown DJs , rappers and hip-hop artists who've become YouTube phenomena . 'Dope Shope' by Honey Singh (of 'The Choot Song' fame) is no exception. With an uncanny similarity to The Lonely Island's 'I'm On A Boat' , the song makes for fairly entertaining post-3-pm-Saturday-afternoon-G od-why-am-I-at-work viewing . Fancy cruise ship, unbuttoned shirts, multi-coloured bikins, smoke, champagne and sunscreen in ample amounts, 'Dope Shope' essentially talks about living the good [...]

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]
