In a profile of the chamber sextet yMusic that was published in today's New York Times , it's revealed that the group participated in a recording session with Trey Anastasio . Trey's new solo album, expected this fall, also contains contributions from members of the National and Mates of State as well as Anastasio's solo band. Noted producer Peter Katis is co-producing the album with Big Red, which was recorded at Katis's Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Conn.

One of indie rock's favorite boy-girl duos, Mates of State , are tour warriors. They hit the road regularly to support their albums (in this latest case, the album is called Mountaintops ). It looks like the latest batch of shows isn't very long, but the New York City comes out pretty good on the schedule. The band first play the City on February 17 at Le Poisson Rouge. They cross the river into New Jersey the next night to play Maxwell's. The full list of dates is below. Mates of [...]

Mixtape: Twenty Years of Noise Pop (Podcast #269) In February, the Noise Pop Music Festival turns twenty by gathering over one hundred local and touring bands from across the indie spectrum for a week of exciting concerts all over the City. Two decades of championing independent music is an accomplishment worth celebrating, and this mixtape collects twenty bands that have performed at Noise Pop events in years past. As you'll hear, a whole bunch of big names graced Noise Pop bills before achieving fame, as past festivals [...]

I live in a house with three other room mates. Big back yard, swimming pool, porch, stairs and the whole shit. Larry fries fish and chicken on the weekends, Jackie keeps a fresh roll of toilet paper in the baffroom, and I often host my four year old son or an escort from backpage.com. Needless to say, a happy black home. Four months ago we welcomed Scott to the family. 45 years old, works in insulation installation, clean, respectful bruva. He took the room next to mine. Shit was cool from the jump. Scott often kept [...]
From Johnny Cash and June Carter to Mates of State, pop music would be a duller place without the romantic tug-of-war between genders. Blasting the dull, grey layer from the boy/girl concept is Big Deal , comprised of Joshua Tree, CA's Kacey Underwood and London's Alice Costelloe. The friends-one-might-mistake-for- lovers make heartache and young lust universal experiences. The cornerstone of Big Deal's sound is the uber-minimalist one-two punch of Underwood's alt-leaning electric guitar and Costelloe's lonesome acoustic strum. Though composed of diametrically opposing musical notions, the overall aesthetic is as smitten and adorable as it is dark and [...]

Remember a while back when Mates of State were going to play at the Canal Club, but had to cancel the gig because they got the chance to perform on David Letterman? And remember when I threw a little tantrum when they canceled ? Well, my little outburst made its way through the internets and managed to get the attention of Mates of State's promoters, who assured me that they would return to Richmond. Mates of State themselves even tweeted at me (I know, right??) and promised to come back, although [...]

The Tree Ring @ San Diego Women's Club by Natalie Kardos . The Tree Ring top my list of top song obsessions for 2011. Frontman Joel P West also appears on the list. Song obsessions are those songs that your brain picks for you, those ear worms that get stuck in your head and have you singing them to yourself or going back to hit repeat on your ipod. I like the idea of reporting what my brain got stuck on each year. Here's the list of the songs that were stuck in [...]

Here's Altrok 90.5 HD2's rundown for 2011 (technically 12/15/2010 - 12/15-2011) with each band represented by their highest charting track during that period, as determined by airplay on the station. We couldn't afford Price Waterhouse for the tabulations, but the software we used seems pretty solid. (Update: Okay, so we screwed up on The Drums. We like The Drums.) 90.5 - Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle 90 - Digitalism - 2 Hearts 89 - Blood Orange - Forget It 88 - Foals - Spanish Sahara 87 - Radiohead - Lotus Flower 86 [...]

Top Ten Movie Soundtracks of 2011 Words : Drake Lelane Ok... I have to come clean. I did not see as many of these films as in the past five years of making this annual list. Since having kids, it's hard to get to the theater to see a film that isn't animated, but I make up for it by being choosy with I do see and then catching up by feasting upon award season screener DVDs in December. So even though I got to see what [...]

Frank Yang Most bands that name themselves for prehistoric entities - your Mastadons, your Dinosaur Jrs - seem to do so at least a little for the heavy and/or primal connotations that come with it. Not so much for Brooklyn's Caveman , who seem to have chosen the name ironically as there's nothing raw or neolithic about their smooth and polished debut album Coco Beware . Rather than club you about the head with a bone, Caveman makes an impression with shimmering guitars, floaty synths and tight harmonies delivering [...]
