Sometimes Seattle gets it wrong. No doubt a lot of great music comes out of this town and the surrounding area, and bands like Fleet Foxes, Nirvana, The Head and the Heart, Band of Horses, Modest Mouse (okay, Issaquah actually) and so many before them have gone on to national acclaim. But when you've got to dig through the import bin to find the latest album by The Walkabouts , well, something's wrong! The veteran band, formed by songwriting duo Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson, has been cranking out stellar albums for nearly 30 years and yet they still [...]
In the late '90s, Modest Mouse's drummer Jeremiah Green was part of a side project called Red Stars Theory that ... Read the full article at http://www.prefixmag.com/media /lotus-plaza/come-back/61531/
Pinche aquí para ver el vídeo We're thrilled that The Shins chose recordstoreday.com to premiere their brand new song, "SEPTEMBER", the B-side of the "Simple Song" 7" single that will be in stores next week, and a little appetizer for their March 20 full length Port of Morrow. It's been a while since James Mercer has released music as The Shins, and we're happy to be part of the lead-up to the release of the new album in March. The "Simple Song" 7" (which has the song we're premiering, "September", [...]
Portlandia is a show by, for, and about indie rock types, so it's no surprise that indie big dogs show up in sketches every so often. This past weekend's episode featured two. St. Vincent's Annie Clark, who first collaborated with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein back when they were the online sketch duo ThunderAnt, played a model who showed off a proposed police-uniform redesign. Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, meanwhile, played someone attempting to donate records to the local elementary school. Watch both of their sketches below. Also, we asked Fred Armisen to name his [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, there was always this weird anti-Ohio attitude that cut deeply. Although without Ohio, none of us in Beaver County, living on the border, would be drinking any beer in high school. So thanks, East Palestine, for your beat-up 7-Elevens. It's a [...]

Besides the usual nonsensical tomfoolery of Portlandia , a recent episode starring St. Vincent's Annie Clark and Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock brought up incredibly important questions for any person trying to raise a "musically cultured" child (or whatever that means). Are Mike + The Mechanics the bane of rock history? Is Whitney's Houston our generation's Dante? Is Harry Nilsson the perfect soundtrack to an intense session of Lincoln Logs? Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein would say yes to all of the above, but are they the authorities in musicianship that we should obey? Sure, Brownstein used to be in [...]

Sasquatch! , held every year in the Pacific Northwest, isn't regarded as one of the bigger music festivals in the United States, but is usually regarded as one of the best. Last year, festival organizers enlisted the talents of the Foo Fighters , Wilco , Death Cab for Cutie , Modest Mouse , The Flaming Lips , and lot more over the course of four (yes, four) days. While that may be fairly impressive for what isn't regarded as one of the year's bigger events, this year's does boast a fairly heavy - [...]

Penrose are off to a good start in 2012 with the release of a live performance album. The 7-song EP Live From Bleecker Street offers up a suitable preview of the upcoming studio album that the Brothers Murphy are recording with Bill Moriarty, and it also features covers of Modest Mouse's "Bukowski" and the Tallest Man on Earth's "Love is All." The band has something special lined up for their performance at World Café Live tonight because they'll be debuting a new unplugged set that will be giving their charged up rock tunes a whole new interpretation. [...]

Last month , XPN22s John Vettese noted that Penrose had followed up an active first half of 2011 with a self-imposed hibernation in the fall, during which the Philly-based band concentrated on writing songs for its next album. Last week, Penrose performed some of the new songs set to appear on the upcoming album—which the band plans to record this summer with producer Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man)—during a show in New York City; the entire live performance was recorded, and the tracks were made available via Bandcamp earlier today. From the band's [...]

Words by Jim My inbox gets annihilated by emails on a daily basis. I almost feel bad for it. PR people from around the globe send us the most random stuff. Seriously, I'm not saying that we are super important and we have PR agents banging our door down, because that's definitely not the case. It's just the power of Google and Twitter search, I guess. If we feature a band from the UK, you can bet that two days later we'll have emails about the newest dub step grunge trip hop artist from [...]
The DALE EARNHARDT JR. JR. made their Conan O'Brien debut last PM via a performance of 'Simple Girl' . If you ain't heard of this Michigan duo yet, brace yourself cause next month they'll do a few live show in nodnoL town and I'll be interviewing them. And if you be loving the MODEST MOUSE then you should spend your next three minutes watching the Michigan post-rock-folking duo ..
You didn't hear this from us, but an error recently on the Sasquatch website inadvertantly revealed a partial list of performers for this year's version of the annual festival scheduled to take place May 25-28 at the Gorge. These are all unconfirmed acts, in other words, but we only have to wait a couple of days to see the entire lineup anyway-- the announcement party happens this Thursday at Seattle's Neptune Theater and features Junip, Nada Surf's Matthew Caws, and The Physics. Nevertheless, it's fun to start to think about what kind of dream bill [...]

O'Brother Exclusive Interview: O'Brother January 29, 2012 by Chuck Norton The moral of the fable about the tortoise and the hare is that those lacking focus and determination have the opportunity to exceed the success of those whose effort is compromised by a tendency to dillydally. In the context of music, this is often the case. When the band O'Brother formed in 2006 in Atlanta it would have been difficult to predict that, six years later, the band would find [...]

Five years ago today, Australia Day, I met my beautiful wife. To cut a long story short we had met through my blog. She commented on Modest Mouse and Mountain Goats gigs that we had both been to. Soon we were Last Fming and emailing. Then I had tickets to a great gig. Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird and Bill Callahan on January 26, 2007. We met. We connected. We became gig buddies. We became friends. We became boy and girl friends. We bought a house together. We got married. So it's now been 5 and a half years [...]

Sometimes I wonder if all musicians have truly lost their minds and I worry that dub-step and "wobble-bass" will overtake the music world like a modern-day Bubonic plague. In the midst of these thoughts, I occasionally hear a record that pulls me back into reality and reminds me that not every musician has gone insane and that people are still perfectly capable of making rockin' music. All Day, Alright , the newest release from Bunny's A Swine , is one such record. Bunny's A Swine manages to capture a 90's indie rock vibe a la Modest [...]

We can't get enough of this tune. Even with it being sampled into a Hip Hop beat, we enjoyed the classic guitar riff. We see here that Simplify Records has provided a SICK remix by K Theory of the classic Modest Mouse hit "Float On". To download this tune, CLICK HERE! We also put up some of K-Theory's other free tunes too! Enjoy! Free Downloads! by K Theory

Cleveland's Beachland Ballroom & Tavern invites all of us to hop on and ride the wave of indie pop goodness with Welsh rockers Los Campesinos! It must be nice living in Cardiff. Home to the world's oldest record shop (Spillers Records opened in 1894. Cardiff wasn't even an official city until 1905!) and one of the best rock scenes out there (Lostprophets, Bullet For My Valentine, Funeral For A Friend, Kids in Glass Houses, and The Automatic to name a few), the City of Arcades has recently bequeathed upon us one more gem: [...]
