Millions of people celebrate Valentines Day with a special gift or gesture for our loved ones, however occasionally we find it difficult to think of Valentines gift ideas. The beginnings of this special day of affection are uncertain. One legend says St Valentine had been a Roman clergyman, famous for marrying youngsters contrary to the wishes of the emperor, who wanted all adolescent men to stay single and become soldiers. Another tale portrays St Valentine as being a prisoner in the Fifteenth century who fell deeply in love with his jailors female child and sent her the very first [...]

We began to delve into the technical side of DJing with our DJing Made Easy feature, and we plan to expand our coverage of the production side of this business. In that technical spirit, we attended the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Show in Anaheim, CA earlier this month, which crams over 1,441 exhibitors into the West coast's largest convention center. While there was no shortage of new kit on display from companies like Numark, Pioneer, Avid, and Novation, one of the biggest trends from the show was the multitude of DJ solutions for the iPad. Think this device is just for media [...]

The workshops will be held at the Experimental Theatre [...]
Ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes behind the broadsheet newspaper? Just yesterday it was revealed that the Guardian , incidentally a national publication whose music department has recognised our hard work here at TGTF, will be allowing the public behind their previously closed doors to find out. This 24-25 March at their offices in King's Cross, London, the Guardian will be holding their first Open Weekend , giving people the opportunity to participate in lectures and debates by their editors, writers [...]

It's been a compelling week of television on CBS's Late Show . On Tuesday, K-Pop's Girls' Generation made their American TV debut to the delight of all of us, and especially guest Bill Murray. Wednesday marked David Letterman's 30th year in late night, over which Howard Stern got all nostalgic, telling the host, "Back then, the fact that you asked me to be on a national television show was mind-blowing." And Thursday saw Lana Del Rey - perhaps you've heard of her - improve upon her much critiqued SNL bow [...]

As a Canadian, I often find it difficult to dissociate myself from my nation's past time: hockey (although, contrary to popular belief, it is not Canada's national sport). So this week I am bringing to you a little treasure that hockey brought to my attention. This season of the HBO show 24/7: The Road to the NHL Winter Classic followed the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers in the weeks leading up to the Winter Classic – an outdoor hockey match shortly after New Years. In the first episode, the Flyers returning to their dressing room after [...]

Three minutes and eight seconds into the video for Lana Del Rey's indie-hip single "Video Games," sandwiched between a shot of a pool and one of a wall, there are a few frames of Del Rey glancing away from, and then back into, the camera's lens. It's clearly meant to look casual in the way that videos often make use of an "I just happened to turn the camera on" conceit – i.e., we're meant to understand that we're watching performance or moment, per se. But the glance is just a hair too practiced, too calculated: her timing [...]

Young the Giant - "Strings" Three minutes on stage may have made the difference between emerging success and national attention, or a career as another relatively unknown alt-rock band for the members of Irvine's Young the Giant . Or, as guitarist Jacob Tilley recalls, it could have meant the end of the band itself, had Young the Giant not wowed national television viewers at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with an electric performance of "My Body." "We were kind of getting to the point where [...]
On the heels of Jack White's new album announcement as well as the unveiling of Blunderbuss 's first single " Love Interruption ," we thought it was time to revisit the hits - not the literal ones , unfortunately - of White's wide-reaching, strange and prolific career so far. So, here's 13 of Jack White's most memorable collaborations. Sorry Bobby D . For once, you didn't make the cut. 13. Insane Clown Posse and JEFF The Brotherhood w/ Jack White Definitely one of the higher-ranking moments in Jack White's "WTF?" register, White [...]

Sometimes a song is so good you just want to cast its essence in bronze and hang it in the National Gallery where families of Taiwanese tourists can take illegal flash photos of it and fly them around the globe. Sometimes a remix does this for you, which is nice, because where the hell do you get tin anymore? Enter All Things Gold 003 alumnus Starsmith , whose reworking of St. Lucia's "We Got It Wrong" from Neon Gold Records elevates and pays tribute to the original with a mastery unseen since Donatello transformed raw molten metals [...]
Brooklyn-based band Milagres don't have a groundbreaking sound but they've previously proven themselves adept in building indie-emotional-pop walkabouts in the same vein as The National or The Antlers on their first album Seven Summits in 2008. The group's second album Glowing Mouth attempts to immerse the band further into tension-packed melancholia and often end up reminiscent of Arcade Fire's obsessions ('Here to Stay', 'Gentle Beast', 'Fright of Thee'). Stadium-sized synthesizers and over-the-top drum sounds sometimes aren't enough and the lazy hopping in night-wonders of 'Lost In The Dark', the throbbing [...]

On the eve of Black History Month, the Kennedy Center announced a partnership with singer-songwriter John Legend on a campaign called What's Going On… NOW , a national arts and digital media initiative. It is designed to draw and engage youth while contemporaneously commemorating the 40th anniversary of Marvin Gaye's groundbreaking album What's Going On . The framework of What's Going On... NOW operates similar to YouTube. It allows its users to share their stories through sound, images, music and video. To whet users' inspiration, they are given exposition on selected [...]
Back in May we got all excitebike about the new band formed by Sacha Dunable (Intronaut/Graviton/MetalSucks columnist), Charles Elliott (Abysmal Dawn), Derek Rydquist (ex-The Faceless), and Derek Donley (National Sunday Law/Graviton), called Bewilderbiest. Then in September they announced they'd changed their name to Bereft and released their first song, causing our helpless minds to swell with heated anticipation. Now Bereft have announced [...]
