In this edition: Discover The Last Names and Young Fathers, consider the music blog Indie Ambassador, and this week's videos! Discover: The Last Names The Last Names are probably familiar to you. As 2/5 of Bishop Allen , Justin Rice and Darbie Nowatka enjoy music that builds off the classic sounds of early 60s pop radio, making catchy pop tunes with upbeat compositions. It appears the duo are on break from Bishop Allen, moving from their hip [...]

Righteous Brother goes solo in 1968 and 1969 Following his 1968 break with fellow Righteous Brother Bobby Hatfield, Bill Medley kicked off a solo career with this pair of releases for MGM. Both albums grazed the bottom of the Billboard 200, and three singles ("I Can't Make it Alone" and "Brown Eyed Woman" from the first album, "Peace Brother Peace" from the second) charted short of the Top 40. It would be Medley's last solo chart action for more than a decade, as he'd reteam with Hatfield in 1974 and forgo solo releases for [...]

"You moved in slow degrees/A sudden memory/You're a Leonard Cohen song" - Better Than Ezra, "Under You" "But I was caught, like a fleeting thought / Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind" - Mercury Rev, "A Drop In Time" "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld / So I can sigh eternally" - Nirvana, "Pennyroyal Tea" It's almost unbelievable now to think that we almost never heard Leonard Cohen , the singer. A well-regarded poet from the late [...]

Tonight American Idol hits Houston, TX for the next round of auditions. Everything is bigger in Texas so lets hope it's better! Out of all the auditions in Aspen last night only 31 competitors were given a golden ticket to Hollywood. If you missed last night's episode or any of the earlier auditions you can see our recaps here! Last night's funniest audition was the last one of the evening with Magic Cylops . When he came in the audition room he told the judges he was a [...]

American Idol judge Steven Tyler's performance of the National Anthem on Sunday may have been an eyebrow-raiser, but who knew that just a few days later he'd have the vocal (and visual) atrocities of Magic Cylcops at the Aspen auditions to compete with? And then there was goofball Angie Zeiderman, who dazzled with her show tunes, piercings, purple hair and downright fearlessness. The offbeat singers were certainly far more entertaining than the hopefuls the judges put through to Hollywood. (And, for the record, Zeiderman did make it through — which we're thrilled about!) [...]

Neil Diamond - Lady Oh Off of 1976's Robbie Robertson-produced Beautiful Noise . This with Robbie Robertson on guitar, Bob James with the string and horn arrangements.
Oh my god. I love this man. He probably shouldn't be driving. [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Yeah. He's getting pretty old. [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Happy 71st bdgay to the NEIL DIAMOND . The American he-singer who became the oldest artist to have a US number one, in 2008, was born this way January 24 1941.

American black metal has experienced exponential growth over the last few years, but in my opinion, the scene reached an apotheosis of sorts in March 2009, with the release of Cobalt's Gin (Profound Lore), an album that truly, viscerally expanded the possibilities of black metal, both musically and thematically. Much of the press dedicated to that album focused on the band's vocalist, Phil McSorley, in no small part due to McSorley's day job: as an officer in the U.S. Army who had done numerous tours in Iraq. But anyone who actually listened to Cobalt's dizzying, assaultive, expansive, groundbreaking [...]

If I learned anything from Ted Kaczynski it is that people love manifestos. This just served to reinforce it. People also love extremes. So last time it was the meat eating, Swedish "shoegaze electronic" innovators Fort Fairfield who "invited" you to the table in their Lonneberga cabin. This time it is Simon Spire , a vegan macrobiotic foodie who writes catchy alternative rock music while discovering the best of New York's vegan, organic and raw food scene. Spire is kicking of 2012 with his first US EP release (on January 31st). No [...]

In hopes that 2012 will be a fruitful one for all of us, I am dedicating this week's Mix Tape to the delicious and treasures that fall from the trees. The mix opens with what would have been a solid 1-2 punch for the recently somewhat half-assed Phish New Year's run with the Zappa classic Peaches en Regalia and Phish's The Mango Song from the Hampton Comes Alive set. Ween's interesting combination of Bananas and Blow comes next followed by two songs I dig [...]
A cheap way to get Diamond's biggest hits, spanning his entire career.

Within five minutes of boarding the MSC Poesia at Florida's Port Everglades for Jam Cruise 10, I found myself sharing an elevator with John Oates and Bill Kreutzmann . The beauty of Jam Cruise is that both artists and cruisers share the same space and as we embarked on the tenth Jam Cruise the organizers have figured out which acts best embrace this "lack of a wall" between fan and artist and bring those people back each year. Yes, just five minutes in I was experiencing a magic moment with two of my musical heroes, who couldn't [...]
There was so much really great music that I heard this year, to the point that putting together these lists was quite difficult and time-consuming. But even so, there are still a lot more albums out there that were recommended to me by others that I simply never got the chance to hear, as well as some that I felt needed more listens for me to fully absorb them, so they sadly won't be showing up on here (Danny Brown, Julianna Barwick, The Weeknd, Fucked Up, PJ Harvey, Main Attrakionz, Tune-yards, Yuck…I could go on and on). I'll [...]

REPOST from 2008 (with slight updating): - I remember when the Apollo 8 astronauts went into space, right before Christmas in 1968. That was a rough year - Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy were shot, Vietnam was a bloody stain on the other side of the world. Violence boiled over into the streets. As Christmas week opened, three men in a little metal capsule hurtled through space toward the moon. The astronauts of Apollo 8 were the first humans to reach the orbit of another planetary body. As they streaked across the dark side of the [...]

For our first ever Festive Feature on Mad Mackerel, we asked twelve of our favourite bands and artists of 2011 to answer twelve questions and we will publish them over the next twelve days taking us up to Christmas Eve. Every so often a song comes out of nowhere and hits you right between the ears. It is those moments that make having a blog a delight - the chance to hear something new, exciting and share it with lots of (hopefully likeminded) folk. And so [...]
