Beatport describes Passarella Death Squad's first album, Republic of Desire (released in 2010) as "electronica." It is such an anemic word, especially for the music it is meant to encompass. Republic of Desire defies genre, blending elements of shoegaze and minimal-electronic. Vice magazine called it the soundtrack "for those S&M soirees you're always thinking of hosting," and everyone and their dog seems to love comparing vocalist Emilie Albisser to a dark Marlene Dietrich (and rightly so). Welcome to another Monday Threesome! Each of the bands this week falls within the realm of electro/snyth pop, focusing on keyboards, falsettos and rhythms. They play a dance hybrid of indie rock and electronic music, but within that somewhat narrow subgenre, each is able to bring something unique to their sound and leave their mark. One is a veteran, and the others are some new bands we are very excited about. Sleepyhead - Passion Pit // Buy Known for their very passionate falsetto vocals, [...]
Mason Maggio , front man of The Republic of Wolves did a fantastic cover of one of my all-time favorite MO tracks. Check him out giving his spin on the Mean Everything To Nothing b-side which appeared on the Fourteen Years of Excellence EP

Harley Weir No question, the first thing that needs to be addressed is their name. Even in an era with no shortage of terrible band names, Trailer Trash Tracys is an exceptionally terrible band name; the London quartet would probably be the first to admit it. But if there's an upside to it, it's that it offers no clues to what their debut album Ester might hold, so you've no choice to experience it with an open mind, if perhaps also lowered expectations. Not that pressing [...]

Some dismissed Mayer Hawthorne's debut, A Strange Arrangement as overly contrived. But the record was truly one of the great growers of 2009, helped in no small measure by Stones Throw Records and Hawthorne's vintage connoisseur taste. Not to mention, Hawthorne's rare knack for pleasantly deluding people into believing that they could do what he does with the right snappy retro suit. Soon, a bunch of major labels were trying to break down Hawthorne's door and sign him to lucrative deals. [...]
My moms sent me this email: I hate Apple and I hate the deity halo people paint around Steve Jobs, who refused to open code. All the millions in profits show capitalism at its worst and America hardly gains, we only know how to drool, line up for hours and empty our pockets. It really kills me because the iPad is beautiful, the iPhones are beautiful, Macs were always beautiful, but there is a terrible hidden price. But maybe it [...]

Remember when Merge Records was synonymous with genre-defining indie rock and had a whole roster of bands whose albums you couldn't wait to get your hands on? Well, guess what? They still are, and do! The venerable Durham, North Carolina, label proves they're still up to their game with two releases this week in heavy rotation at KEXP. Bay Area veterans Imperial Teen return with their fifth album overall and their third on Merge, Feel the Sound , which, according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "continues to refine and expand upon their infectious blend of power-pop, [...]

New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band have just announced the first leg of the 2012 Wrecking Ball World Tour, which will take the group across the country over the course of six weeks between March 18 and May 2. As part of the announcement, Springsteen lists the members of the E Street Band and in a bit of a surprise there's no new sax player listed to fill the shoes of the late Clarence Clemons. The tour kicks off on March 18 in Atlanta and features [...]

Porcelain Raft - Strange Weekend Mauro Remiddi has led a complicated musical life. He has performed Klezmer Music for the Berlin Youth Circus, crossed the 38th Parallel to re-interpret the folk songs of North Korea, composed music for short films and Vaudeville revivals , and, today, he is set to release his solo debut under the name Porcelain Raft. The record, entitled Strange Weekend , is a triumph of so-called "dream pop," a record at once both intimate and expansive, both gentle and arresting. Mr. Remiddi recently re-located [...]
This week proves to have some very interesting releases. For starters, IRS Records returns. Now a division of EMI, the legendary label comes back with a new album from Foxy Shazam entitled The Church of Rock and Roll (pictured). There's also plenty else to be excited about. A new Nada Surf record is totally awesome news, and we can't complain about a heavy one from Lamb of God . Two compilations dedicated to two other great artists, Bob Dylan and Waylon Jennings , also come out. There's certain nothing to [...]

Guided by Voices — Let's Go Eat The Factory A rather busy end to 2011 and start to 2012 saw me miss what I thought would be a lot, but it turned out that I was just late to my first listen to the new Guided by Voices record. Wait, what? I shouldn't be surprised.* When I saw GBV at Matador at 21 — you know, that concert that was supposedly their only reunion show that turned into a full-fledged tour — they looked, well, happy. And really happy at that. None [...]
