Another Cup of Coffee with Super Fan Randi Lynn

Another Cup of Coffee with Super Fan Randi Lynn Another Cup Of Coffee is a monthly feature in which I talk to a different person from the Memphis music community. The idea is to, over time, see how all the pieces fit to make something really special. In 2011, I talked to artists past and present , producers , music business experts , sound guys , festival entrepreneurs , and everything in between. But I wanted to kick off 2012 with one of the most important members of any music community: the fan. If you've ever [...]

Albums of the Year: 2011 With Christmas out of the way, and the year almost over, it's time I finally get around to compiling my Top 20 albums of the year of 2011 (in fact, there are 21 entries). Each album is represented on the mix with a song, and each entry has a link to the artist's homepage or other outlet where the album can be ordered from. Because this list is intended not only to show off my impeccable taste, but also to showcase artists, all data files in the mix have been downscaled to 128kbps. This is not really a chart, but [...]

Just kidding...kind of. If you want the darker side check out yesterday's anti-christmas playlist . There's some secret bonus songs on the ZIP file not listed below too. A Very [...]

All i will say is that i think it's been a pretty good year for music, especially at a roots and small, indie label level and i personally hope this trend continues into 2012 and beyond. It's further proof that if you are making good music and bringing it to your live shows, word of mouth still [...]

Can – Tago Mago (40th Anniversary edition)

Can – Tago Mago (40th Anniversary edition) Looking for something or someone to blame for encouraging you to shell out some of your hard-earned for, say, Guru Guru's sludgy blues-rock? Well, as a genre landmark and well-established gateway drug to the wondrously weird world of Krautrock, as the experimental, more or less rock-based sounds cooked in Germany in the late 602s and 702s are affectionately known, Tago Mago 's amongst the most likely suspects. Recorded over a period of months in an ancient castle in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany in 1971, Can 's second album found the band in a [...]

Wednesday: Over the Rhine @ The Lincoln Theatre

Over the Rhine: "The Laugh Of Recognition" (Taft Theatre 12.18.2010)
Over the Rhine has come a long way since the days where they'd play intimate, candlelit shows at Stache's . These days, some 20+ years after OTR's core members Karin Bergquist (vocals, guitars) and Linford Detweiler (multi-instrumentalist) first put the band together (and 15 years since the duo married), Over the Rhine is more suited for large stages such as the one at Lincoln Theatre where they'll be performing on Wednesday night. Earlier this year, Over the Rhine released the Joe Henry [...]

Now made up of married couple Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, the Cincinnati-based group has released record after record of calm—if not a little sedated—coffee house rock. Now in its twenty-third year of existence, the group comes off riddled with self-reflection and the contemplative thoughts that apparently come from growing older. Over the Rhine's website comes complete with journal entries detailing members' reflection on older journal entries from way back when, trying to complete [...]

Choir of Young Believers- "Patricia's Thirst"

For the past few years, the 80s have been a carcass the indiesphere is desperately picking over like a group of starving buzzards. However, that doesn't mean these more nostalgic releases don't have their bright spots. So, here's a track from the forthcoming Choir of Young Believers album, Rhine Gold . It'll be out via Ghostly in March of 2012, and the first track to drop, "Patricia's Thirst," is a pretty fun and hooky combination of synth basslines and dreamy vocals. Enjoy!

In collaboration with fellow compatriots Ruralfaune , French record label Hands In The Dark has prepped its first vinyl release, a compilation named Travel Expop Series #1: France , that (as the title suggests) marks the first installment in a series of records that "will bring a handful of experimental pop artists together with a label that we admire of the same nationality". France showcases a delicious gathering of some of our favorite psychedelic artists from across the Rhine: long-standing NFOP darlings Holy Strays and Cankun , along with the wonderful [...]

[Photos] Midpoint Music Festival – Cincinnati, 9.23 + 9.24.11

[Photos] Midpoint Music Festival – Cincinnati, 9.23 + 9.24.11 Cincinnati's Midpoint Music Festival is awesome. For 2011, the organization got their shit together and observed what works and what doesn't with multi-venue urban festivals like CMJ and SXSW, while also making the three-day festival a uniquely Queen City venture. As opposed to past years, Midpoint condensed their territory to strictly the Central Avenue and 12th corridor between downtown and Over The Rhine. No venue was more than a 10 minute walk from MPMF's epicenter - the Midpoint Midway, packed with visual artists, installations, delicious grub solutions, and a giant Connect Four game. This meant that non-venue spaces [...]

Infamous Love Songs: An Interview with Over the Rhine

Over the Rhine "The Laugh of Recognition"
Their latest album was funded by their fans, Lucinda Williams stopped by to sing on a track, and the group's new record label is named after their dog. Welcome to the wonderful world of Over the Rhine ... They've gotten thousands of letters, like one from a fan who'd listened to their music during cancer surgery. Their songwriter-multi-instrumentali st was almost a missionary. They've released a plethora of albums while retaining contact with their fans. And now they've made another superb record -- that was financed by said fans. Over the Rhine's (comprised of husband-and-wife team Linford Detweiler and [...]
