The Drunken Frenchman once told me that "if you're good with your barkeep, you're good." Earl was our barkeep and, with him, we couldn't have been better. And The Iguana, a local bar with a quasi-cantina vibe where he plied his trade, was a reliable place to find grist for my imagination From one night's worth of notes… Dave sits nearby, a sodden sort who perpetually attempts to engage me in conversation. He's not good with his barkeep, nursing his drink as though he intends to still be drinking it when [...]
This month marks the 10th anniversary of Fluxblog. I will be doing a few things to celebrate the occasion over the course of the year, but the main thing is that I will be putting together survey mixes for each year the site has existed. The mixes will be released on the first weekday of each month this year, culminating in revised/expanded versions of the 2010 and 2011 mixes and this year's survey at the start of December. 2002 was an interesting year, with a lot of major stuff bubbling up as the identity of the decade [...]

It's been a long time since we've seen anything new from Phantom Planet since the band went on hiatus back in 2008 after the release of "Raise the Dead". But last year they announced that they will be making their return in 2012. Phantom Planet have scheduled a Los Angeles show to take place on Wednesday, June 13th at the Troubadour along with local band HAIM . Tickets for this show are available to purchase online now through Ticketfly for $15.00 plus any additional service fees. These tickets are [...]

Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces a spectacular set of prints for the Planet of the Apes films. In May 2011, the Alamo Drafthouse hosted "Day of the Apes," an epic 8-hour marathon of all five Planet of the Apes films. The poster set, created to commemorate the event, is finally unveiled to the public with each film tackled by a different artist. The posters, created in partnership with Sideshow Collectibles and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, will be sold as a set on Thursday, January 26th for $230. This will [...]

Alfred the Great drops a bomb to rip up the nu-"California" stereotype established by Phantom Fucking Planet in 2002 and continued until whenever The OC croaked. How much would you rather hear this than that wrist-cutting-in-the-sunshine sop that soundtracked Adam Brody's amateur neuroses? (Let the pro's handle this, son.) Maybe I'm biased. Daedelus's original last name had a Weiss in it and he grew up a few miles from me. His California is close to my own. But this song is gentle, gauzy, unnerving and beautiful. You will like it too. It can [...]

Here are my picks for the week in Los Angeles show-going: Monday, Jan. 9 : Princeton's free residency kicks off at the Bootleg with TV Girl; chamber-folk act Seasons' free residency starts at the Echo. Highly recommend catching both bands this month. Tuesday, Jan. 10 : Punk upstarts FIDLAR play the Smell. Thursday, Jan. 12 : Radiohead acolytes Masxs play the Bootleg Bar; Robert Schwartzman (of Phantom Planet) and Princeton spin-off Sleeping Bags are at the Satellite, free; the reasonably charming garage-rockers of La Sera play the Echo. [...]

Go Go Bizkitt! 's new mix! It's always funny and happy. The thing about this dude is that his mixes a lot of genres, which is not boring. Some people plays Disco House, which is fine, but all night the same, no thanks. I think Tom Nelson's does this very well. He can balance between a lot of stuff and doesn't make you feel bored. Plus, he doesn't play the track until the end, he cuts a lot of parts of it. A lot of people plays 10 tracks in one hour... which is also... boring... This is an exclusive [...]

If you want to start off 2012 right, look no further than Go Go Bizkitt's latest Just For You Vol II mixtape, exclusive to Remix86.com . A follow-up to his insanely popular first installment of the Just For You mixtape series, the UK producer hits us with a skilled mix of some of 20112s top tracks and bangers, including some of his own edits, layered mashes, and electro-classics. With Go Go's unique mixing style, he manages to keep high energy throughout [...]

Great news for 2012. Phantom Planet have announced an end to their three hiatus. They are planning some shows for 2012 and are tossing around the idea of recording a new EP. What does this mean for the Alex Greenwald solo project/album? Who knows at this point, but regardless, this is great for PP fans. I hope the shows aren't limited to Cali, but I wouldn't be surprised considering Greenwald's recent lack of touring elsewhere. They've created a Twitter account for updates on the reunion and released some short footage of their first practice session since the [...]

And so we reach the end of the year and the obligatory retrospective edition. This year we've opted for a slightly different format, bringing together our three regular shows – RIPL, RIRS and Rhythm Incursions – into one bumper 3h edition that looks back at our favourite music from 2011. With each of us selecting one hour of music, this end of year show features primarily music and tracks which we've previously aired as well as a few additions culled from releases and/or artists we've supported this year. Enjoy and happy new year! [...]

Vimeo : A clip from an unreleased video for Blink1822s "Josie" surfaces. Expect the full version to follow. A.V. Club : 2011: the year of no important albums. Spin : The mag gives us their list of the top 10 music books this year. All Lavar Burton-approved of course. AbsolutePunk : Phantom Planet plans to reunite in 2012. Don't expect a newly-jobless Jason Schwartzmann to join, though. Rolling Stone : Comedian [...]

The Criterion Collection releases two Japanese new wave film classics by Seijun Suzuki this week, Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill . A 20th annioversary edition of The Rocketeer is available on Blu-ray. Monica & David , the story of two adults with Down syndrome who strive for independence, and The Black Power Mixtape , a Swedish film about America's Black Power Movement, are the documentaries that caught my attention. The [...]
