While perusing through my twitter feed today I noticed Saul Williams, who we've posted before, sent out a link of the video above. After giving the video one view I was immediately intrigued and set out to find more about Zebra Katz. I realize this is a bit experimental and may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those of you that are into it, I know after one view you will be an instant fan. The song is made up of a steady beat while Zebra Katz and Njena rhyme in a serious/threatening slo-mo vocal tone. The video [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris I commit to "pop" because it's more fun to say than "soda". Look, soda is flavorless ephemera that has to be mixed with gin to work as a beverage at all [...]
DJ Krust & Saul Williams - Coded Language Originally, rap was an Emcee reciting spoken word over a DJ's breakbeat. Here we have Saul Williams unleashing his poetry to DJ Krust's breaks. It's a nice jolt for your early monday morning. http://www.myspace.com/saulwil liams http://www.myspace.com/fullcyc lemusic
Don't have a good reason for it, but this song was stuck in my head last night as I went to bed. Always enjoy Saul, especially when he gives us hip hop that I don't need to be from the streets to connect to. So a few years ago, I penned an award list for my top movies of the year, named The Junkies , and then in typical Collin fashion, completely dropped off the radar for a year or so. But I told Marc I would try to drop my best in TV and movies before 2012 got here, so without further unnecessary preamble, here's my list of the best television series, miniseries, performances, cast ensembles and pubic haircuts of 2011: I'm not really ranking these so much as listing, [...]

Saul Williams has announced a North American spring tour, kicking off on February 17 in Brooklyn, and ending on March 24 in Montreal.
Saul Williams isn't a particularly happy rapper. However, the distinction between his character as a rapper/poet and his character as a person is important, for in every interview I've ever seen him conduct he's appeared to be nothing short of charming. He seems to save all of his anger for his music, taking the issues [...]

fanfarlo.com When it was announced earlier this Summer that Canadian Musicfest / Canadian Music Week was moving from it's traditional slot in the second week of March - right before SXSW - to the fourth week of March - right after SXSW - I was confused and concerned. Confused because, well, I dislike change, and concerned because whereas doing back-to-back festivals is exhausting no matter which way you order it, I liked that I could get into game shape with CMW, go hard through SXSW and then collapse immediately afterwards and savour my annual post-Austin [...]
Like the mythical creature of Edward Lear's poem, Scroobius Pip is an artist who evades simple categorisations of genre. Rising to prominence in 2007 with the meteoric hit 'Thou Shalt Always Kill', Pip and his grime house cohort Dan le Sac went on to produce two stellar albums of spoken word/electronic crossovers to the delight of thousands worldwide. Pip returned to his roots this year with his second solo release Distraction Pieces ; an incisive fusion of beat poetry and visceral hardcore punk. Lazing in the green room of Cork's Cyprus Avenue, State caught up with Scroobius [...]
If you follow us on Facebook you have probably seen the videos I have put up of Saul Williams. He's a poet and a musician along with a handful of other things but regardless of what he's doing he always delivers stellar performances. The video above is another LABLOGOTHEQUE production where their team of cameras follow around musicians through unique locations in order to capture beautiful performances in interesting situations. Saul Williams asked the LABLOGOTHEQUE team to follow him through the Catacombs in Paris which lead to the amazing story below and the dope film above... The Translation [...]
Some listen to music to reinforce a mood, an idea of a time/place, to embody a mind-state, a lightness, to sharpen or dull an edge. I make music to jump off of that edge and explore. I've been exploring since birth, whether wandering through the woods as a child, through the streets of NY as [...]
