A couple years ago, Punknews interviewer David Siffert walked into a bar in the middle of nowhere in Brooklyn. He had gotten lost on the way, so he was late. On walking into the show room, he was assaulted by one of the most glorious screams he had ever heard. He looked and saw a very small person, in a very red dress, holding a guitar, the head of a microphone literally inside of her mouth, belting out absolutely soul-crushing sounds. Meet Marissa Paternoster, guitarist and singer for Screaming Females and sole member of [...]

There could be a thousand identical, average looking females (kilotuplets?) in a room and if one of them stepped onto a stage with a microphone in her hand, she wins. Suddenly she is the most beautiful thing in the world and you need her. All the others fall into lists in the back of your head labeled "Average", "Backup plan", or "Who?" [...]

When one creates a Facebook status stating that one is going to see a band called Screaming Females , it invites such gem responses as "Yeah, that show's at my house tonight!" or "Ooh, count me in." Joke's on you, kids. The New Brunswick, New Jersey-based punk band features only one female, though she definitely screams and more importantly, won't take your shit. The Mercury Lounge slowly but surely reached capacity on Sunday night as the Females set up and the petite Marissa Paternoster checked out her gear, clad in a magenta 60s-style dress and sporting a [...]

...soihadto... performing at the Tipsy Teapot (photo: RJWphotos-Flickr) There are some good people working hard to establish a music scene in Greenville, and for selfish reasons, I want them to succeed. We are college town that needs to have a good indie/college music scene. We will never be Athens, but we can aspire to be! We have two venues that host a lot of the good gigs in town: The Tipsy Teapot (aka Tipsy) and the Spazz Haus . We also have a great bluegrass venue 10 miles away called the Fountain [...]

It has been a crazy year or so for Screaming Females , the Jersey-pride punks with the toughest pint-size singer this side of riot grrrl. And guess what? Screaming Females:
There's a raucous new album from Screaming Females due in September titled Castle Talk , which should build on all the hard work the group did while touring with the Dead Weather, Dinosaur Jr. and Arctic Monkeys during the promo stint for Power Move . Naturally, the hard working group has a slew of tour dates lined up around the release of the record (see below), and they've also shot this video for "I Don't Mind It." On first listen this sounds like a vintage Screaming Females track, if such a thing [...]

Screaming Females: Singles (Capsule Reviews)
Casual listeners might prefer the more pristine-version of the band, via last year's full-length, Power Move , but Singles is a tasty morsel of a feisty young talent. It's hard to say what qualifies as singles these days. Nevertheless, Singles is the title of the latest from Screaming Females. What comprises this release is more a collection of the band's 7-inches -- the old-school implications may scare away the youngsters who don't own record players -- and the album shows the band in its rarest form. Screaming Females hails from Brunswick, New Jersey and is equal [...]
