ULIGE NUMRE

ULIGE NUMRE Does the actual language that a song is sung in actually matter when assessing whether you like a piece of music or not? How would Bob Dylan seem if you didn't speak English and couldn't follow his beautifully twisted tales of the world? Would it miss a major part of what makes it so magic? What if Conor Oberst's stories were just noise to a non-English-speaking listener, or is that his melodies are still powerful enough? The issue of language occurred to us recently, when our attention was brought upon this Danish quartet who sing in their native [...]

Album Review // Message To Bears – Folding Leaves Artist : Message To Bears Title : Folding Leaves Label : Dead Pilot Records Release Date : January 16th BUY IT Written by Tom Johnson I've really struggled to write this review. Which is in no way meant as a negative comment against either the artist or their work, but is perhaps reflective of the overall [...]

FLUXBLOG 2002 SURVEY MIX

This month marks the 10th anniversary of Fluxblog. I will be doing a few things to celebrate the occasion over the course of the year, but the main thing is that I will be putting together survey mixes for each year the site has existed. The mixes will be released on the first weekday of each month this year, culminating in revised/expanded versions of the 2010 and 2011 mixes and this year's survey at the start of December. 2002 was an interesting year, with a lot of major stuff bubbling up as the identity of the decade [...]

10 Rock & Roll Interviews Gone Wrong

10 Rock & Roll Interviews Gone Wrong Interviewing rock & roll stars is not easy. They are a wild, usually egotistical bunch who often live outside the boundaries of acceptable human behavior as dictated by societal norms and generally accepted "common sense." For example, it may seem like common sense that once should not be nodding off on heroin, unable to speak, and wearing a shirt with a swastika on it during an on-camera interview. But for Sid Vicious, this seemed like an okay thing to do, and so he did it. Here's that, and nine other rock & roll interviews gone terribly wrong. [...]

Play It Forward: Breton

Play It Forward: Breton Breton are more then your average London band, they are a unique blend of artistic talent that is combined with the arts of music and film. There is a unique mystic about them and their associated BretonLABS name tag. They currently have a fantastic EP that you can pick up for free on their Facebook page titled Blanket Rule EP . They are also set up to release their debut album Other People's Problems on March 27th via FatCat Records. You can take a listen and check out the video for 'The Commission' [...]

MusicNOW 2012 Lineup Announcement Phillip Glass will be making his first MusicNOW appearance MusicNOW returns in 2012 for what promises to be another amazing weekend of music. This year, the festivities fall on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and we think there are plenty of reasons to be in attendance each night. Every year we build up to the final night, and this year, the final night shines once again as Sufjan Stevens highlights an amazing bill. Here is what each night looks like... March 28 [...]

Album Review: Casiokids – Aabenbaringen over aaskammen

Album Review: Casiokids – Aabenbaringen over aaskammen Yes, they had a song on the FIFA 10 soundtrack, and that's probably where you've heard of them. But I have more important news. Norwegian electronic-driven band Casiokids have a new album out this month, called 'Aabenbaringen over aaskammen'. I am in the fortunate position of having seen the band perform some of these tracks live when they were last in Washington and physically having the album in my grubby little hands for weeks now, long before any of you. And I can tell you this is one [...]

Message To Bears - Folding Leaves

Message To Bears - Folding Leaves The work of Jerome Alexander and his consortium of musicians always leaves me breathless. Everything is perfectly mastered, crisply recorded and checked to a tee to make sure the product that comes out the end is the best it could ever possibly be. Jerome's first feature length, 2009's Departures is still an album that sounds fresh and consistent. It's soft melodramatic eclipse of powerful, twinning melodies still leave me in a state of limbo, jittering somewhere in between the conscious and the dreamful world of perfection, making for the most surreal of listens. It's these situations that draw [...]

BOY – Skin

BOY – Skin Please tell me I don't have to talk you into this track. Every so often a song or artist drifts onto your radar and after 5 seconds you know this is a song that millions of people could love, it's simply a case of "I'll see you at the top" and just a matter of time before you do. Bon Iver is a great example, so are The National, The xx, Sigur Ros and The Naked And Famous. Slightly further down the ladder there are King Charles and [...]

Nights: The TVD Interview at My Mind's Eye Record Store

Nights: The TVD Interview at My Mind's Eye Record Store We've been thinking lately about the importance of sharing the city of Cleveland with our readers. Our city is the home of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and the world renowned Cleveland Orchestra's beautiful concert venue, Severance Hall. But what do you really know about the city of Cleveland past our embarrassing sports teams? Maybe you're a Clevelander and you need some insight on the cool Mom & Pop places in town. Maybe you're from out of town and not really familiar with our city. Either way, we thought, who better to introduce [...]

GFP Interview Series; 2012 Preview…002 // Breton

GFP Interview Series; 2012 Preview…002 // Breton Last week we caught up with The Twilight Sad for an extensive chat about their forthcoming LP, No One Can Ever Know . It was the first in a series of interviews that will look at some of the records we're most looking forward to over the first few months of 2012. Next up in our interview series are the Sad 's new label-mates Breton . The band have recently signed to FatCat Records ahead of the [...]

Kruk – End It

New Music: The Twoks

The Twoks - Let You Down
Welcome to the sound of The Twoks . Xani Kolac juggles playing the electric violin, singing and tapping synths barefoot while, Mark Leahy unleashes an arsenal of rhythms on percussion. The pair manage to squeeze gypsy rock, classic violin, jazz and tribal beats into their live performances. Using layers of string, drum and vocal samples as a foundation for their echoing sound, they work it up to a level of frenzy. The kaleidoscope of snares, kicks and bass beats that Mark delivers helps to solidify the mesmerszing melodies and ground Xani's airy vocals. They push the [...]

Our focus this week is the widely respected Sigur Ros Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll. [...]

Drake's Top Ten Movie Soundtracks of 2011

Jason Segel and Walter - "Man Or Muppet" from Disney's "The Muppets"
Top Ten Movie Soundtracks of 2011 Words : Drake Lelane Ok... I have to come clean. I did not see as many of these films as in the past five years of making this annual list. Since having kids, it's hard to get to the theater to see a film that isn't animated, but I make up for it by being choosy with I do see and then catching up by feasting upon award season screener DVDs in December. So even though I got to see what [...]

Most Anticipated Albums for 2012

Most Anticipated Albums for 2012 2011 was an amazing year for music. Some old favorites stayed the course or broke new trail, some new bands poked their heads into the scene and a few acts even kicked the door in. 2012 promises to be no different. Some of our favorite bands have either set release dates or tickled our senses with rumors of a potential release. There are some interesting questions that will be raised with this years releases though. Will this be fun.'s breakout year? Can James Mercer get old fans to forgive him for firing half his crew? Will Andrew Bird continue his [...]

Sigur Ros – Saeglopur (ENiGMA Remix)

<span style="color: #384E60; background-color:#84CCF2">Sigur</span> <span style="color: #384E60; background-color:#84CCF2">Ros</span> – Saeglopur (ENiGMA Remix) It's New Years Eve, I can't believe how fast this year went by, not sure if anyone else feels this way, but it seems like every year is going by quicker and quicker. That's why I am grabbing 2012 as hard as I can and flying FU*&^ING higher then I ever have and I suggest you do the same. For some reason I feel everything right now, my senses are better then they have been in years, and I think 2012 is going to bring some pretty amazing and great surprises upon us. This track seemed pretty damn [...]
