If any of my close friends or family heard me singing "The Kingdom is near / Christmas is here", I'd earn more than a few raised eyebrows. Christmas music doesn't ring from my speakers very often … and never as devotional folkpop. And never ever on repeat. What can I say? Jonas H. Petersens is impressive, and he'd have my support whether singing about Jesus or Captain Crunch. All he has to do is deliver each song with the same sincerity as "So Mournful the Elegy, So Comforting the Hymn" or with the same joyfulness as [...]

There are some songs that draw you in no matter where you might be. Whether listening to it alone in your bedroom, driving in your car, or standing in the middle of an audience hearing it at live show, you feel like you're alone and this song is just between you and the artist. Bear Attack 's "The Backpack Song" always does this for me. Contrary to their moniker, this LA-based band's sound is gentle and inviting. Sounding similar to artists like Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, and the Swell Season, Bear Attack's songs frequently invoke the impression of innermost [...]

Right before Christmas, we had the priviledge to premiere Sister Crayon's cover of the Bill Withers classic Ain't No Sunshine off their Disquiet EP. Today, they released a proper video for another cover off said EP, Sufjan Stevens' Futile Devices . The beautifully done split-screen video was directed by Ryan Lindow. Watch below. You can download the Disquiet EP for free here . MP3 : Sister Crayon - Futile Devices [...]

Half-handed Cloud — the solo project of John Ringhofer, who also plays trombone in Sufjan Stevens' Illinoisemakers — has to be one of the only bands out there right now that is capable of releasing a 5-song EP on a split 7-inch. Those five songs comprise the Blood Brothers EP and in total clock in at only 4.5 minutes, so that actually leaves enough time for the Nordic band I Was A King to supply the chipper, synthy pop number you can stream below, plus a Half-handed Cloud cover. (Half-handed Cloud returns the [...]
MusicNow is an annual Cincinnati-based music festival created by The National's Bryce Dessner, showcasing "contemporary music and artists that take risks and do not fit neatly into categories." This year's installment runs March 28-30th and features performances by Sufjan Stevens, Philip Glass, and Dessner himself, as You Ain't No Picasso points out. Day one will feature an organ concert by James McVinnie, who will be performing new pieces from Arcade Fire's Richard Parry and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, along with selections from Glass, Bach, Arvo Part, and Nico Muhly. The following day will feature a performance by Glass [...]
Cincinnati's MusicNOW festival s back this year with a lineup that's less indie all star and more forward-thinking composer. Get ticket info at MusicNOW Festival's site. Catch the full lineup (including a Noco Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner collab) after the break. Wed March 28: Free organ concert with James McVinnie at Christ Church Cathedral. [...]

Phillip Glass will be making his first MusicNOW appearance MusicNOW returns in 2012 for what promises to be another amazing weekend of music. This year, the festivities fall on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and we think there are plenty of reasons to be in attendance each night. Every year we build up to the final night, and this year, the final night shines once again as Sufjan Stevens highlights an amazing bill. Here is what each night looks like... March 28 [...]

Five years ago today, Australia Day, I met my beautiful wife. To cut a long story short we had met through my blog. She commented on Modest Mouse and Mountain Goats gigs that we had both been to. Soon we were Last Fming and emailing. Then I had tickets to a great gig. Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird and Bill Callahan on January 26, 2007. We met. We connected. We became gig buddies. We became friends. We became boy and girl friends. We bought a house together. We got married. So it's now been 5 and a half years [...]

Cloud Nothings Attack on Memory Carpark To hear Cloud Nothings' Dylan Baldi tell it, the title of the band's third album, Attack on Memory, is meant to be an attack on the memory of what people thought his band was." Of course, with a title that vague, this attack on memory could be attached to any manner of things we'd rather forget. For example, it could be an attack on your memory of all those shitty emo bands that claimed to be influenced by Fugazi, Sunny Day Real [...]

It's hard to believe that Annie Clark of St. Vincent was once just a backing member for Sufjan Stevens (not that that isn't an honor in itself). She's come such a long way since then and not only has she proven herself as a solo artist, worthy of every bit of attention she's gotten over the last few years, but she's also managed to melt the hearts of many with her vast personality, which bleeds through the power of her music, oh so well. One moment delicate and as sweet as a honeybee and the next, [...]
Trying to keep consistent with the posts that I put together last year, this is my list of favourite new artists that I found in 2011. One caveat worth mentioning, a lot of these artists may have existed pre-2011, but only came on to my radar last year. Although this post really should have been published at the end of last year, I'm glad I'm finally getting to it. Stream them in playlist form via Spotify , Rdio and Grooveshark . [...]

Brooklyn's Gabriel and the Hounds , brainchild of Takka Takka founder and vocalist Gabriel Levine, release their debut album next month. A Valentine's Day launch at New York's famed Mercury Lounge will be followed by a European tour. Whilst looking for a name for this project, Gabriel turned to one of his favourite albums for inspiration, Kate Bush's Hounds Of Love providing the necessary latter part of the name. The album was recorded in living rooms, garages, and in proper studios all over Brooklyn, including [...]

Impressively bearded Woodpigeon frontman Mark Andrew Hamilton designed his band's new EP to emulate the cassettes that he used to listen to while riding around in his parents' car. This breezy sense of looking back at Carole King and Fleetwood Mac is definitely done more in spirit than sonically, but the lithe, smooth indie pop that Hamilton and Co. come up with on the For Paolo EP could be the soundtrack to a new generation of night cruising. Originally formed in Scotland as Woodpigeon Divided By Antelope Equals Squirrel, the now Calgary, Alberta based [...]

Side projects are usually a means of branching out from the suffocating restrictions of being a small cog in the bigger wheel of the band. They're a means for an artist to express themselves, go their own way, expand themselves musically. With his Tunng offshoot Diagrams , Sam Genders dares to be different, on his debut solo album Black Light he plants his feet firmly inside his comfort zone preferring to photocopy the Tunng template and serve up a blend of English folk and gentle electronica, or folktronica as it has been somewhat obviously termed, familiar to [...]
