Mauro Remiddi may not be a new name if you've followed his days of scoring short films in the late '90s or if you were a fan of British indie pop band Sunny Day Sets Fire. However, Remiddi is currently gaining a following on his own for releasing music under the moniker Porcelain Raft . After leaving his native country then bouncing from London to New York, the Italian artist's experimentalism has evolved in to woozy bedroom pop that nicely falls in between Beach House and Pink Floyd. Following up his EP "Gone Blind" (released on Acéphale), his debut [...]

Some years ago, Mauro Remiddi moved from his native Rome to London, which was a leap of faith, a mapping out of an equation between connection and disconnection - something that perhaps subtly informs this, his full-length debut, following last year's Gone Blind EP. Remiddi had previously been part of Sunny Day Sets Fire, who released the record Summer Palace in 2008, and explored indie-pop through a Beatles-Velvet Underground prism, with lovely songs like the jangly "Wilderness" and sweetly melancholic "All Our Songs". Unfortunately, the band split up in 2009, but Remiddi's voice, which was a [...]

Porcelain Raft is the solo project of one Mauro Remiddi, a humble, energetic man living in London with origins in Rome. His bewitching blend of psych rock and ambient pop is a cut above that of his peers, and is reminiscent of the '09/'10 resurgence of electro-pop in every way but one - Remiddi is 37. Most bands in his category, that is to say upstarts out of say Brooklyn or L.A. that play catchy synth tunes, are in their early 20s. This fact alone makes him a fascinating enigma, and also begs the question: "Where has this dude [...]
It's definitely an exciting Tuesday for new music. Spanning multiple genres, there's truly something for everybody to enjoy - rock out to the new, rawer Cloud Nothings , get nostalgic with the return of Chairlift's semi-retro pop, ease in to the sweet sound of First Aid Kit's sophomore disc, or get lost in the dream world of Porcelain Raft's highly anticipated debut full-length. Stay Useless - Cloud Nothings // Buy No Future/No Past - [...]

There is a certain level of intimacy involved whenever you listen to an album crafted within the cozy confines of the musician's bedroom. While the quality of the end results certainly varies, due to both the talent and production level of those involved, you can't help but feel a bit closer to the songs themselves simply because in most cases the walls between the artist and the listener have been stripped away entirely. In the case of Mauro Remiddi, the sole mastermind behind Porcelain Raft 's stirring debut, Strange Weekend, [...]

Within five minutes of boarding the MSC Poesia at Florida's Port Everglades for Jam Cruise 10, I found myself sharing an elevator with John Oates and Bill Kreutzmann . The beauty of Jam Cruise is that both artists and cruisers share the same space and as we embarked on the tenth Jam Cruise the organizers have figured out which acts best embrace this "lack of a wall" between fan and artist and bring those people back each year. Yes, just five minutes in I was experiencing a magic moment with two of my musical heroes, who couldn't [...]

It's a new year which for me means absorbing all the new music I can. There hasn't been any big album leaks yet for 2012 (when is the last time that happened?), but digging a little deeper led me to Porcelain Raft , a dream/shoegaze pop project from Londoner Mauro Remiddi, previously of Sunny Day Sets Fire . His upcoming album is called Strange Weekend and the first single is the wonderful "Put Me To Sleep". It's a beautifully crafted track, anchored by hypnotic drum machine and atmospheric synths, with an infectious chorus pulling you into the [...]

Just when you thought the festival season was over, that it was safe to hang up any notion of seeing in one sitting a full working day's worth of bands until next year, along comes Constellations to sweep away the November blues. (The 12th of November, to be exact.) In the style popularised by ATP's Butlins jaunts, this is a single-venue indoors one-dayer, using the fantastic facilities at Leeds University as a base for a five-room shindig. At this stage in the year one might be wary of repetition; and whilst there are some [...]

The 90s were great. Well, they may have been. I was relatively young during that time, so I really only remember the music, movies, and TV shows, but those things were great. It may be unfair, but Yuck is an English band that has been lumped in with a group of 90s revival bands. Based on their debut self-titled album, one can quickly notice the similarities to Dinosaur Jr (when the tambourine came in the first time I heard "Get Away", I thought I might be listening to a deluxe edition of [...]

Hoxeyville Music Festival: Aug. 19 - 21 Set on 80 acres of northern Michigan field and forest, the 9th Annual Hoxeyville Music Festival proved once again that a homegrown music fest can give fans an experience that corporate sponsorships and venture capital simply cannot touch. However, one must also take heed that if the biggest festivals can be rife with organizational SNAFUs, then smaller fests can be a veritable logistical clusterfuck. As with many small festivals, the emphasis tends to fall as much on the overall experience as the music itself. To that [...]

My first Camp Bisco outing was this past weekend, and it just happened to be the ten-year anniversary. That meant big names and monumental performances for sunny Mariaville, New York. The festival, aggregated around the popular electronic jam band The Disco Biscuits, took place in upstate New York on the beautiful Indian Lookout Country Club. Getting into the festival was a bit of a hassle, but once inside, you knew you had reached wonderland-A modern Woodstock. You'd have to go to see for yourself just how deep the rabbit hole goes, but I'll do my best to convey to you [...]

Wednesday, June 1, 2011 Days are warmer. Breezes feel cooler. It's summer, and the soundtrack to our lives is set to station the sounds of hazy, lo-fi songs. Filling my summer prescription this season is Porcelain Raft - the singular outfit worn by Mauro Remiddi. Previously of Sunny Day Sets Fire, Remiddi's current musical take is leagues apart from his former days. Having gone from a quintet to a solo work, the displaced Italian in London self-records all that is Porcelain Raft, which isn't much at all - [...]
Last night was Another Form of Relief's first outing as a DJ, at the lovely Moogie Wonderland in Rochester. There were a lot of reasons why last night could have been a failure, from me not having a clue what I was doing to the event being moved to a new venue at a relatively late hour. I'd say it turned out rather well though, with a good number through the door, and there actually being a proper dance party through the second and third sets. Here's what I played across the four sets: [...]

Well, it's over! What an incredible weekend it's been. Out of my four experiences with this wonderful festival, this year has certainly been one of the best, not just in terms of high quality acts, but of the entire festival itself. A more efficiently run festival combined with better security and competent staff resulted in less crowds and a much better atmosphere. Hit the jump for a recap of all the acts I saw yesterday MENOMENA (B) Being up so late last night, I [...]
Zurich-born singer/songwriter Sophie Hunger has been described elsewhere as "Laura Marling, Beth Orton and Björk in one folk-rocking package" and, while this is actually a neat summation of Hunger's work, it tells only part of the story ('Lovesong to everyone', for instance, has all the moody trip-hop introspection of a Portishead track). The amount of female talent out there nowadays is overwhelming, but Hunger's capacity for performing in multiple languages while still sounding stunning sets her apart from the candid crooners collective. Hunger's Swiss upbringing has provided her with an as-yet-unparalleled ability to express herself not only in [...]

Day 4 of SXSW was perhaps the most fun of all, and it began with the most delicious vegan peanut butter cup I've ever had. I washed it down with an agave wheat beer at the Spider House, where Norwegian noisers the Megaphonic Thrift rocked me back to the early nineties with their can't-quite-put-my-finger-on -it nostalgic noise concoction. It felt like a couple dashes of Dino J, a pinch of Sugar, and a sprinkle of… what? The Meat Puppets? Tripmaster Monkey? Poster Children? You know how the smell of pink sawdust can bring [...]

Italian Marco Remiddi creates a synthier, poppier, altogether happier style of computer composed songs as Porcelain Raft . Perhaps overshadowed in 2010 by Perfume Genius, who made a similar style of bedroom lo-fi that appeared from nowhere, becoming the surprise find of last summer, Gone Blind is a collection of dream pop ballads, performed solo looping guitar, keyboards, vocals and synths. Porcelain Raft - Gone Blind EP Living in London and previously in a band called Sunny Day Sets Fire, Remiddi only [...]

[The weekend's Culture Collide festival was all about sampling wares from all over the globe. You couldn't get to everything, but your faithful Buzz Bands honcho, along with contributors David McKay and Addy Danti, submit these quick impressions from Friday night. Photo by L. Schaffer Ben Arnold Well, now you've gone and done it. You were just so pumped about the inaugural Philly F/M Festival (which kicks off tonight) that you took the plunge and purchased one of those shiny all-access passes, didn't you? At the time, it made sense: With most shows costing between $10-$20, why wouldn't you drop a cool $100 and get access to everything? (Of course, if you're a student, you were able to get one at the discounted rate of $70; if you're a slacker who didn't get [...]
