Monday, August 23, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: The Sword will be blowing ears out tonight at Waterloo Records. You should go. Partly to celebrate the release of Warp Riders (the band's third LP), but mostly because every Monday should entail a good amount of headbanging. The event starts at 7pm and it's oh-so very FREE. Time now for the five tracks that impressed me over the weekend. Enjoy. : Still Corners - Don't Fall In Love : Here's [...]
A quick search through the QBiM archives will reveal that this is not the first time I've mentioned Justin Bieber on this site, but it is the first time I've ever posted any of his music. I am not familiar with Bieber's "U Smile" but I've become totally engrossed by this version of the song that's popped up online this week-one that's been slowed down 800%. This 35 minute masterwork has been described by NY Mag as "Sigur Rós doing Vangelis covers in a cathedral being washed away by the sea." Thanks [...]

Oh man, got a bunch of good remixes for you today. I'll keep it brief, but know this: 1. This Sybarite Remix of The Antlers' "Atrophy" is the first worthwhile remix from Hospice that I've found, and it's gorgeous. 2. This Sleigh Bells remix takes an awesome upbeat song into chillwave territory without losing its power. 3. This Kelis remix is dope to the max, mainly because it features Chiddy Bang, the baller rap group out of Philly. [...]
This is about the 40th live video of Antlers doing "Sylvia" to surface since the release of the excellent Hospice , but this video of the band performing "Sylvia" on Seattle's KEXP is the first that shows the subtle differences between the recorded material and the live stuff. Since Hospice was mostly a studio creation, these guys have changed up the songs on the road. I've seen them three times in the last year, and every time the songs get slightly different. Mostly, they've gotten more subdued, which is on display above. Go to KEXP [...]

The Antlers stopped by KEXP a few months back and dropped performances of "Atrophy" (above), "Shiva" and "Sylvia" (below) from last year's terrific album Hospice live in the studio. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, Justin Stivers started the Pet Ghost Project musings as a basement recording experiment around 2003. Despite comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel, Animal Collective, Pavement and Tortoise (to name a few), the band has successfully carved out an endearing niche in a dark corner of the musical world that is entirely theirs. A former member of The Antlers (bassist on Hospice ), Stivers has recorded and produced 6 albums to date. Recently acquiring the help of fellow multi-instrumentalists Jacob More, Justin Gonzales and Chris Patin (member of Austin's [...]
After leaving The Antlers to focus his own work, Justin Stivers has finally put his solo career into motion, with two full albums sitting under his belt. The first release will be his own winter variations EP, set for release on September 14. According to Justin, " winter variations is a product of schizophrenia. After nearly a year of tracking and mixing Pet Ghost Project 's newest LP Shelf Life (set for release in 2011), focus meandered. The slow process of releasing an album just wasn't sitting right. (We) were constantly [...]

We asked Spring Offensive to create a mixtape of their favourite songs and tell us a bit about all of them and why they mean so much to the band. It's a pretty eclectic but very awesome set of tunes. It's also available as a spotify playlist for your listening pleasure. Spring Offensive Spotify Playlist for The 405 - ( Click Here! ) The Antlers: 'Kettering' A truly incredible track from a truly incredible album ('Hospice'). For us, this song was a massive influence on [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone Last Saturday night, after a long day in the sun at Lollapalooza, I walked the six or so city blocks from where I was staying in Chicago to the House of Blues for the pre-Lolla appearance of The Antlers and The National . The House of Blues, notorious for its Vegas-esque swank and commercialized kitsch is situated on one of the prettiest corners of Chicago, right across the river from Dearborn and Wacker and at the foot of the Wilo-famous Marina Towers [...]
Lollapalooza 2010. Day Three. Recap. Go. 8:45 p.m.: The Arcade Fire Win Butler of the Arcade Fire To close out Lollapalooza 2010 on Sunday night, it really was a tale of two headliners. One the south end of grant park, in arguably the bigger area, you had a newly reunited Soundgarden with their big metallic and grungy fueled riffs taking center stage. Unlike Rage Against the Machine or Pavement, the Soundgarden reunion wasn't really something fans [...]

The Sunday of a Festival always marks a bittersweet occasion; whilst Sunday may have been one step closer to the comfort of a real bed, it also marked the imminent end of Latitude 2010 and with it one of the most enjoyable festival experiences I've had. Latitude Festival - Sunday Day 3 Acts Watched = The Antlers, Mark Watson, Dirty Projectors, Yeasayer, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Temper Trap, Jonsi, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend Highlight [...]
Playing for free last night for Hudson River Park's River Rocks summer series, the Antlers debuted a brand new song for the New York City crowd. Slow and methodical, and featuring a lot of Peter Silberman's haunting falsetto, the new untitled track builds at an unassuming, but glacially beautiful pace. While it features none of the typical Antlers-style explosions of emotion found on last year's Hospice , it's more surprising and affecting for it. Check the video above, captured by (((unartig))) . [ Pitchfork ]
At this point in time, I've probably seen The Antlers perform selections from Hospice (my favorite album of 2009) in excess of thirty times. However, somehow, each and every gig is more magnificent than the last. Last night's River Rocks show (which featured two brand new songs) was absolutely flawless from start to finish. Official [...]

Antlers ' Hospice , a narrative driven album singing of misery and celebration ambiguously illustrates the pains of a dying entity. "Atrophy", a standout track, exhibits the frailty of the situation and the constant sadness present in such a circumstance. In my painting inspired by the lyrics, I chose to emphasize this fragile emotion in the females expression as she sits alone reflecting on a relationship's slow deterioration. Antlers - Atrophy

Four Tet: There is Love in You I've been a big Four Tet fan since it was considered a Fridge side project and have loved everything I've heard Kieren Hebden do. Rounds is his best, still, and Pause and Everything Ecstatic are excellent as well. When he released the Ringer EP last year I was glad to see Hebden stretching into new territory, even if more overtly danceable music veers away from where my tastes typically lie. I really liked that EP anyway, and I like a lot of [...]
The first time I ever heard the name Sharon Van Etten , I thought old lady. I think it's a combination of a former school teacher I used to get drunk as a bartender who would flirt with everyone after a second glass of chardonnay and the last name prefix "Van". But, Van Etten is changing my connotations of her name, as project after project has seen her collaborate with some of the biggest names around. From her haunting vocals on The Antlers' near-perfect record Hospice to live performance collaborations with The National, Bon Iver and Megafaun, [...]
