01 If I'm going to start a project about covers, this is pretty much the way to send it off. I'm not one to state that a cover is better than the original, because without the original, the cover wouldn't exist. This is all very philosophical, but I am a music blogger after all. However, in this situation, the cover made me appreciate the original structure. Ben Marwood 's take on The Postal Service 's is a stripped down, acoustic, melodic, melancholic track (much more along the lines of [...]

New York has a long and storied history when it comes to dance music, but nowadays, with so much focus in the scene being allocated to Berlin and London, New York's club scene has a bit of a "second [club] city" complex. And while many of the city's big clubs leave much to be desired, digging a little deeper in the outer boroughs reveals a handful of world-class parties that stand up with the halcyon days of New York's storied tenure as dance music's capital. Mister Saturday Night, helmed by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, is one of those parties. [...]

I think an argument can be made that the quality of a hip hop track is 75% a reflection of the producer. It's no accident that many of the best hip hop albums of all time featured devastating, fresh beats. Personally, I'm even willing to overlook weak rhymes and inconsistent flow if the beats and ambiance of a track are nailed. So it speaks volumes about to note that New Jersey-based producer Clams Casino has worked with some of the most buzz-friendly up-and-coming MCs in the past few years. He's all over Lil B's tracks, he's all over A$AP Rocky's [...]

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from? We are Vic and Gab , we are sisters currently living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our music lingers in a mix of indie pop/rock with sweet harmonies, hooky bass and guitar lines. I have been enjoying your track 'I Haven't Seen You' for some time. Can you tell The Vinyl District the story behind it? Vic and Gab - I Haven't Seen You I wrote this song with [...]

Vagabondage is a Bay Area, California based folk-punk band that was born over nachos and wine on a tiny stage in an empty theater in San Francisco's Mission District. They have been getting people up on their feet, yelling, drinking and singing along to their songs since 2008. Their new album was conceived at San Francisco's Secret Studios over a bottle of cheap bourbon - Whiskey & Starlight is a combination of the anecdotes, tall tales, and memories shared over countless empty glasses in innumerable shadowy dive bars. They describe it as being "full of [...]

My birthday was last week. On Halloween to be exact. In recent years, Kasey and I had celebrated our birthdays with little getaways, leaving our foggy little city to visit other, sunnier locales. But not this year. Instead, this year I decided I wanted a good, old-fashioned San Francisco-style birthday. And it was great: it was sunny and 75 degrees and we did all of my favorite things. For example, when I first moved to San Francisco I'd spent a plurality of my weekends hanging out with my former roommates at a maroon-colored, rock 'n roll, German beer garden-inspired, biker [...]

Consumer electronics continues to be a sector of the music business that shows no sign of slowing down. New entries in the headphone market are seen almost yearly, and connectivity products like the iPhone and iPad continue to alter the way we consume and discover music. However, I recently came across one company that is taking aim at the portable speaker segment. BoomBotix is a self-funded startup run by first-time entrepreneurs in San Francisco's Mission district. With roots in [...]
Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, Treasure Island Music Festival once again stole the hearts of many with its boisterous carnival themes, quirky booths, genre-appropriate weekend scheduling, and supremely thought-out set rosters. With each set staggered between the two extremely close stages, it was almost impossible to miss a show, allowing the festival goers to pick and choose which shows to attend or skip and quickly run to the nearest wine/beer booth. Day one focused on hip hop, electronica, and dance-pop genres; a day considered to most as the "wilder" day with chaotic crowds and costume-clad attendees. [...]

Kollaboration DC's annual concert was a dazzling showcase of talent that transcended genre boundaries and shattered preconceptions. Founded eleven years ago, Kollaboration is an Asian-American non-profit organization whose motto, "empowerment through entertainment" truly embodies its ethos-to present the public with positive, and more importantly, accurate images of Asian-Americans. While community empowerment is integral to its mission, the entertainment aspect weighs equally heavily in the equation, to the benefit of anyone who has ever attended any of Kollaboration's musical events. Saturday's show at the [...]

A weekly feature in which our writers and photographers share their favourite tracks of the week. Tom Tom Club - 'Genius of Love' (chosen by Jennifer Gannon) Nothing can quite match the inexplicable, unrivalled, simple bliss of twisting and turning your feet on a dancefloor to a tune that feels like its captured the very heartbeat of life. Dancing out the death of the working week and losing yourself to the beat in a crowded room. To have not danced to 'Genius of Love' is to do your soul a grave disservice. With its belching, [...]
Let's go for a dip, shall we? The latest foodie craze has come to Brooklyn via Cali courtesy of Richard Sloven, better known as the Gorilla Guac. So WTF is Gorilla Guac? According to an interview over at NachosNY , Sloven hails from the Mission District of San Francisco, where he began slinging bruised avocados at various corners and gathered quite a following among itinerant, drunken weekend hipsters with his movable feast and punk rock "pay what you want" MO. And now he's here! Sloven moved East to book shows and bartend at [...]
