LANCELOT is the new project from 21 year‐old Sydney producer Lance Gurisik. Formerly recording as AEONS, in 2011 Lance dropped the drums, kicked aside the USB keyboards and embedded himself in the studio to create his own dense style of house music. With a fetish for analogue gear, Lance draws upon his broad knowledge of classical music styles and forms while recording and writing for dance floors – the result sitting somewhere between new‐wave pop and down‐tempo, tropical house. I'm happy to report there's not a dub or step in sight [...]

Just from looking at the tracklist, I already knew that Nas was going to have the best verse on Rich Forever . He didn't disappoint either. Unfortunately, Drake's "Stay Schemin" has "Triple Beam Dreams" in the shadows. I can understand though. Beef is exciting. But, we've been sleeping on this verse long enough. Time to wake up. In "Triple Beam Dreams" Nas tries to help America understand the mind of a young drug dealer, Nas gives us both the sides of the slangin' spectrum. A project minded [...]

Right at the close of the year we come across one of the tidiest finds of 2011. We have fallen completely head over heels in love with this new band and predict that once you too have hit play on the below buttons, you will also be devoting a little piece of your hearts to them. It's been another good year for discovering new music, with a multitude of interesting finds, so topping it off with this new group seems like the perfect way to draw down the curtain on these last twelve months. Our Best Tracks Of 2011 [...]

The most wonderful time of the year, right guys? 'Twas the end of December, and all through the blogosphere, not a creature was stirring, except for the sounds of music writers springin' chub, strokin' egos, and Bon Iverin' via the storied tradition of the "best of" list. Well, The Decibel Tolls participates in that jive as well, save for the latter. Be it as it may. So yeah, man... 2011... shit. 2011 was a turbulent and gnarly year, and as such, we've been treated to some truly stellar music. Funny how that works - civic and economic tension [...]

This flip book was shot at The East Side Social Club Members Meeting at The Blind Barber in New York City and features This is Ivy League 's single, "Leave Me Alone"! If you dig the track you can download it for FREE here !
Who'd have thought one of the best indie rock debuts of the season would come from an Ivy League-bred, string-centered quintet? This New York-by-way-of-Princeton five-piece ekes about as much pop sensibility from jazz instrumentation as anyone not named Walter Becker or Donald Fagen. Miracles of Modern Science 's debut full-length, Dog Year , is crafted using only a violin, cello, mandolin, bass, and drums, which they implement in more of a rock and roll style than the baroque stylings of chamber pop. Put to perfect use in "Strangerous", a bombastic love [...]

What started off as ivy league educated Eric Zeiler's solo project quickly evolved into a five-piece co-ed electro-pop outfit and one of New York City's must see bands otherwise known as Xylos . Now the band is a full family of fun made up of Eric Zeiler (of course), singer Monika Heidemann, keyboardist Nikki Lancy, bassist Jordan Brooks and drummer Chris Berry. The different talents and stories that each member of the group brings to the table is apparent in their music, which is wonderfully eclectic. I had the opportunity to see them earlier this summer at DC9 at Monument's one-year anniversary party where they played [...]

Turnout Records, 2011 Australians have always seemed to run a strange horse in the race of the hipster-driven aughts. Though arguably having a heavy hand in shaping and defining modern indie pop with acts like Architecture in Helsinki , most Aussie bands since then - whether by systematic design or their own disinterest and ineptitude - have failed to make any significant splash on our end of the Earth. Even local legend Nick Cave - boasting a revolving-door band of Bad Seeds that hail from so many different countries that Australia is often nothing more [...]
Alpine - Hands This video directed by Luci Schroder is the very definition of hipster softpron. Surrealistic, gaunt and equal parts offensive, guilty-pleasure + sexy. You're going to like it, even if you don't want to, and you won't be able to look away. This single's brand new, expecting more from this Aussie outfit on Ivy League Records in the near future. Listen to their previous, excellent release, Zurich EP on their Sndcld. Hat tip, Musiccrushgirl .

In this edition: A Thanksgiving edition of Rain from the Cloud, samplers from Friends and Merge Records, news of interest, and videos! Rain from the Cloud: Thanksgiving Edition Alpine - Hands (single) out now on Ivy League Records Notes: This slinky, sultry dance number comes to us from Melbourne. This single from the Aussie sextet is the follow up to the Zurich LP. Watch the video here . [...]

You've most likely heard Catcall's euphoric single "Satellites" by now. Since it's debut as the opening track on (to the best of my knowledge) Fear of Tiger's magical The Guestlist #26, Catcall has taken the blogosphere by storm. Upon first listen to this track, I was immediately struck by emotions. What is this? Who is this? And where can I find more of this? The answer came a week later, when the single was officially released. This burgeoning Sydney (Aussie) based pop-star-and exotic bombshell-is primed to make some [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Let this be a prior warning to the people who continually spam my news feed with cat videos: if you don't curb your obsession, you might just end up in this fetishist cult...or get sent to fight for your KFC in the shower (2.15). 'Hands' is the first single from Alpine's debut record, due out 2012 through Ivy League. www.alpineband.com

This Friday, November 4, Brooklyn punk rockers Mr. Dream will take the stage at the First Unitarian Church playing songs from their new album, Trash Hit . After making their quick transition from the music critiquing world to performing, they're kicking off their Fall tour Friday night, opening for indie supergroup Mister Heavenly. WQHS DJ Aldrin Abastillas chats with drummer and producer Nick Sylvester. Aldrin Abastillas: Your band has a pretty interesting back story. Your members moved from writing about music to actually making music. What led you guys [...]

Around this time in 2008, we reviewed the self-titled EP from Brooklyn-by-way-of-New-Jersey indie rock outfit Miracles of Modern Science . Formed by mandolinist Josh Hirshfeld and vocalist/bassist Evan Younger after meeting at Princeton University in 2004, the duo's ivy league origins informed their sound, a complicated mix of rock and strings that forged a musical niche best described as "orchestral space pop." Now, almost three years later, the band is readying the release of their debut full-length, Dog Year . The album, according to a press release for the effort, is an "impossible collaboration [...]

Meet Catcall . Née Catherine Kelleher, the Australian chanteuse released her first single, "Swimming Pool," last year to rave reviews. "Swimming Pool" is an uncanny slice of Italo disco-referencing indie dance in the vein of Sally Shapiro or the Golden Filter ; the track was helmed by GLOVES , the producer who has remixed fellow down-under acts like Bag Raiders , Van She , and Kimbra . Now, Catcall's ratcheted up the pop on her new single, "Satellites," a pounding piece of '80s nostalgia with a [...]

Variously described as "the finest popsike album ever recorded", "a quirky look at British life in the late 60s with tea and cakes on the lawn, budgerigars and balloons wafting in the breeze" and "Georgio Gomelsky's Lonely Hearts Club Band", you might conclude that this definitive whimsy-psych opus was a premeditated attempt to upstage the Fabs and the Kinks at their own game by a similarly professional outfit. In fact it was the more-or-less accidental result of a dissolute R'n'B covers band ingesting lots of pharmaceuticals, reluctantly writing their own material, being impelled by their uber -persuasive manager/producer to [...]

WQHS (Penn Student Radio) are ready to kick off what will hopefully be one of many seasonal concerts at The Rotunda tonight. And they have definitely used those Ivy League funds to put together a buzz-worthy lineup to help you forget that the event is dry. Brooklyn's Tony Castles will be headlining the bill, but Philly's own Work Drugs may be the one piquing the student body's interest. The local act will be performing their last all ages show of the year so all our under 21 readers should swing by this evening. You'll also be treated [...]
