i don't know what you think while you're sleeping, i hope soon i'll dream with you ♫ Oberhofer - Heart Who: Brad's the name, Oberhofer's the game. But its actually also his name. What : Indie crooner rock, kinda like Local Natives , Throw Me The Statue Where : NYC via Tacoma + Facebook / Amazon When : Debut LP Timecapsules [...]
Atlanta's Wowser Bowser sound kind of like a cross between Throw Me The Statue and the Shout Out Louds to me, which is good because I love both of those bands, and I really dig the synth-infused vibe this southern quartet have going on. "E Dialeda Ho" begins with a buzz and beat that would [...]
I'm really started to get a feel for radio. Five weeks after I started on this foray, things are moving more smoothly and naturally. This week, I went for a chill vibes, by mainly pulling from Metrojolt's extensive chill category. I also interviewed my new friend and French musician Paul Grunelius, who recently started a new project called Blue Audio Experience . We had a nice chat about his process and influences. Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

Slave Ambient starts with a buzz and a warm, acoustic hum that swells into something reminiscent of the Broken Social Scene's glory days. The latest effort by Philly four-piece, the War on Drugs , sonically fits into Secretly Canadian's aesthetic, striking the same emotive chord as label mates Throw Me the Statue or Here We Go Magic. A cohesive fusion between indie pop and what feels like lo-fi folk, the hybridity of their sophomore LP release amplifies the War On Drugs' ability to create lyrical texture and sound. The alum's opener, "Best Night," is subtle and [...]

"Nah, bruv. He's got beef with the guy. I think he'll ghost him, you know, but he may just mug him instead" is a snippet of a conversation I didn't think I'd hear in the middle of Norway, as I carpool from Trondheim airport to a luxury hotel in the centre of the country's third largest city, with three South Londoners talking about things that I would need to look up on Urban Dictionary to ever understand. Cooped uncomfortably in the back of the 8-seater, I'm next to another muso with a first name exactly my own. My namesake [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]

Well, we're just about halfway with the reposts... Today, we feature volumes 9 and 10, which were originally posted in August 2009. Volume 10 holds a special place in this blog's history, because that's when Aaron from Tsururadio offered to post the mix on his blog. That started a bit of following and it has grown ever since. Aaron's moved onto Tsuruphoto, following his passion for photography. He now has a nudie-zine featuring some edgy but tasteful art, several videos to promote the zine and Tsuruphoto, and the occasional mixtape. We owe a big thanks for his early support, and [...]

In the word of Captain Haddock, "Subtropical Sea Louse"! Throw Me the Statue is an indie band out of Seattle, Washington. They signed to Secretly Canadian in 2007 and have released 2 full length LPs. I know all you readers have absurdly short attention spans, but try closing your eyes and listening to "Lolita" or "About to Walk" for two minutes. Shit, even 30 seconds. Throw Me the Statue can sneak up on you. Sure, their recordings might sometimes seem approximate or messy, but they possess a certain knobby-kneed charm. They're back in Washington at the moment but [...]

After three years away Okkervil River have just returned with album of the year contender I Am Very Far . It is an album of towering ambition, one which, if all things were fair in this universe, would propel them into the higher echelons of indie rock. Why it hasn't happened already is a mystery. Their back catalogue stands up to anything that has been produced in the last 15 years. From debut Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See , through to breakthrough Black Sheep Boy , and on [...]
Keith Morris needs a chair. The 55-year-old OFF! front man just ripped through an in-store performance at Atlanta's Criminal Records. His energy level while performing isn't be much diminished from his years in Black Flag and the Circle Jerks; the difference is that now he needs a minute or two to recuperate. The other members of the band, including Morris's collaborator Dmitri Coats, are milling around, moving equipment, and signing copies of OFF!'s debut release, First Four EPs . Morris drains half a bottle of water and warily takes in his immediate surroundings, as if he expects to be [...]

Where to find the Wednesday warriors: ► Hard to believe it's been 10 years since Pete Yorn debuted with "Musicforthemorningafter." The 36-year-old songwriter, who bounced back last year with a sharp self-titled album produced by Frank Black, hits Wiltern Theatre tonight and will mark the anniversary of his first album by playing it in its entirety. Ben Kweller opens. ► Sweaters , Rademacher and Light FM team up for a strong local bill at the Satellite. ► Akron/Family brings its engaging weirdness to the Echo. [...]

Walking Sleep Have the Residency This Month at the Satellite (and a rather serious looking band photo) Here's my guide to free music this week for all you cheap bastards. Monday start out seeing Bronto Skylift at the Silverlake Lounge then drive over to the Satellite for The Californian and Walking Sleep. On Tuesday head over to the Echo for Freddie Gibbs. Wednesday, you might actually have to fork over $10 - $15 for a show. On Thursday go to the Echoplex for Vanaprasta, Stone Darling and Polls. On Friday night hit [...]
![Lou Reed - Poetry Reading, NYC [1991]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3279465_lg.jpg)
These tracks truly speak for themselves, made up of Lou Reed reading his poetry and lyrics for a crowd in New York City, 1991. Heroin is a lyrical masterpiece, so it's great to hear how he gives these words credence in the context of intimate poetry. Dirty Boulevard is a great testament of Lou Reed's love/hate relationship with New York. It Wasn't Me is a thrilling political piece where he spears those who blame him for being a "bad" influence and causing his listeners to "sin". The timing can be weird, when someone has to read something originally written in [...]

Top choices for what looks to be a wet Saturday night: ► Tonight's show at the Satellite could be the last we hear from Admiral Radley for a while. The quartet — the union of Jason Lytle (pictured during last year's Also I Like to Rock performance at the Hammer Museum) and Aaron Burtch from Grandaddy, and Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray from Earlimart — soon will return to other endeavors. Espinoza and Murray will work on the follow-up to 20082s "Hymn and Her," while Lytle will work on his next solo album, as [...]

If you're stuck in a pattern trying to decide whether or not you like your acoustic folk or your bedroom electronica more, then you'll be lucky to have stumbled upon Emil & Friends . You're likely to find the best of both worlds evident in the work here, and so Emil has solved your great dilemma. They just released their Downed Economy EP , and we've got an unreleased track to offer you, which still sounds like everything on the EP. It's a catchy little number that seems to twist [...]
