The concept of a "trilogy" is such an overdone thing. Be it film trilogies, album trilogies, book trilogies, video game trilogies... we have all seen trilogies in various forms of entertainment media to the point of it becoming banal. At the end of the Deathspell Omega experience however, do not be alarmed if you wake up to find yourself in Silent Hill. Clandestine French black metallers Deathspell Omega are a rare breed; they have had their fair share of primitive black metal days just like most other black metal forces of the metal underworld had, and yet after only [...]

Lacuna Coil Dark Adrenaline Century Media 23 January 2012 by Von Dark Adrenaline . It just doesn't sound right, does it? It sounds a bit like a knock-off deodorant that looks a bit like Lynx, that you might find in Poundland. Not a good start then. [...]

Just released on Monday was Hospitality Drum-n-Bass 2012. 31 tracks of fresh drum-n-bass in the mix. Hospitality , the award winning events arm of Hospital Records , which recently won "Best Event" at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards, brings you the next installment in the critically acclaimed "Hospitality Drum & Bass" series, mixed by Hospital director and studio stalwart Tomahawk. The mix is a great blend of various drum-n-bass sounds and should have something for everyone. TONS of big name producers in the mix, including Netsky, London Elektricity, High Contrast, Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Makoto [...]

(Post title off China Miéville's stunning Embassytown, go read ). Dear 20jazzfunkgreats, Last night I had a dream. I dreamt of a blue orb spinning in the unfathomable blackness, over a turbulent ocean governed by invisible forces. It shone like a candle about to be snuffed out, the shining I saw was that of life spread across this orb, one that illuminates, however feebly, the quadrant of space it has been allocated. The light's shifting frequencies contained the fractal complexities of the ecosystem that fuels it. I [...]
This month marks the 10th anniversary of Fluxblog. I will be doing a few things to celebrate the occasion over the course of the year, but the main thing is that I will be putting together survey mixes for each year the site has existed. The mixes will be released on the first weekday of each month this year, culminating in revised/expanded versions of the 2010 and 2011 mixes and this year's survey at the start of December. 2002 was an interesting year, with a lot of major stuff bubbling up as the identity of the decade [...]

Remember when Merge Records was synonymous with genre-defining indie rock and had a whole roster of bands whose albums you couldn't wait to get your hands on? Well, guess what? They still are, and do! The venerable Durham, North Carolina, label proves they're still up to their game with two releases this week in heavy rotation at KEXP. Bay Area veterans Imperial Teen return with their fifth album overall and their third on Merge, Feel the Sound , which, according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "continues to refine and expand upon their infectious blend of power-pop, [...]

What started out as a simple iTunes Shuffle feature has now turned into something a bit more earnest and appealing with Moguai curating a whole 9 tracks alongside an audio run-down and video for each. The Germans brand of big-room electro has leant towards his signing to Deadmau52s own imprint Mau5trap and has helped surface him as a go-to for thumping originals and in-demand remix duties. A dance artist commissioned to playfully produce not one but two full-length albums in just as many years? Plainly put it just doesn't [...]
Local (to me) metal/punk act Black Breath will be taking Swedes Tormented and Victims on tour in Europe: 03/29 - Baroeg, Rotterdam (NL) 03/30 - Trix Bar, Antwerp (BEL) 03/31 - De Kreun, Kortrijk (BEL) 04/02 - The Underworld, London (UK) 04/03 - Islington Mill, Manchester (UK) 04/04 - Club For Ibach, Cardiff (UK) 04/08 - Caracol, Madrid (ESP) 04/10 - La Dynamo, Toulouse (FRA) 04/11 - Tap-Tap, Schaffhausen (CH) 04/12 - Juha [...]

Legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen releases a new album this week, Old Ideas . The Big Sleep's Nature Experiments , Gotye's Making Mirrors , and The Pines: Dark So Gold are all albums I have heard and can strongly recommend. One Model Nation's Total Werks Vol. 1 (1969-1977) is the companion music to Dandy Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor's new graphic novel, One Model Nation [...]
Conducted January 4, 2012. Boldy James' 2011 release Trapper's Alley: Pros and Con's was my favorite full-length from last year. Thanks to a gift for evocative writing, and a subtle, low-key poetic sensibility, Boldy released one of the year's most powerful records. I've spoken about it in detail on Pitchfork , but if you missed it last year, you may want to #GetInTune . Tell me a little bit about your background, when you [...]

There's a common thread that ties together each of Gusmano Cesaretti 's photography collections. Each collection displays his uncanny ability to capture a specific place and time, in a way that feels almost mythical, and yet also deeply personal. While each series, taken as a whole, paints a sort of romanticized portrait of the place in question, the idiosyncratic details of each picture tell a story of their own. The pair of collections currently being shown at Los Angeles' Roberts & Tilton gallery- the first documenting 1970s East L.A., and the second depicting the harsh realities of [...]

" Brighter ", WhoMadeWho 's third album is just round the corner (February 27th) and after unveiling the video for 'Inside World', this week the Danish band released a limited edition 73 along with John Grant's (ex The Czars) acoustic version. But if it wasn't enough with that, a remixes EP has also seen the light, and what remixes! ' Inside World The Remixes ' features 3 reworks with its marked own personality, different basslines that equally will drive you crazy! The three of them have played with Jeppe Kjellberg's vocals and Tomas Høffding's soft [...]
It seems that we can't get enough of The Black Dahlia Murder and Skeletonwitch's UK tour. Not only did about half our writing staff pile into the Camden Underworld when the tour hit London , but our photographer in chief, Gary Wolstenholme , was on hand to snap it when the tour arrived in his native Sheffield. His sexy, sexy pictures are just after the jump. -- The Black Dahlia Murder @ Sheffield Corporation - 19 January 2012 [...]

Bjork's 1993 "Debut" album was a lovely piece of left of centre pop music and the tracks fell into the hands of some of the best producers in electronic music for remix work. While these mostly popped up on the vinyl releases of the singles, One Little Indian kindly put out a CD compilation entitled "The Best Mixes From The Album Debut For All The People Who Don't Buy White Labels" . While the pack included reworkings from The Black Dog and The Sabres of Paradise [...]

The Agony And The Ecstasy « .
