Rarely will a band come around that encapsulates the full spectrum of what we try to do here at Hidden Track. As purveyors of improvisational music, indie rock, Americana and general open-mindedness, there's a very short list of bands who embrace those same interests in one fell swoop. However, Montreal-based Plants and Animals are one of those rare anomalies. [Photo by Caroline Desilets] Taking their latest standout album, The End of That , as case in point, Plants and Animals take sharp sonic turns from track to track, [...]

Legendary German DJ Sven Väth , of Cocoon Records fame, has issued a lengthy, deeply personal holiday message to his fans. In his statement (read it in its unedited entirety below), Väth reflects on 2011, pointing out various professional highlights and accomplishments that happened during his 30th year behind the decks. Having traveled to nearly every continent this year (except for Antarctica), Väth reveals how one particular DJ gig at a festival in Sydney at the time of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan later moved him to tears. "In the car I started crying my eyes out, the [...]

Sculptured's debut, The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled , is a prototypical forgotten gem. Released on then-upstart The End Records at a time when American death metal was all but dead itself, the album had more in common with European avant-garde and melodeath acts than anything on these shores. The years following its release saw founder and mastermind Don Anderson balancing his evolving guitar chops between his own band and another budding Pacific Northwest act known as Agalloch - which is where most listeners (myself included) come in. Agalloch gained a foothold in the [...]

ward robinson King Tuff is Kyle Thomas from Brattleboro, Vermont. His dad works at a mental asylum and his mom special-orders socks with giant shark mouths on them. He was already part of psych-folk band Feathers and heavy-dude band Witch with J Mascis, but in 2008 he took the name King Tuff and released Was Dead on little New York label Colonel. He recorded every song all by himself in the dead of night and it's one of the best power-pop-rock-'n'-roll-fr eaked-out-freak-in-full-freak- mode albums of the decade. Find it, buy it, cook [...]

When hardcore Radiohead fan Peter Bergmann saw the words 'we plants are happy plants' printed inside the booklet of a live CD of his his most favourite band, he instantly knew he had found the perfect alias for himself. With this artist name seeded, he quicky started to grow and evolve into one of today's most unique electronic music artists. Despite his very young age, that being only 23, his musical roots lead back a few years, to playing in various inarticulate teenage bands covering Nirvana and the likes. Out of neccessity, Peter taught himself how to play [...]

The new Coldplay album is QUITE the hot topic as of late. Their track "Paradise" gets remixed by "We Plants Are Happy Plants" and it's quite the hot ticket as well! The group is actually a solo project by Hungarian based producer, Peter Bergmann. Their specialty is an electronic pop and disco journey through space, time, love and emotions. NOICE! What's this, a Monday Video Hits? Unheard of! It's strange I know, but this was intended for last week until work decided to kick my ass on Thursday & Friday, and so Monday videos it is! This is going to come as a surprise to roughly no one that reads the hill, but trying to make a go of it as a working band in Canada is hard. Very hard. I certainly knew this, but reading this blog entry from Toronto's Papermaps about their recent HPX adventure was a good reminder of [...]

By Louise Coles Conceived in the same terrain as Wild Beasts and British Sea Power, new on the scene Kendal bred Woman's Hour are an exciting new London based Art-Pop collective, quivering with electronic beats married to clean and uncomplicated guitar and bass lines. Similarly to their contemporaries, their soft then strong vocals coupled with their amassing melody teeters into calypso territory, flirting with a myriad of other genres, while never losing the core sound of the band. Here, Will Burgess, bassist and vocals, speaks exclusively to Muso's Guide about [...]

Review - Dolly Parton @ The Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood, CA - 07/22/11 Wowzers, This is the second review from Sussanna Dooley Booney we have gotten this week alone and her recap of Dolly Parton at the Hollywood Bowl is def a doozy. Just the other day Sussanna submitted her review of Ben Folds @ The Wiltern and is really on top of her concert reviewing. Sussanna even went the extra mile this time around and created a kick ass video adventure about her Dolly Parton experience. Enjoy and [...]

. . . A few months ago, Cosmo invited me to write an article about my discovery of heavy metal during the days of my youth. George Lynch and the music of Dokken were a big part of those days and my initial inspiration to pick up the guitar. Interviewing someone you grew up listening to from an early age is a bit more intimidating than perhaps talking to a more recent musical influence or a contemporary peer. However, I found Mr. Lynch to be an extremely humble and soft-spoken man, who, in this interview, recalls [...]
This year, I have made a conscious decision to steer away from covering the big corporate festivals. I think the ethos of festivals has always been that chance to break free from everyday life. There are a few exceptions to the rule; Glastonbury, latitude & Bestival have a strong identity, but apart from that you would find it hard to distigush one field full of people from another. As with all well run festivals, Jelly Festival has a diverse feel to it. Often dubbed 'A Family Friendly Secret Garden', it nestles in the fashionable North Norfolk Countryside. [...]
. . . At some point, I started feeling guilty about my ignorance about nature. I have all this knowledge about obscure metal band splits and seven inches, but when I walk outside, I can't identify very large things called trees. That's a poor show of human citizenship. Enter Phyte Club . (Yes, I am talking about Phyte Club.) When I discovered a metal-related site that could put together a coherent sentence in English, I clung onto it for dear life. Proprietor Katie writes about plants and metal (OK, mostly plants), and shows lots [...]

As the lines between underground electronic music and savvy, accessible pop continue to blur, London Duo Plant Plants are set to strike while the iron's hot and show the world the leftfield pop that they've been honing since their inception in 2010. Plant Plants are friends, Stuart Francis and Howard Whatley. Spawned from a mutual love of film scores, weird guitar tunings & heavy beats, theirs is a sound which effortlessly combines the rare blend of electronic and eclectic imagery that sets them apart from contemporary comparisons. Here Stuart and Howard chat to us [...]

The between-album tour is as good as it gets. No longer is a band supporting a particular album, so this brand of show is the best time to catch a varied assortment of songs from the band's past. Plus, if you are lucky, the band or artist has already begun work on their next album and debuts some of these songs in the live setting. Such was the case with Yeasayer's current tour, which played its second date on Sunday night at the Glass House in Pomona. This was my first time seeing the Brooklyn electro-hippies, but [...]
