Fountains Of Wayne and Weezer: they may be some distance apart in terms of popularity/record sales, but their respective careers share notable similarities. Both bands got off the mark with two superb albums (Fountains Of Wayne and Utopia Parkway/Blue Album and Pinkerton ) whose geek-rock aesthetic and irresistible hooks were mixed with songwriting of surprising depth and empathy. Both took a bit of a breather before returning with a somewhat-dumbed-down approach ( Welcome Interstate Managers / Green Album and Maladroit ), nonetheless retaining a knack for killer three-minute wonders ('Valley Winter Song', 'No Better [...]
A special Oxegen edition of our weekly feature, whereby our writers and photogarphers share their favourite tracks of the past seven days. Tame Impala - 'Alter Ego' (Chosen by Daryl Keating) It's easy to label Tame Impala as mere copycats who are latching on to the past glories of the late '60s. Yet, in doing so you'd be shamefully understating one of the few contemporary psychedelic rock bands that are genuinely talented. Perhaps people can't get over how much their lead singer, Kevin Parker, sounds like John Lennon. Or maybe there's just no room [...]

If there's anything to take away from Weezer 's Memories Tour (or The Blinkerton Tour), it's that memories hurt. Well, that and something we'd like to coin "restless frontman syndrome", but more on that later. Instead, think about the concept of memories, at least for a second. They're nothing but fleeting images we return to time and time again. They come and go like fads on MTV. They make us feel warm, but only momentarily, simply because we're always left with the cold, stark realization that they're a part of our past - a place we can't revisit. Somehow, [...]

Sometimes I view this as a religious symbol. Haters gonna hate, and Weezer hating may have reached its pinnacle this year, especially with the highly publicized " We will offer Weezer $10,000 to break up " petition. I may be in the minority of "hip" rock critics of the 21st century, but I think there's something about Weezer that will always be compelling. Whether it is the crisp, pop goodness of the Blue Album or the LOST hyping Hurley , Rivers and gang prove that they truly know their craft. Many of my friends [...]

We all have our most beloved Weezer memories (hopefully none of yours involve Make Believe ... unless it also involves a bonfire). Well, when the band hit the road for their "Memories Tour", you know, the one they'll be playing The Blue Album and Pinkerton on respective nights , you can make some new Weezer-related memories when you win a pairs of tickets to the January 7th show at Chicago, IL's Aragon Entertainment Center (where the band will be playing The Blue Album and a mix of greatest hits.) [...]
In the unlikely event that a prize was given to the band who managed best to alienate an adoring fanbase, then surely that prize belongs to Weezer . The slow, ugly, and bizarre process of attrition through which they flipped the bird to said fans is a breathtaking exercise in cynicism; and actually quite spectacular in a horrifying way. The process was slow at first. The goodwill Weezer had earned as a result of their first two albums, the Blue Album 's harmonic monument to teen heartbreak and modern classic Pinkerton 's raw emo, dissipated [...]

Weezer Pinkerton (2010 Deluxe Edition) [Geffen; 2010] Links: Weezer | Geffen | Purchase on Insound Posted by Brent Koepp on 17 November 2010 Pinkerton will go down for a lot of things, but it will most likely be remembered for being the beginning of the end for a once universally-praised band, leaving many music fans to [...]

In 1994 Weezer released their eponymous debut Blue Album . Rivers Cuomo and Co's sun drenched, geeky guitar pop blended with the grunge soaked vibe of the 90s and saw the record go Gold in just under seven months, and sees it currently stand at thee times Multiplatinum. Just two years later saw the release of the now infamous Pinkerton . Ignoring previous power-pop harmonies, Weezer delved straight into a disturbingly gritty, emotionally raw, roughly recorded concept album loosely based around Madame Butterfly . In complete contrast to the former it was largely criticised by [...]

Photography by Hana H . Yep... more Weezer . You know, there used to be a time when years would span before we'd get any new Weezer tunes. B-sides were spoken of, discussed, but rarely heard. Rivers gets married and laid on a regular basis then suddenly we get more music than we probably could hope to want. So, to be efficient, I'm going to cover two releases that are showing up on at your favourite torrent sites record shops. A [...]
And now, for a fit of nostalgia: Super Nintendo. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest . Vocalist/Guitarist Rivers Cuomo. Basstst Matt Sharp. Drummer Pat Wilson. Guitarist Brian Bell. Weezer . Pinkerton . That game and that album are forever entwined in my pop-addled mind. We'd had the video game for a while ( Pinkerton didn't show up until nearly a year after that purchase), but I can still recall "Tired of Sex" starting up as the game credits flashed upon our guest room's television. If I was [...]

From the late 19802s into the entirety of the '902s, if you were a pop, country, soul or rock artist aiming for that crossover mega-smash (and the chance to really show off your pipes), there was only one songwriter you needed to seek out: Diane Warren . Push one of Warren's super-emotional, cheese-tastic power ballads as a single and you were damn near guaranteed a number one record followed shortly after by a trunk load of award nominations. Just ask Toni Braxton, who earned her biggest hit ever and a Grammy with 19962s Warren-penned [...]

On November 2 nd , Weezer will release a rarities album called Death to False Metal , to coincide with the deluxe edition re-release of Pinkerton . Rivers Cuomo has described False Metal as a collection of songs recorded since their early days up to the present, that just didn't quite fit in with the final cut to their albums. One song in particular seems so out of place, it's no wonder it didn't make the final cut; the song in question, "Unbreak My Heart" by Toni Braxton. According to American Songwriter, [...]
Only weeks after releasing their eighth studio album, Hurley , Weezer return with a new collection of tracks, this time an ensemble of reworked B-sides. Originally titled Odds & Ends (no doubt a reference to The Who), the band opted for the more tongue-in-cheek moniker, Death to False Metal . Unlike Rivers Cuomo's successful Alone releases, however, this effort sounds and feels like an actual album. But that's the point, at least according to Cuomo, who says, "Together, they are the album that should logically follow Hurley [...]

Holy shit. Is it just me, or was September bursting at the seams with good music? From predictably great stuff to overwhelmingly pleasant surprises, it really felt like this month had it all. For the first time, ten felt like too small a number; there was just too damn much great stuff that I wanted to include here. But you know, I am a professional guy-who-sits-at-his-computer-a nd-rants-about-music, and as such, I finally whittled this week's list down to the article's namesake. So let's get on with it, shall we? Bad Religion – 'The Day That [...]
Are you one of those people who hated Raditude so much that you're willing to pay money for Weezer to disappear? Well, here's your chance, thanks to Seattle resident and anti-new-Weezer advocate James Burns. According to The Stranger (via Pitchfork ), Burns has launched a campaign to raise $10 million with the hope of using it to entice the Rivers Cuomo-led outfit into retirement. Hmm... I wonder how much Justin Bieber could get ? Despite portraying himself as anything but, Burns writes that [...]
The 2010 edition of the Voodoo Music Experience isn't set to launch for another month, which leaves plenty of time to perfect your day by day schedule. So what do we got? Well, Friday, October 29th features a tasty mix of Muse, Metric Weezer, and Hot Chip to close out the day, though the latter two acts will be pinned up against each other at the 7:45 time slot. Plus, Jonsi plays the same time as Muse, which probably doesn't matter much considering Icelandic indie pop and mainstream arena rock don't usually have similar fan bases, [...]

Joel Madden and Rivers Cuomo discussed upcoming Weezer concerts and Weezer's new album Hurley: Joel: Hey @ riverscuomo I'm getting my tix for the bluealbum & Pinkerton shows u should add nights 4 the greenalbum, make believe & Hurley! Rivers: @ JoelMadden thanks, man. will be playing lots of goodies from the other albums too. would love to meet u at the shows. [...]
