So the pretty lil event site Winter is the New Summer that Devin and I have been working on has officially launched in full! Whoo! Let's have a 750ml salute to that! We did a soft launch in October, then last week we introduced the poster concept and from this week on until the end of winter we will have a different member of the Portland scene acting as a Poster Boy or Poster Girl, holding up our event picks of the week, this week being Rocky formerly of the Hush and currently of [...]

It isn't hard to get a great soundtrack when your movie is all about the music industry. Specifically the british music industry in the late 70's to the early 90's. 24 Hour Party People is a great film about the rise and fall and rise of Factory Records following the great Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan) on his raucous and wild adventures in the world of music and music business in Manchester,UK. This soundtrack totally captures and bottles up the insanity and tone of this time period. It is epic to say the least. The soundtrack is heavily Joy Division/New Order [...]
Mr. Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdal, was on Criminal Minds last night as a hilariously stereotypical goth musician, and since he's so dark (at least for the role), he covered Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on the show last night. He was (presumably, since I don't watch CBS) the murderer, right? It's like on Law & Order ; if a celebrity like Lewis Black is the guest star, you know he's either going to be killed or he killed someone. [ Videogum ]
In tonight's episode, Rossdale plays a goth vampire rock star suspected of murder. And he performs "Love Will Tear Us Apart." No need to wait by the Tivo, you can watch right now . Start picking out your dress for the Emmys, Gwen.
By: David SchultzIf the photo to the left didn't make it clear, My Morning Jacket will appear on FOX's American Dad, Seth MacFarlane's unfunny version of Family Guy. This has the potential to supplant the Goth kids channelling Ian McKellen's defiance of the Balrog to the strains of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as the show's defining moment. On the November 22 episode, Stan (the

...is (deep breath) still my favourite version of the song. Not only do I have the same confession as Liz (though why we feel the need to confess, I'm still working on); that Paul Young's version was the first I heard but also that when I heard the Joy Division version a few years later I thought it was a ropey Paul Young cover - and in fact, that's how I still see things now. When No Parlez came out I was perhaps 11 or 12 and Love Will Tear Us Apart played a significant part [...]
I've finally returned from my "European Tour" (aka how to visit 4 countries in 10 days ), so expect more frequent blog updates from now on. Anyway, during my wicked trip I had the chance to see Muse and Gary Numan live (along with The Horrors , Anne Clarke , The Human League , Front 242 and Gang Of Four ), as well as having a hell of a great time in Amsterdam thanks to Andy and Wendy (cheers mates!). On top of that, when I [...]

Filed under: News Whether you think they're better suited to hipster or pop radio audiences, Kings of Leon can now officially claim to be for lovers. The Tennessee rockers beat out Marvin Gaye , Al Green and Eric Clapton in a love song competition sponsored by dating site eHarmony UK. As part of its Perfect Mixtape Challenge , the site -- somewhat surprisingly -- identified KOL's hot-blooded 'Sex on Fire' as its users' favorite love song. Standard romantic fare like Gaye's 'Let's Get [...]
As anyone who has read Mary Coughlan 's new autobiography Bloody Mary will testify, no other woman has more right to sing the blues than she. A rollercoaster ride of child abuse, alcoholism and heartache, her thunderous lifestyle has often overshadowed the adroit musical career that put her in the public eye in the first place. Her latest album The House Of Ill Repute has earned her the best reviews of her career and harvested a whole new generation of fans. Exploring the seedy world of prostitution, pimps and burlesque, she will be showcasing her [...]

A handful of movies ( Monster , Boys Don't Cry , Grave of the Fireflies ) have ranked among the best of the last couple decades while ensuring that anyone would never want to see them a second time. These films are so emotionally raw and effective that only the most dedicated of cinephiles and drama junkies would willingly experience the journey again. "Support Our Troops OH! (Black Angels OH!)," the Generation Kill -inspired avant-jazz, spoken-word protest document at the center of Xiu Xiu's Fabulous Muscles is a [...]

For more years than I care to remember, I always said that my ideal night out would be to sit down in a pub alongside Bill Drummond and Tony Wilson and just enjoy the conversation that would inevitably flow. Yes, it was all a pipedream, and indeed it was something that, if it had been allowed to happen, would in all likelihood have been a bit of a disaster given just the psychological make-up of my two heroes. I'm not [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. In her debut collection of short stories, What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us , Laura van den Berg's characters engage the mystical world as they struggle to overcome their personal losses. Publishers Weekly wrote of the book: "In her affecting debut collection, van den Berg taps into her characters' losses with an impressive clarity. Each of these [...]
by chuck bell When a band has been around for over a decade, in most cases, they tend to lose a bit of their inspiration. However, if they have built up enough of a fan base over time, they become more like an institution than a band. Once these acts start to become stale, their members often tend to branch out into side projects, allowing them to explore territories they could not with their primary outfits. Heavens is a rare example of a side project that [...]

Donnie Darko not only was a great movie that earned it a cult following but the soundtrack is wonderfully macabre and morose. It is full of all of the anxiety and tension that holds the film together. It bridges the moments between reality and the alternate. Since the director's cut the full soundtrack was released which includes all of the songs used in the film. This may not be one of the most popular soundtracks but it should be included in the great category. If not just for the reason of the Tears for Fears cover Mad World. This may [...]

With a band name like The Swimmers , you'd expect to hear something lean and crisp, aerodynamic and tight. Retro/1980s pop. And, indeed, that's what you get. People are Soft is coming on November 3, 2009 from the MAD Dragon label, and on the album you'll hear songs that make you think of "Melt With You," John Hughes, and those big-hair-and-makeup years of yore. There's a lot of this kind of keyboard-based flashback music around these days, but what makes The Swimmers different is that it's upbeat. This is not music for depressed [...]

Recipe: How to kill the Joy Division revival Ingredients: (1) Overly dramatic Ian Curtis impersonator (1) Guitar reverb, use same settings on every song (9) Songs filled with maudlin lyrics that don't create any sense of despair Mix and pour into major label corporate mold. Dress in black and let sit, taking caution to avoid any movement that might agitate. Let me preface this with a disclaimer: I loved the first two Editors records. Further, I love the Joy Division/Jesus and Mary Chain revival. Music [...]
