The MTVU Woodie Awards 2009!

The MTVU Woodie Awards 2009! Wednesday night was my third MTVU Woodie Awards show at Roseland Ballroom and one of the most fun! We had a perfect spot near the artist lounge, enjoying a DJ set by Diplo and catching performances by Death Cab for Cutie , Passion Pit , Matt & Kim , The Dead Weather and more. There was an interesting array of presenters including a ranting Zooey Deschanel, legendary Cyndi Lauper and Leighton Meester, Mary Louise Parker, 3OH!3 dressed like Lady Gaga, will.i.am in a snuggie, a drunk? Pete Wentz, and Janelle Monae [...]

2009 mtvU Woodie Awards @ Roseland - pics (Passion Pit, Dead Weather, Matt & Kim, Clipse, Death Cab, more) Indie darlings Matt & Kim kicked off the show -- which celebrates the year's best music as determined by MTVu's college-centric audience -- with an energetic performance of their breakout single "Lessons Learned." Later, the duo returned to accept their Best Video Woodie award. "We've had one heck of a year," said Matt Johnson, before counterpart Kim Schifino leapt into the crowd. Additional performers included veteran alt-rockers Death Cab for Cutie , who rocked the audience with its "New Moon" soundtrack single "Meet Me on the Equinox," as well as [...]

Kite in the Air: Magic Marker EP

After listening to an extraodinarily good new single from San Francisco, California-based music project Kite In the Air for the better part of this past week, we received late word last evening that their sophomore EP, titled Magic Marker, was actually just released... within the past 24 hours! Our original feature of their debut, self-titled EP happened a few short months ago when the weather

New Sia: You GO! Girl

I think I really like this new Sia track. It says: Up With People! From her new album due next year called We Are Born produced by Greg Kurstin. Sort of reminds me of The Weather Girls meets Freeze (A-E-A-E-I-O-U) meets Deborah Harry's This Jam Was Moving. Or whatever that song was called. Bounce to this. You've Changed - Sia

News bits: Monolith, Bonnaroo, Neil Young tribute, Devendra Banhart, free music galore, Dublab

News bits: Monolith, Bonnaroo, Neil Young tribute, Devendra Banhart, free music galore, Dublab Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]

Bob Dylan:: Must Be Santa

Bob Dylan - Must Be Santa
This video for "Must Be Santa" comes from Dylan's 47th album, Christmas In The Heart . Despite its release in mid-October, I have given it a few warm weather spins and each time it just makes me warm and cherry to hear Dylan doing Christmas. All of the artist's U.S. royalties into the future from sales of Christmas In The Heart will be donated to Feeding America. Must Be Santa [...]

Just Me And My Flip: Evidence Live In Chicago

Just Me And My Flip: Evidence Live In Chicago The Fresh Air tour hit the Windy City last night, as Toki Wright, BK One, Evidence, and Brother Ali all performed at the Metro. Evidence took the stage right before Ali and warmed the crowd up just right. His set included songs from The Weatherman LP, The Layover EP, as well as a medley of Dilated Peoples' material. Evidence interacted very well with the crowd, and also performed a new freestyle about "pro" and "con" prefixes. I was in the house to catch some footage. Hit the jump to see Evidence perform "Solitary Confinement", "The Cold Weather Report" and "This [...]

Jack loves Slash.

Jack loves Slash. MTV recently talked to Jack White about his upcoming projects. "I've got like five things on my plate right now, it's a big plate," says White. White has recently recorded sessions with '50s rockabilly pioneer Wanda Jackson, and evidently they're "wild." If you remember, White also collaborated with country legend Loretta Lynn for her album, Van Lear Rose , back in 2004. Talks are evidently also in the works for both a new Dead Weather album and a new White Stripes album. (AHHH!) "It's gonna take as long as it takes ... if [...]

"It often happens that a man is more humanely related to a cat or dog than to any human being."

This has been a week of medical appointments, all follow-ups or scheduled maintenance. I begrudge the time. I know the appointments are necessary to make sure all my parts continue to function, but I hate appointments, the scheduling of time. My day should be leisurely, a chair on the beach with an umbrella drink in my hand sort of day. It is sweat shirt weather: warm, sunny and lovely. Yesterday the two cats, Fern and Maddie, were eleven and today Gracie is four. Lots of special treats for the three of them. I am a pet [...]

In short: Reverb's (Denver Post) John Wenzel interviews Monolith co-creator and festival director, Josh Baker, and fleshes out the situation. Reverb: It may come as no surprise to hear you guys are in rough shape, considering this year's turnout, but I'm guessing most people weren't expecting an appeal for help so soon. Josh Baker: It's been a tough three months for us. What made you decide to send out [...]

Animal Collective - Graze (Fall Be Kind)
The weather's getting cold and An Co is shedding their Summertime Clothes for some winter jackets with a new EP: Fall Be Kind. The band told P4K the track list in October, and hinted toward a winter feel. Also, let it be known that this EP houses the first song to legally sample a Grateful Dead song: "What Would I Want?
