Another year of (mostly) daily tunes here at Doklands, and I have to say I'm still having fun with this. I considered winding this up after hitting 1,000 tracks because really, how much is there left to say? Glad I didn't, though. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin - Modul 38-17 Miriam Makeba - Jol'inkomo Bishop Allen - Psycho Killer Oysterband - Road To Nowhere MGMT - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) Geoffrey Oryema - Listening Wind The Staple Singers - Life During Wartime The Staple Singers - Slippery [...]
Karen O and an evil syndicate known as "The Kids" have prepared a soundtrack for Where the Wild Things Are, which is now streaming over at imeem. I can't speak to how the songs fit with the movie, but there's a lot of shouting and happiness, which I assume matches the tone of the movie (I am a professor of movie soundtracks, so I would know). Go here to get it in your earholes .

I've been a fan of Joe Pernice for quite a little while now, but I'd be the first to admit that my knowledge of him is not as extensive as it could be. For example, I only found out recently that, not only has he been living here in Toronto for several years now, but he's actually been living only a few blocks away from me. A 'few blocks away from me' is also the location of The Dakota Tavern, which apparently is part of the reason why he chose that particular venue for his return to the [...]

I suppose it was sparked by a desire to establish a defensive position; when yet another CD arrived in the mailbox to be added to the thousands already crowding the office-turned-music room, I felt compelled to justify the acquisition. Do I really listen to all of this stuff, or, as I feared, do I limit myself to a spin or two of a new disc before filing it (alphabetically, of course) on the shelf? So, on Aug. 1, I decided to start keeping track of every full album I spun. Because this was my obsession, I made the [...]

I could have sworn I posted this up at some point, but looking back I guess I never did. Bummer. Anyway, I KNOW I've made mention of Johnboy here in the past on the blog talking about their two excellent albums they put out on Trance Syndicate. They were possibly one of the finest noise/math/whatever rock bands around then, but criminally overlooked. Today I am posting up the Austin groups debut 7-inch for your listening pleasure. And a fantastic listen it is, albeit one of the songs ("New Jersey Roadbase") would appear on [...]

Like the Timex Social Club, I spend a lot of time lamenting the rumors that surround me every day. How do they get started? And where do they get crazy? In Truthmonger, I'll try to suss out the kernels of truth in the rumors that are taking up airspace in gossip columns, blogs, and our tips inbox. THE RUMOR: Michael Jackson is alive! OMG, there's blurry cameraphone video proving it ! TRUTH THRESHOLD: Well I mean... the Chicago Tribune is [...]
Those who know me are aware that I am possibly the least athletic person on the planet. This is partly because of physical limitations: I was born with double vision (no Foreigner songs, please), since corrected by surgery, which impeded my ability to catch or throw a ball, frequently a large component of athletic endeavors. Similarly, I was, uh, gifted? cursed? with a relatively, well, stacked bod, and thus running is also more trouble than it's worth for me. And my generation of girls was not expected to be athletic, so there was no pressure on that end, either. [...]

Some great things going on this week. The new releases have been a huge disappointment for the third third week in a row, so I'll come up with something for Wednesday & post the Music News today. P.S. Hoping to do that long rumored Woody Fife interview this week. Getting in touch with him has been a bit of a hassle lately, but here's hoping we can get it done soon. I'd even be open to doing a segment on the New Woody & Rizzuto show at the point in St. Louis. Here's some other Live [...]

Power Pop is a term you hear fairly often when talking about oldies that sort of split the atom between Bubblegum (think The Ohio Express or The 1910 Fruitgum Company), Pop (think Three Dog Night, The Grassroots or The Lovin ' Spoonful) and Rock (think The Doors or Cream). I was reading that Pete Townshend of The Who is generally credited with coining the phrase in 1967 when asked what type of music his band played. Referring to "I Can't Explain, Happy Jack and Pictures of Lily he replied "Power Pop." I never knew this [...]
![CD Review - Patrick Wolf - the Bachelor [Bloody Chamber Music]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1794035_lg.jpg)
This article was written on a train ride from Toronto to Ottawa.. a month ago Ottawa – I am currently on the train to Ottawa, I've just finished season one of True Blood and there isn't enough time to watch a movie. I am kind of luke warm on watching the rest of Eastbound and Down, so I am going to review the Patrick Wolf CD, TRACK BY TRACK . Kriespiel – An instrumental to begin the album, it is filled with sirens, [...]

The second mix of the 2009 summer season. This one was an attempt at mostly gritty, psychedelic sounds, but I made room for the Jean-Paul Sartre Experience who I've been revisiting lately (I guess they're psychedelic), as well as some other things that don't quite fit in the garage . Cover art this week is by Jinners who you may know from Spicy Times or Door Girl Art . There's a hi-res version included if you want to burn a CD and print it out the cover. If you'd like to contribute art to an upcoming [...]

Mid-Week Power Pop Stop / Feedback Fridays / New Music!?! It appears that YOUR NEW FAVORITE SONGS are ten to twenty years old . . . Truth be told, I do feel there is much out there forgotten, or never truly celebrated in the manner deserved. Therefore I have been posting bands and songs to the blog that don't necessarily occupy the space and time we call today. I have been playing around with two themes each week...really, Feedback Fridays is the only theme I have been consistent with. The [...]

You know what makes for a great bong? Combining snakes, skulls and dragons into one smoking device! It's hella cool man, you could stare at it for hours when you're really baked. You know what makes for a great promo photo? Putting a cool bong up front and center with your band all baked on the couch behind it staring at it! Cherubs formed in the rock town of Austin in 1992 and were often labeled as "acid punk," which I think mostly came from their [...]
This past weekend I was sitting down with Obnoxious poet/emcee George Watsky for some dinner. And as he went to the bathroom, I pulled out my iphone and I tweeted to our community, " hangin' with George Watsky and discussing his latest ventures: writing plays, moving to LA for screen writing, and droppin new album this summer. " I put down my iPhone as George came back to the table ( Tweetie is a great iphone app). He caught a glimpse of me typing and asked " texting your girl? ". And I responded, " nah, [...]

This years Winter Music Conference had an array of fresh showcases, featuring the top tier EDM DJs and producers letting you know why they hold their lofty positions. At the FSOB v ViRAM event , a clothing company called Ekonomix was given a great opportunity: they got to design limited edition t-shirts for this event, which were worn by the DJs themselves! This intrigued me, and I got a chance to rap with the Ekonomix Clothing crew about their roots, and how this magnificent feat came about... [...]
