Got all inspired by two recent entries posted during Live Week on Star Maker Machine . Both (check here and here ) featured mighty fine, never officially released live tracks by Neil Young. So I dragged myself upstairs, started rummaging through my collection of Dinosaur Sr. rarities, and here´s some of the treasure I found. These songs may turn up eventually in some future installment of the Archives , but with Neil you just can´t count on anything, ever. In the meantime, make do with this Jurassic ten pack. [...]

Last April — ten editions of The Originals ago — we looked at the first of three batches of originals covered by the Beatles. Here we revisit two tracks each from the debut Please Please Me (Anna, Boys) and 1964's Beatles For Sale (Words Of Love, Mr Moonlight), as well as With The Beatles ' Devil In His Heart. * * * Arthur Alexander – Anna (Go To Him) (1962).mp3 The Beatles [...]

Though not as acclaimed as fellow BBC DJ Mary Anne Hobbs in bass music circles, Giles Peterson's absurdly deep record collection and ability to reconcile a planet's worth of musical styles without falling pray to watered down "worldbeat" has earned him a legion of fans from Madlb to Mala. This week, the later drops by to spin a fantastic mix of unreleased dubs, classic Roots music and a Steve Reich tune he cut to dubplate from CD. All this while discussing airline baggage policies, the smell of acetate, the legendary DMZ paradise loss origin myth and how to [...]

The Velvet Underground - Prominent Men (Demo) [extrait du coffret [...]

Career spanning single CD skims the surface of Elvis' greatness This single CD, issued in celebration of Elvis Presley's 75th birthday anniversary, includes twenty-five tracks selected from the more thorough 4-CD Elvis 75 Good Rockin' Tonight . Much like the box set, this disc covers the length of Elvis' career, including early sides for Sun, incendiary rock 'n' 'roll for RCA, hits from the movies, post-Army comebacks, gospel, late-60s Memphis gems, live performances and later studio work from 1972. Unlike the box set, you'll miss his pre-Sun acetate and [...]

Okay, this is yet another self-indulgent childhood story, but I hope you'll stick with me even though I've told a version of it before. Trust me -- there's a couple of audio kickers at the end that will make it worth your while. So, as I've mentioned on a previous occasion or two, I was one of the gazillion kids back in the mid-Sixties who took a gawk at The Beatles on TV and thought, hey, that looks like fun. Unlike most of them, however, I was lucky enough to be in a garage band (we were called [...]

As I was walking by the university library on my way to lunch today the automatic door slid open, temporarily smothering me in luscious air condition and that particular smell of library. I stopped in my tracks, caught in a Proustian flashback. I've always been most comfortable in libraries. In Junior High school, my best friend and I used to head to our small town public 'library' after school for a couple of hours until our parents finished at work. The Columbia County Public Library wasn't a great one, wasn't even a good one - but it was cool in the [...]
The Record (Hackensack N.J.) (MCT) -- GARFIELD, N.J. - Looking for that hard-to-find song made before a performer became big? Chances are it's among the hundreds of thousands of vinyl records swelling the shelves, stacks and boxes in Charlie Rigolosi's store. The 83-year-old music collector has run Platter World since 1975, selling used records that are usually out of print, such as an original, 7-inch acetate recording from the 1960s of Jimi Hendrix's guitar work on "As the Clouds Drift By,"...

The Tow Me Away ad, possibly my favorite commercial ever, ran for two years in a row (1997 being one of them), courtesy of BP. I don't remember whether 1997 was the first or second year, but it did run for two. BP's current ads (with "real" people blathering on about alternative energy, which somehow includes oil!) are among the most annoying ever aired. Santa Claus Is Flying Through the Sky appeared on both the Tops and Treasure Chest labels, and probably others. Memory fails me right now. (Good thing I'm not a [...]
That right there is the man himself's first listen to The Brutalist Bricks, a record we are very much looking forward to and are happy to see even now exists in a kind of physical form. [@tedleo] ... Continue reading "Good Morning, Ted Leo's Brutalist Bricks Acetate" >

The London Times called composer Terry Riley one of the makers of the 20th century, and if that makes his music as important as rocket engines, transistors and acetate safety film, then they are completely correct. His long-form synthesizer pieces inspired pop musicians (like the Who, who named half a song after him) and his discography documents liberation through the pursuit of infinity. He will open the West Coast Left Coast festival this Saturday. This interview by Dan Collins.

Man, we've got a great night of music planned for you on Tuesday, but first some background: Motown had one, so did Stax. Three deep soul acts and one smoking hot band to back them up. The triple-header of R&B: the soul revue. Once a mainstay of theaters, gymnasiums and VFW halls everywhere, the soul revue ultimately vanished in the late seventies as recorded sound pushed live performance out of the limelight and onto car stereos and refrigerator-sized boom boxes. The performers returned to their day [...]
