Accorging to Public Policy Polling, 52% of Republicans think ACORN stole the 2008 Presidential Election for President Barack Obama . Here's why Republicans might come to believe such an absurdity. Poll . More . More .

No I'm not stalking Rural Alberta Advantage 's Amy Cole as much as the above photo may seem - it was just the best photo I could capture having arrived a little late for the band's intimate instore performance at Soundscapes in Toronto this past Tuesday. 'Intimate' is the key word as the band opted for a more subdued performance than their usual live show as will likely be on display when they play a sold-out show at Lee's Palace tomorrow night. It was very much a bedroom performance as if they were trying not to disturb the [...]
To celebrate its seventh birthday, Paper Bag Records has combined two of our favorite things in music: covers and free stuff. The Seven Year Itch, as Stereogum reports, is a new compilation of cover songs performed by twelve of label's artists, and can be obtained right this very second for free. Just click here . Launched in 2002, Paper Bag Records has emerged as one of he premier indie labels, and for good reason. In its first year, the label released the critically acclaimed You Forgot It In People [...]

Two of the best shows MOKB Presents has ever hosted have involved Paper Bag Records bands. Woodhands , of course, brings the crowd and the party every time we bring them back to Indianapolis, but the most criminally underattended show we've ever hosted was for The Acorn . Of course all this was before Kanye West proclaimed their greatness on his blog . Paper Bag is now releasing a [...]
I played road hockey and pulled a bunch of muscles in my legs. I saw 2012 and wondered why John Cusack is an action hero and why these days in disaster movies, the single father is the new hero? Really enjoyed My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding . Running in Toronto until Dec. 13th, maybe longer. Saw Band Of Skulls at the El Mocambo. Amazing concert. After a couple attempts at seeing them live, I finally made it and subsequently rediscovered songs like Impossible and [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , You Oughta Know , Canada Ohbijou has no time for Toronto-haters. We're in love with the city and we carry it on our sleeves everywhere we go," lead singer Casey Mecija gushes to Spinner. "There's something so exciting about living here -- how big it is, how diverse the population is. Toronto will always have its sad aspects, but it's a thriving city and there's so much to learn from it." [...]

In 2002, Toronto's Paper Bag Records had an auspicious first year by releasing a new millennial indie rock touchstone in Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People , one of the decade's most acclaimed albums, and one that helped shape thoughts and expectations of what indie rock could look and sound like in the '00s: sentimental and anthemic but still rooted in the raucous guitar rock of the '90s, all while featuring more members than an intramural softball team. Years later, the label still earns plaudits for curating a solid roster -- most recently given [...]
![Shufflin Cross Country, Day 1 Mix [SFO to SLC]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2125958_lg.jpg)
Day 1 is complete. Here are the songs the popped up on the iPod on Day 1 of my cross country move (while I was tracking them). This is also why I love using shuffle. I wouldn't have picked out most of these if I were building a playlist from scratch. Wilco - Monday Stephen Malkmus - Gardenia Marah - Wild West Love Song Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers Gogol Bordello - Immigrant Punk Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone The Beatles - Don't Ever Change Alela Diane - White As Diamonds [...]
Bella Union is preparing for a bumper 2010, with new albums due in Q1 from Laura Veirs, Lawrence Arabia, Midlake, Beach House, The Acorn, The Kissaway Trail, and Abe Vigoda. The label's recent signees include Lone Wolf, I Break Horses, John Grant with Midlake, and Simon's own new band, Snowbird (where does he find the time!). Many Bella Union artists also have US labels, so it isn't always possible to host every band on the roster but their SXSW 2010 schedule is starting to look pretty exciting! ( more details )
It really is all about sticking it to Obama and the Dems. From Kevin Drum : Congress gave final approval Thursday for an additional $24 billion to help the jobless and support the housing market as climbing unemployment poses a growing liability for elected officials. The bill, passed overwhelmingly by the House and headed to President Obama for his signature Friday, extends unemployment insurance benefits that were due to expire and renews an $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers, while also expanding it to cover many other home purchases. And [...]
Walked out after Antichrist too (shocked? disturbed? apathetic?) numbed to sort the things I liked (there were some of those!) from those I didn't. Perhaps that was Big Lars' desired effect. Before the movie entered its nastiest stretch, I could sigh or laugh away its bad parts. Like the Fantastic Mr. Fox cameo, the relentless acorn hail, or the glorious slo-slo-mo shot of the undulous nutsack. (Non-diagetic insert shot committee, holla.) Even when the ugly stuff first started -- no spoilers! -- what popped into my head was this... [...]

LAKE - There's no shortage of boy/girl indie-pop bands. In fact, there's been such a saturation that recently that description is more likely to make me wary than excited. Still, some groups manage to rise above what have now become cliched aspects of a somewhat tired genre - LAKE is one of those bands. Led by singer/songwriters Eli Moore and Ashley Eriksson, LAKE has released a stunning new album entitled Let's Build a Roof , a sophisticated - yet melodic - set of intriguing pop songs. The tracks utilize various instrumental approaches while Moore and [...]

I had an amazing time this past weekend at the Halifax Pop Explosion . Highlights included: - The Acorn at St. Matthews Church. Amazing acoustics. Great songs, harmonies, deep rumbling percussion and carefully crafted in-between song banter. - The Danks at The Coconut Grove. First time seeing this band. Love Brohan Moore's impression of Kelly Jones ( Stereophonics ) fronting The Strokes . -My panel and demo discussion seemed to go well. Hopefully I was able to give some people some ideas or guidance. -I stayed at the [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Live It Out , Canada Decorum went out the window at St. Matthew's United Church as the crowd erupted at the appearance of Ottawa's the Acorn , clapping, stomping and hollering for the sprawling, adventuresome folk-rock band's first performance in Halifax in three years. Singer-guitarist Rolf Klausener, who could've entertained the house with his chatter and quips without playing a note, decided spur of the moment to reveal their long absence from the city in a "continuing story" between songs, [...]

Now that I've got a little more time on my hands I think I'm going to start up this " Exchanging e-mails with... " segment again. It's been really interesting getting some insight from different bands/artists and figuring out what their life with music is like: what their goals are, their motivation, what tours are like, etc.. Hopefully it's an interesting read, but, if not, I think it makes me a slightly better (sort of) music blogger... This time around I bounced some electronic mails back and forth with Ottawa singer-songwriter That's the Spirit ( [...]

E invece no! L'estro, la 'schizofrenia musicale', quei ritmi folk partoriti da menti indubbiamente dotate di molta creatività che caratterizzano "Visiter", [...]
Rookie Senator Al Franken's first piece of legislation was an amendment to a defense spending bill that withholds government contracts from organizations that don't let their employees take rape and sexual assualt cases to court. Basically, if your company contractually disallows raped employees from pressing charges or suing, you can't get a government contract. With all the forced conservative hysteria over groups like ACORN, it must have been easy for folks to miss the case Halliburton/KBR employee Jamie Liegh Jones. In 2005, Jamie Leigh Jones was gang-raped by her co-workers while [...]

[photo courtesy of David Wells ] The Dodos are currently on an extensive tour in support of their new CD Time to Die . On Tuesday at Music Hall , the trio performed a set consisting primarily of the new album (all but one of the songs were played) in their inimitable hyper-percussive style. Meric Long's light-speed strumming and fingerpicking guitar work provides the bulk of the melodic structure, but the band's style is driven by the omnipresent drums of Logan Kroeber. The addition of multi-instrumentalist Keaton Snyder on [...]
