With the release of major-label debut What Will We Be (Warner Bros.), Devendra Banhart proves once again he has the potential to be one of his generation's major players. His voice, with its careening vibrato and fuse-blowing intensity, sounds something like Marc Bolan's, but his repertoire may be more all over the map than anyone [...]

I' m bewitched, bothered and bewildered, with a very strong emphasis on bewildered . I feel so out of the loop. I'm looking at Billboard 's new Hot 100 and wondering, where did the superstars go? Suddenly, the charts are dominated by total strangers? Most of the Top 10 songs are by acts no one had heard of a few months ago: Owl City (above, second, No. 2), Jason DeRulo (above, top, No. 3), Iyaz (No. 4), Jay Sean (No. 7) and Ke$ha (above, third, No. 10). Lady Gaga (No. 9), Lady Antebellum (No. 5, no relation) and [...]

Toronto - Before they were known as "Johnny Marr's latest band", the Cribs just had put out a few decent albums full of big gang choruses over a friendly college rock-esque vibe. I really enjoyed their self titled debut album, which was full of strong songs such as "Baby Don't Sweat", "Learning How To Fight" and this song. The band has since put out albums out at a very workman like pace, including 2005's The New Fellas , 2007's Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever and this year's Ignore the Ignorant, which has been garnering very [...]

The Von Bondies opened both nights. Thursday the Cribs also played The Late Show with David Letterman, performing "We are the Same Skies" from their [...]

Freshman year at NYU I was introduced to a lot of random indie bands by all my new artsy schoolmates from around the world. A few new bands I was introduced to in 2001 included The Strokes, Jack Johnson, and Death Cab For Cuite. But out of all the crazy music I discovered freshman year, Moldy Peaches defiintely stuck with me the most. They got extra famous after their songs were used throughout Juno , but their wild live shows is what really makes them special. Lead singer Kimya Dawson used to dress up as a bunny and her [...]

Andrew Bird is keeping busy, or so reports the BBC 6. All whilst on a lengthy tour, Bird is finding time to score a film, create an art installation, and cover Kermit the Frog's "It's Not Easy Being Green." The film in question is titled Norman. It's a high school drama starring Adam Goldberg and is the first legit full-length feature Bird has scored. The art project is harder to explain. According to Bird, "I've been collaborating with this sculptor in Chicago who makes these horns that I play through - they are like speakers - to create [...]
Last year, the Chicago based music venue as Schubas brought the likes of Cursive, Department of Eagles, Bishop Allen, and Bear Hands for its annual five-day winter celebration/music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows . We were there and wrote a lot about it . Anyhow, for its 2010 edition, Schubas, now with their new venue, Lincoln Hall, available to provide some extra space, has taken TNK up a notch. After all, include to take part in this year's festivities, which takes place from January 13-17 at both Schubas and Lincoln Hall, are The Cribs, Voxtrot, Final Fantasy, [...]

Pat Graham Yeah, I know that I probably keep closer track of British bands than some (but certainly not as much as others), but I still get confused as to who's who sometimes. Particularly when it comes to outfits comprised of skinny, shaggy-looking lads wielding guitars and perhaps scowls, and whose names are some combination of the definite article and a random noun, sometimes pluralized. The Rifles ? They're the ones who're trying to channel The Jam (and doing a pretty good job of it). The Rakes ? They're [...]

Considering the last time I heard from Adam Green he was issuing the advice that there is in fact not a wrong way to have intercourse with a girl who has no legs, his latest endeavor is a bit presents a bit of pleasant shock. Those who listen to his newest single "What Makes Him Act So Bad" waiting for the misogyny or punchlines will be sorely disappointed. Instead, what is somewhat shocking is just how good of a singer/songwriter Green can be when he really puts his mind to it. While previous Adam Green solo efforts were [...]

Hellz and Mosley Tribes have teamed up to design two limited colourways of the Chambers sunglasses. One has a black frame with a red interior and grey gradient lenses, while the other is a tortoise frame with a jade green interior and spice brown gradient lenses. Each frame features a gold metal plaque on the inside as well as the Hellz familiar cracked bottle metal plaque at the end of the left temple. [...]

Last night, PBS/Independent Lens presented D Tour , a documentary about Pat Spurgeon from Rogue Wave. He was born with only one kidney, and was lucky enough to get a kidney transplant only to have it fail as well. The doc focuses on his struggles to live the life of a touring drummer, all while administering dialysis to himself twice a day while on the road, not to mention his search for a new kidney donor. I learned about this doc through Adam from Beggar's Banquet, as he's friends with Pat and helped produce the documentary. Tying [...]

And so today brings the final nominees list for the People's Choice Awards , a roundup of the some of the less-challenging artists and material from the past year or so. And— yippee! —this was the first year that "we, the people" were allowed to have somewhat of a say in the nominees. But despite this privilege, snubs still abound in the music categories. 1. Favorite Male Artist: Eminem, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw To be fair, the choices for the "male artist" category always [...]

It is getting to be that time of year again. Award shows will recycle and Ryan Seacrest (the most famousest of hobbits) is restocking his supply of root lifter in preparation for red carpet coverage. Vampires dominated the ballots as "Twilight" and "True Blood" reigned supreme. The cast of Twilight were also named in different categories highlighting Taylor Lautner as a contender for Break Out Star of the Year. You can vote on all the categories at the People Choice Awards site . [...]

"HAPPY F*IN' HALLOWEEN, JUGGALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!!!!!" This low, bellowing voice was the greeting of a big bald dude in the middle of a wrestling ring with "Hallowicked" painted on the side of it. The packed hive of demented clown people cheered back. If my 5 hour perspective on Detroit is accurate (and I'm hoping it's not), the population of Detroit is distributed roughly: 0.5 parts hipster; 3 parts panhandler; and 1209812091724019842 parts Juggalo. I've never played a show with a paper thin wall separating me from an Insane Clown Posse after party on Halloween (complete with wrestling ring [...]
