Click here to view the embedded video. Let's not forget that Columbus' Happy Chichester is one of the openers for Friday's RJD2/Donewaiting.com 7-year Anniversary show. If you're not hip to Happy (for shame!), he was in Columbus rock/funk act Royal Crescent Mob in the '80s and early '90s, fronted Howlin' Maggie til around 2002, was an original member of The Twilight Singers and also played often with Greg Dulli in The Afghan Whigs. So the dude has a pedigree. Happy does the solo thing now. His [...]

Here's my ultimate music festival and it would be either on a remote island, or at Golden Gate Park in August. There are old and new, alive and dead, and everything in between, so I can only dream. Oh yeah, there would only be 500 people because that way I am less likely to be standing next to the drunk girl that keeps talking, the guy with his shirt off pointing his index finger randomly in the air, or the couple that just ate some chocolates and laughs at everything slow and dark. I am truly excited about [...]

words & photos by Dominick Mastrangelo Given that most of their gear was already on the stage, one would have thought the interim between opener James Dean Wells (of the Gay Blades) and headliner The Heavy on Saturday (1/16) would have been rather brief. The whirring of noise that begins "If I Were Going" from the Afghan Whigs classic "Gentlemen" came on the 92Y Tribeca loudspeakers and, despite a solid set, Wells had done little [...]
It's always hard to write about those you know, but despite knowing far too much about the members of Diehard, it's difficult to not let the edges of a smile cross my face each time I hear them. Awash in a flash of flannel and more than a touch of cardigan, their male/female indie pop recalls an era's worth of 90's stalwarts like wrapping your arms around old friends. Plowing through shared loves of Afghan Whigs and Superchunk and cascading like the first rising waves of unrequited crush; their EP Oh So Premiere is a sincere return [...]
Jack Endino made his name as one of the go-to producers in the Pacific northwest. He's worked with the likes of Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Hot Hot Heat, Soundgarden, The Afghan Whigs, L7, and Zeke. His most famous work however, remains Nirvana's debut Bleach. On February 2nd Endino returns with Fell for the Gift, the debut from his own band Kandi Coded. The music has a metallic edge with a

Ragged and moody singer-songwriter Americana Nathan Holscher is proof that you needn't be in Nashville or Austin to produce Americana. Holscher grew up and was schooled in the Midwest, and after bouncing around the Southwest ended up in Cincinnati, a city long ago known for the hillbilly records issued on the King label. Roy Rogers was born in Cincinnati, and Pure Prairie League formed in Columbus, but more recently the Queen City has turned out soul acts such as Bootsy Collins, the Isley Brothers and Afghan Whigs, and garage/indie rock from the Greenhornes and [...]
The 10 songs that played when I pressed random on my iPhone 01. Smog - All thoughts are prey to some beast (from the fantastic "Sometimes I wish we were an eagle" ) 02. Super Furry Animals - The piccolo snare (From the excellent "Phantom power" ) 03. The Afghan Whigs - Crazy (From the mindblowingly brilliant "1965" ) 04. Superchunk - Tie a rope to the end [...]
Off to see some rock, kids and yes it is like 2 degrees outside. All the more reason to rock harder to shake off the cold AND TTs now serves hot booze infused cider so that helps as well! First band up was local four-piece The Painted Lights . I had the pleasure of catching the last few songs of their set. They kind of reminded me of some parts Afghan Whigs, some parts Sheila Devine, which is never a bad thing. The band came together to create a tight emotional cadence. The [...]

Oooh, apologies for my completely unexplained absence from this organ last week. A variety of continuous, unlikely emergencies conspired to keep me away from my precious keyboard and monitor on Sunday, eventually culminating in an exciting race through Dublin to find a kind of precious anklet. Either that, or I was pathetically tired from working all week, and that anklet story was actually just an elaborate dream I had. I really don't remember, and frankly, you don't care. Either way, to make up for it, myself and my comrade-in-blogs David "Coyote Trax" Kirk only went and recorded a podcast, which [...]
Here's the next installment of my favorite albums of the decade. Sorry for the lengthy delay between the first two posts and this one - holidays, job interviews, blah blah blah. Anyway, expect the final 10 sometime between now and January. #20: The Hold Steady , Separation Sunday (2005) I love The Hold Steady, [...]

Recently the city of Cincinnati, Ohio erected a plaque at 811 Race Street to commemorate the former site of Herzog Studios where the great Hank Williams recorded his first mega-hit "Lovesick Blues" in December 1948. At the time of his first recording session in Cincinnati, Hank had already enjoyed some success in the field of Country music. But it was "Lovesick Blues" that would catapult him to super-stardom. Several other tunes were recorded at that legendary first session and Hank returned to Herzog Studio in 1949 to record many more including the classic "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". [...]

I've experienced some great connections with amazing albums during periods of my life when those songs or records connected in ways that only, as a true music fan can relate, make perfect sense. It's a pretty snobbish statement for sure, as I'm sure that plenty of music fans connect on their own personal level with many a song and album for sure. The Afghan Whigs were a band that were as talented as many of their counterparts during the early 90's, but never did receive the recognition that they really did deserve. Maybe because the material was too [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Finch is the third book in Jeff VanderMeer's Ambergris Cycle, and also the third book in the series to inspire its own soundtrack (by Murder By Death ). With Finch , Jeff VanderMeer has created a richly populated world with speculative fiction imbibed with impressive detective noir storytelling. Paul Tremblay wrote of the book: "Told in a [...]
