Fight Amp - Manners and Praise

Fight Amp - Manners and Praise Fight Amp has slipped by a large portion of the metal populace. It might be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, as there is no shortage of Amphetamine Reptile-worshipping bands now. But while peers like Engineer, Black Cobra, and Akimbo enjoy bigger exposure, Fight Amp has come up with Manners and Praise ( Translation Loss , 2009), an album that's way ahead of the competition. Bitter Son School This sophomore release explores noise rock much further than previous full-length Hungry for [...]

The Giant Panther Does Requests! - Kim Mitchell

The Giant Panther Does Requests! - Kim Mitchell I just learned something right here, right now...I mentioned Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell in my last post and somebody, anonymously, asked me to post the songs I made reference to. Never a problem as we aim to please at The Giant Panther, so I figured I better bone up on Kim before I speak out of turn. I did some checking and it turns out Kim Mitchell was the lead singer of a band called Max Webster. Why is this important? Well it's probably not to any of you, but for me Max Webster was the first band I ever [...]

The newest from SF metal band Kowloon Walled City

The newest from SF metal band Kowloon Walled City Kowloon Walled City 's new record is called Gambling on the Richter Scale , which is both a homage to their San Francisco roots and an introduction to their sound. Taking a page from bands like Unsane and local heroes Neurosis , the quartet specializes in mammoth, down-tuned riffs - slabs of tectonic impact that seem summoned from the San Andreas fault itself. Built around bassist Ian Miller's monstrous tone and the sheer amperage marshaled by guitarists Scott Evans and Jason Pace, the band is undergirded by Jeff Fagundes' heavy-handed drumming and brought [...]

ROCK for KARP!

Kill All Redneck Pricks: KARP LIVES! 1990-1998
For the most part I wasn't a huge fan of the '90s Olympia music scene. Most of the Kill Rock Stars, K Records and Yo Yo bands were too pop or arty for my tastes. And I kinda think the Olympia scene wasn't a big fan of 10 Things either, because we focused our coverage on heavier and harder punk and rock. But, there are always exceptions, bands we liked and covered, and we always dropped a few hundred issues around town hoping to appeal to Olympia kids into heavier music. While the Oly bands I personally dug were few, [...]

Last Week's Sauce October 4th - 10th

Blues Traveler with Jamie McLean playing Mullin It Over
Last Week's Sauce is a recurring column featuring recordings of shows from the previous week. Thanks to tgaikdis for this week's photo. This week I wanted to add a theme to the selections as I did when we did an All-Bonnaroo edition . Last week ScottyB ran a great list of touring jambands that didn't make it out of the 2000's . The five groups featured in this piece are jambands that are indeed going to make it as touring bands carrying their respective ensembles into 2010 and hopefully [...]

The Reinvention of Hot Buttered Rum

The Reinvention of Hot Buttered Rum For a band to last the better part of a decade represents a momentous feat. To put it in perspective, think about where you were in your life about eight years ago. Unless you are Wooderson from Dazed and Confused, odds are things looked a lot different back then than they do today. For a band like Hot Buttered Rum to push on through for eight more years, it is only natural that they would feel the need to shift things up to keep it fresh. [...]

Celebrating Madonna

Celebrating Madonna 10 Thoughts About Madonna's new Hits Collection 1 Best image in the booklet (2-disc version only; 1 disc = useless!): shown above 2 Wonkiest lyric: From What It Feels Like For A Girl: "Hands that rest on jutting hips, repenting." No Madonna, the image of hands on hips - arms akimbo? - suggests defiance, not repentance. 3 Sharpest lyric: From Don't Tell Me: " [...]

Bumbershoot Day 1: Made of Win

Bumbershoot's first day is in the books, and it couldn't have gone smoother. Weather threatened to dampen the day, with downpours through the morning, but as the gates opened, the clouds stayed at bay until well after De La Soul played their final note. Here's a few photos and brief review of each performance I managed to take in. Akimbo @ EMPSFM's Sky Church stage My day started late, but I made sure to get in for Seattle's hardcore superstars, and to bring my ear plugs. The riffs were loud [...]

Bumbershoot This Weekend

Bumbershoot , Seattle's Annual Music and Arts Festival starts tomorrow ( Sep 5 ) and continues throughout the Labor Day weekend. Music critic in-residence Drake LeLane will be on the scene at Seattle Center this weekend reporting on all the comings and goings at the festival. In Bumbershoot news, Youngershoot , three days full of "kid-specific and family-friendly activities", makes it inaugural bow at this year's festival. (Ironically, Drake will be attending Bumber "kid free" this year, so I guess we'll have to hear his first hand reviews of Spin The Bottle Jr. [...]

Final Judgement

Final Judgement Accused of being a "black-caped, black-garbed, death-worshipping church" with ranks of mindless "hooded snuffoids," they believed they were visionaries warning of the coming apocalypse. In the wake of the shootings at Columbine and with cult activity on the increase, this could have been ripped from the mainstream headlines throughout 1999. But at the end of the hippie dream, these were the charges levelled at one of the most controversial cults of the Sixties: the Process Church. In 1963, two people met at the L Ron Hubbard Institute of Scientology on Fitzroy Street, London. They were both studying [...]

REVIEWED: Fruit Bats

REVIEWED: Fruit Bats Fruit Bats The Ruminant Band ( Sub Pop ) Similar Sounds: The Shins, Apples in Stereo, Beulah File Under: unapologetic pop rock Four long years have passed since Eric Johnson has donned the Fruit Bats moniker with a ragged band of melodymakers, ready to tug at another stitch in the fragile tapestry of pop time continuum. Perhaps the immediate indie success and subsequent gawkers from Echolocation and the fallout of less than celebrated yet equally gifted albums Mouthfuls [...]

CHBP: Saturday Street Beat

CHBP: Saturday Street Beat Figuring the confines of Neumos would give us a break from the sun, the first band we went to check out on Saturday was local new wave quartet Hotels . From what I'd heard previously, I expected to really enjoy their set, and for the first few songs I did ("Port of Saints", "Near the Desert, Near the City"). But as the songs continued, I found myself with more criticisms than accolades (case in point: a track that sounded like an intentionally-lost Allman Brothers jam (whaa?) and the unfortunate gold-plated "hotel" name [...]
