[image by Songbirdnest ] We have taped so many shows in the last two months that the backlog of recordings is approaching 30 different sets. There are still CMJ shows that have not been posted! That being said, we will continue to be very active during the Winter, recording a large variety of artists. If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you're promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve [...]

To me, Tom Waits is the antithesis of The Beach Boys, and I can't stand The Beach Boys. I've been fascinated with Waits ever since stumbling upon an appearance he made on the Dinah Shore Show in the mid to late seventies, and that was one hell of an exciting stumble. I guess that's why I might envy youth, not for their age, but for having so much ahead of them, something like the discovery of Tom Waits, or Bob Dylan. I [...]
Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free is not only the name of Akron/Family 's most recent studio release, but also a good way of describing the band's 2009 as a whole. After all, the New York City outfit did spend a good part of the year supporting the album by hitting the road. That's as wild and free as you can these days. Anyhow, come February, Akron/Family will look to continue this trend when they embark on a 12-date, mostly Southern U.S. tour. Also worth noting is the fact that the group [...]

The savory indie-pop goodness of Rogue Wave have announced that they will have a new album called Permalight coming out March 2, 2010 and they have announced some new tour dates in support of said album, including a stop here at the Loft in Dallas. I have caught these guys 3 times before and while they certainly fall into the easy-going indie-pop category, they have some damn good songs and some very hook-y hooks that you can't deny. Full list of dates after the jump [via Pitchfork ]. Rogue [...]

Minneapolis rockers Motion City Soundtrack have a new album called "My Dinosaur Life" coming out on January 19th, 2010 and they have announced a bunch of new headlinin' tour dates coming up in support and furtherance of said new record, which also happens to be their major label debut. The great Akron/Family has announced some tour dates coming up in February 2010, including a stop here in Dallas playing the Granada on February 25th. I thought we might have caught these guys at SXSW but I don't think we did, but though I don't know a ton about them and haven't seen them, what I've heard I've liked and this should be a good one to check out. Full dates after the jump. Akron/Family 2010 Tour Dates: 2/17/2010 Greensboro, NC – Artiska Cafe 2/18/2010 Athens, [...]

Rolling into shows in full pre-game mode has its benefits, particularly when artists exceed lofty expectations and melt faces. Full disclosure, I'm not a big live review blogger, and toss the blue-ribbon to my colleagues Brian, Justin, and James in this arena. I'm much to erratic cognitively during live performances and my mind can just as easily wander as it can become rapt. I usually begin concerts in full journalist mode, jotting down tracklists and attempting to evaluate the entire scene throughout the night. This quickly digresses when alcohol's involved, and it fails doubly hard when the band I'm evaluating [...]

The Dead Oceans-signed Akron/Family have taken it upon themselves to reveal a 2010 US tour set for February and early-March of next year. Still riding high on the wave of hype that their newest 2009 record Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free brought to the collective, they now look set to continue their domination of the underground music scene with twelve 2010 dates in all.

Akron/Family - The United States of Blibble The pastiche of the US flag on the cover is apt, for their latest Akron/Family have surpassed their own eclectic standard by tipping every aspect of US rock and folk music in a blender with a large measure of thoroughly unfashionable enthusiasm. So you've got Minutemen bass, bucolic flutes and strings, the urgent chorus from a lost 70s musical and smooth sax - the sound [...]

Akron/Family [ MySpace ] are hitting the road and will bring their rad-tastic live show to the Southern US this Winter. If you're a Southern-based RE reader ( basically, I think that's just some nice people I know from Orlando - hi ladies! ), you really should do whatever you can to check these guys out live. I wouldn't call the moment transcendent, but it's really damn good. Their latest album, Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free , should be among many fellow bloggers favorite albums of 2009 and represents the sound of Akron/Family [...]

Akron/Family just announced an early 2010 run of the South with a band I'm fully unfamiliar with - Warpaint . Not that I'm totally versed in all things Akron/Family either, but their face-melting set at this year's Outside Lands was the first thing I saw of the weekend. I've been a fan ever since.
