Things will be quiet here at BL&L for the next couple of days as we're leaving today for New Orleans to cover the 2009 Voodoo Experience Festival . This will mark my first time going to NOLA so I'm over the moon excited. I'm also shooting the Fest-which will make me the only sober person there (heh). Given the vast amount of great acts performing ( Flaming Lips, Silversun Pickups, Drive-By Truckers, Mates of State, The Pogues, The Meat Puppets, tons of local acts ), plus the amazing scenery that is just NOLA itself, I may come back with [...]
Between his top-notch previous albums and his work with other artists, Chuck Prophet had already developed a superior artistic cache before Let Freedom Ring , but this is hands down his best work. Thinking inside the box has never been Chuck Prophet's strongest point, and that's a good thing. The last few years have found Prophet hipping the traditional-leaning Kelly Willis on tunes by Adam Green and Iggy Pop, and adding some razor sharp bite to Alejandro Escovedo's latter-day career revival. Prophet's latest release, Let Freedom Ring, is a bit of a mixture of Willis' Translated from Love [...]

Don't forget the Kristofferson Kontest ... I'll draw the winner tonight after work. Now... a couple of quick hitters to clear a few tracks out of my "to blog" file. First up is the upcoming release from rocker Chuck Prophet. Let Freedom Ring! is set for release October 27th from Yep Roc records, and promises to deliver the same style of genre-bending rock that made me such a big fan of his 2007 release Soap & Water . It's the [...]

It's always fascinated me how, as social animals who can both project future possibilities and mutate our environment to our benefit, we're nonetheless driven to make peace with our own foibles, accommodate small stumbling blocks, and work around difficulties otherwise solvable and surmountable. A case in point: the 9 key on my laptop keyboard has been broken since last winter, and - as removing the key cap to clean underneath it proved ineffective - I have been forced to conclude that there is something electronically awry here, somewhere in the circuitry. [...]

I have been remiss about getting this interview with Steve Wynn posted because I've been doing things like... traveling to see Steve Wynn. So, I'll wrap a review of Wynn's recent Baseball Project show in Chicago in with this short Q&A about his new self-released CD, Steve Sings Bob . First up, the Baseball Project. The show was a triple bill, with the BP, the Steve Wynn IV and the Minus 5. However, it was all the same band, with Wynn on guitar and vox, Scott McCaughey also on guitar and vocals, Peter [...]
