Some bands entirely define their time, however brief their reign or their time may be. De La Soul was one such band, and Three Feet High And Rising is so 1989 the CD may as well be sold in a day-glo hi-top trainer. The logical culmination of a decade of hip-hop, sampling and E-fuelled peace 'n' love, the album, the band and the times are neatly encapsulated in one album. As soon as their own brilliance put a legal stop to their sample-snaffling practices, audiences' attention wandered. How many other De La Soul albums [...]

Pavla Kopecna All throughout Theoretical Girl's set at SxSW back in March , I was wracking my brain trying to figure out who Amy Turnnidge, she who is the central abstract idea of the band, reminded me of. This didn't keep me from enjoying her set, but it was a relief and head slap when I finally put it together a week or two later - the name I'd been trying to dig out of my memory banks was Sarah Blackwood. Not the icy electro-pop queen she now is with Client , [...]

Kitsuné is probably one of the sickest labels around. From music to clothing to design, they've got a number of things on lock. I've only been following the label since the 6th compilation, so I might not have the history as some of you, but in my opinion this 8th compilation is the bees mf knees . The Kitsuné Maison Compilation 8 dropped digitally out in Europe yesterday (November 16) and is now available for everyone else here . The comp offers up a ton of good tunes from [...]

Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. If you're into buzz bands you might want to check out Drums tonight, The Big Pink on Wednesday, Tape Deck Mountain on Thursday, Neon Indian on Friday and The XX on Saturday. Some of those will be good, but I'm recommending a variety of [...]

Photo by Alexandra Serio ISLANDS played a great show at NYC's Bowery Ballroom this past Thursday replete with rhinestone-studded wardrobe and the cheeky showmanship that we have come to expect from Nick Thorburn. The former Unicorns front man strut around stage in a make-shift striptease of sorts disrobing systematically from an outfit that looked like the bastard love child of Elvis and Ziggy Stardust. Evan and Geordie Gordon, both very capable musicians, filled out the band's [...]

We just got news about a benefit, at which Juan MacLean will DJ, to take place in San Francisco in tribute to Jerry Fuchs. Jerry, the drummer for !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Maserati , LCD Soundsystem and The Juan MacLean to name just a few, died tragically last week at the age of 34. I'm pasting this straight from the press release. Juan MacLean will DJ a benefit show in memory and in tribute to friend, band mate and legendary drummer Jerry Fuchs, who passed [...]

Barenaked Ladies: Brian Wilson [ purchase ] From 1992's Gordon, Canadian musical group Barenaked Ladies tells the story of a man whose life parallels that of Beach Boys member Brian Wilson , referencing his diagnosis of mental illness via the mention of psychologist Dr. Eugene Landy, as well as Wilson's weight gain during that time - I never fail to be touched by the wry use of the "fun, fun, fun" lyric... An interesting factoid I learned from Wikipedia: "Brian Wilson rearranged and sang this song a [...]

The White Rabbits have been laying tracks all over the US this fall and Glass Ghost has been priming the audiences along the way. So, after spending all that time together, it isn't surprising that when asked what band deserved more praise, love and attention they pointed in Glass Ghost's direction. They just released the fantastically surreal Idol Omen which plays like a trippy spin through vividly crisp fall day in a big city. The influences are many, coming from Eliot and Mike's previous dalliances in the funk, hip-hop, jazz and rock worlds. While the tracks [...]

Interesting project! Check the plug: " In 2007, we fell in love with all things American Gangster: Ridley Scott's Oscar nominated film, its soundtrack, and Jay-Z 's critically acclaimed album of the same name. Like all true Hov fans, we memorized every word of Jay's vividly weaved tale of a hustler's rise from the streets and his addiction to the lavish lifestyle accompanying his atypical success. What was unique about our American Gangster experience were the unmistakable parallels we observed between the men Jay-Z and Denzel portrayed to the gangsters depicted [...]

Which Song mp3 Parallax Error Beheads You , Max Tundra Last Thursday night brought me to Schubas to hear the wonderful Deastro and Max Tundra with Coltrane Motion supporting. I had dinner beforehand, sampling for the first time the much publicized and supposedly famous mac n' cheese. Yes, it was quite tasty! But nowhere near as delectable as the amazing new tunes from Deastro, a.k.a. Randy Chabot. His newly found guitarist (whose name I failed to record, eek! bad blogger!) rounded out the sound nicely [...]
Donnybrook reviewed films playing the Starz Denver Film Festival this week on a 100 star system. Why? Because our opinion counts 20 times more than most peoples'. Our panel learned many lessons, one of them being: don't let Adam Scott near your girlfriend, especially if Adam Scott happens to be YOUR BROTHER. Words by Angora Holly Polo, Fritz Godard , and Donnybrook's newest Unnamed Intern #2 . Harmony and Me: 79 STARS [...]
It's hard to argue the best of anything - records, songs, cheeseburgers, episodes of Full House - but few will argue with Dr. Gavin Hopps, who claims that Morrissey , yes the one and only Moz, is thee greatest lyricist in British Pop history. He backs this argument in his recent book, Morrissey: The Pageant of His Bleeding Heart , and even goes so far as to liken the former Smiths frontman to literary figureheads like Oscar Wilde (Moz wins here, folks) and Philip Larkin. Hopps' book focuses on the singer's approaches [...]
DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB If you like Kasabian , you are going to love this six piece. They may describe themselves as " big beat junkie folk ", but they're wrong, they are the new Kasabian. It's that simple. There's a little bit of bluesy Primal Scream in there perhaps, possibly even a little bit of Oasis , but mainly Kasabian. We won't be ending the critique there however, because they also happen to write fucking awesome tunes. Very much like Kasabian do actually. You know the sort of songs; absolutely [...]

Last night, Pat and I DJ'ed at Lucky's (after the Series ended, poorly). Aside: I yelled, "just fucking win already, Yankees--you're pissing me off!" I don't care about sports at all, but am a Phillies fan by blood. Also, the Yanks are obviously the spoiled rich kid cocky asses of the sport--not likable. I couldn't help but think of the parallels between their win (AGAIN) and Bloomberg's win (AGAIN). Money really can buy you happiness, huh? I haven't DJ'ed that much and I am definitely still getting the hang of it with fades, transitions, etc. That said, there [...]
More than Zappa's Joe's Garage. More than Centerfield. More than the Indiana Jones Theme Song. More than AC/DC's Thunderstruck. More than even Glen Miller's In the Mood. If I ever got the once in a lifetime chance to request a single song for Phish to cover, there currently exists one song that I would rather hear over any other song. It's called Indoda Yejazi Elimnyama by Amaswazi Emvelo and comes from a ridiculously good recording called The Indestructible Beat of Soweto, Vol. 1. [...]

Friday is the very last day to apply (via Sonicbids) to showcase at SXSW 2010. SXSW 2009 was one of the big things that really got Boston Band Crush rolling with written interviews before the bands headed down to Austin and video interviews while they were at the festival . Now, we've got even bigger plans for covering SXSW 2010 and we're off to a big start! Last Wednesday, [...]
