I admit that the allure of using a controller to interact with animated action on a screen holds limited appeal for me. Perhaps its my age or the fact that a potato rolling down a hill has better hand-eye coordination than I do. But the latest incarnation of Rock Band which brickifies rock stars into claw handed stumps just mystifies me. Nevertheless LEGO Rock Band has attracted David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Queen. (Full track list after the jump.) Here's video of Blur (or as Joystiq so abtly put it, the band best known [...]

Not sure how I missed this last month, but one of my favorite acts, American Princes , have tossed up some new songs on their site, which leads us to anticipate a new album coming out sometime in the near future. If it's anything like Other People , I think we'll all be quite pleased with the output. Here's one of those new tunes to get you excited, but be sure to check out the other one on their site as well. Download: American Princes - Rock [...]

What do a London soul singer have in common with two remix producing princes from Sweden paired with a singing, songwriting American? Not a whole lot. But the respective worlds of Jack Peñate and Miike Snow converged at the Rock 'n' Roll Hotel Friday night for a night of pop revelry. Especially notable about this co-headlining tour was that this is the first time Peñate has ever toured North America (and indeed, this is probably the first exposure to him that people on this side of the pond will [...]
You like to dance, right? Then I've got the tour for you. English remix and electro house princes Simian Mobile Disco have announced dates for a fall North American tour. The duo comprised of James Ford and Jas Shaw will be hitting both American coasts as well as Toronto and Montreal. They will be joined by psychedelic funksters the Phenomenal Handclap Band for several dates. The tour kicks off October 28 at Boston's Paradise. To get a feel for their music, check [...]

If there is any guess as to why The Flaming Lips decided to call their new album Embryonic , it may have to due with the band's decision to reach out musically and draw from influences ranging from Joy Division to John Lennon. At least that's the sense we got after the band debuted two of the album's songs, "Convinced Of The Hex" and "Silver Trembling Hands", at the Pitchfork Music Festival last weekend. The first track, "Convinced Of The Hex", is what you'd expect from a Flaming Lips song: It's [...]
Chills, fam. Obama gets a pass for the mom jeans . Hell, Obama could have trotted out to the pitcher's mound in Prince's leopard assless pants and still be good in my book after this speech. Our President spoke before the NAACP for its annual meeting and it was that old campaign-stump-speech-giving Obama that made us so excited to vote for him in the first place. You could almost tell he was excited to let his hair down again and give an impassioned speech like old times. Though the "no [...]

The '80s and '90s were the heyday of movie soundtracks. Prince 's Purple Rain sold billions millions of copies as did the soundtracks to Dirty Dancing and Titanic . Since then, sales of soundtracks have tapered off. In the past few years, only the soundtracks from Garden State and Juno have even come close to leaving an indelible impression. For those who lust after the marrying of awesome music and cinema, here are a seven soundtracks (and movies) that have been condoned. A lot of the songs featured [...]

I'll probably always remember where I was when I heard the news of Michael Jackson's death, if only for the specificity of the circumstances: I was on a plane back from Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon when the news broke on my seatback TV. I'd boarded the plane planning to spend the bulk of my time writing this chart column, and I was all set to focus on the usual Billboard happenings. But that quickly went out the window. Within minutes of turning on the news on my seatback monitor, an MSNBC newscaster began rattling [...]

Dan Dyer @ Terminal 5...the JFK one 5/22 ( jetblueflickr ) JetBlue will be hosting a concert series, Live from T5 , from inside JFK airport's new Terminal 5 building. The six-month, 12-date concert series will "feature hand-picked emerging artists from around the U.S. as well as bands chosen based on public votes in a national online competition hosted by OurStage.com." Which means you can apply to play at the airport. The series kicked off with a show by Dan Dyer [...]

Once upon a time, your only options for entertainment during downtime at an airport were watching the flight times get pushed further and further back on the departures screen or eavesdropping on the couple sitting next to you, as they waged a vicious battle over who was supposed to remember where they left the car in the long-term lot. Those days are no more, now that JetBlue has partnered with Superfly Productions - the folks behind Bonnaroo and the Outside Lands festival - to present the Live From T5 concert series. On selected Fridays throughout the [...]

When Bowery Presents opened Terminal 5 , the name was almost a joke. JFK's Terminal 5 had been closed for many years, "under renovation," and it seemed like it would never reopen for airline travel. Well, JetBlue got the airline terminal back up and running, and now it might just give the venue a run for it's money. Yep, JetBlue is going to host performances in Terminal 5, and actually kicked off with a soft start on May 22 with Dan Dyer. They're puling out some bigger guns this Friday, June 26, with Nicole Atkins. Not all [...]
We spoke with Chase Pagan the other week right before his show at Mercury Lounge . The talented singer-songwriter discussed his new album (which is available on June 9 from Esperanza Plantation), Arkansas, and his family life. You have an album coming out June 9. Can you tell us a little about it? It's called Bells and Whistles . It will be my second released album, and it's got thirteen songs. We recorded seventeen songs in three weeks but did it kind of backwards. I would record the piano, guitar, and vocals first and [...]
For better and for The Worst, the Killers are a band intent on bleeding their strongest, most irresistible singles into albums that want desperately to be grand, All American masterpieces. Sometimes that means aping masters that have done it before (his name rhymes with Springsteen), and sometimes that means taking an orchestra to Ed Sullivan Theatre for a song that's all about slick chrome American princes and blue jean serenades. This is a post about the latter option. Last night Brandon Flowers shot for the moon on Letterman with "A Dustland Fairytale," and whatever you might think it lacks, ambition [...]
