Billboard has finally gotten over some of its archaic charting methods (Catalogue albums, anyone?) and is going to include a 15 spot chart for fold music beginning 2010. This will cater to artists like Ani DiFranco, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and their fans. This also comes with the revamping of the Billboard 200. It's still confusing, but better. Benefit albums and Tom Waits both seem to really "in" these days. Recently, the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band decided to combine the best of both worlds and create the incredibly down-to-business titled Preservation, an Album Benefiting Preservation Hall and Its Music Outreach Program . As a recently issued press release explains (via who else? TFB ), "over the last year, more than 20 of American music's most exciting artists traveled to Preservation Hall in New Orleans to collaborate with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on classic New Orleans repertoire." Among those 20 artists [...]
The story behind tUnE-yArDs is definitely an interesting one. The project has been slow in developing, and that's mostly because Merrill Garbus is the only person behind the name, and she recorded every bit of music you hear on the album by herself. She took 2 years to get it all done, using a digital voice recorder and whatever free audio editing software she could find. The end result is "BiRd-BrAiNs," a debut album that she first distributed via her website on a "pay what you want" scale. After making a halfway decent buck with that method, Marriage Records felt [...]

Featured on WXPN's World Café and WNYC's Soundcheck Watch "making of" video After just five days on Amazon.com's Top 100 Chart , Erin McKeown 's latest album, 'Hundreds of Lions,' peaked at #1 on the Bestseller MP3 Album Chart . 'Hundreds of Lions', released October 13 on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records , "truly shines," hails Paste Magazine. The accomplishment is the [...]
Last summer as a build up to his six appearances a DC's Fringe Festival, I bent the ear of anyone who'd give me the time about how truly great and unique and f'n hysterical a Hamell on Trial gig can be. Hell, I caught four of those six performances, did the lights for two of them, and STILL I was laughing my ass off each and every time. Then the unexpected and the well-deserved occurred: Ed won the Fringe Festival's distinguished Director's Award. That's right—HE WON THE WHOLE FREAKIN THING. Not that it's a competition, [...]

Indiecision Check Out act Boat Beam impressed us immensely with their debut album Puzzle Shapes (check out the single 'The Rain Pauly' on our music player). The project of Josephine Ayling (Australia), Aurora Aroca (Spain) and Alisha Buttke (US), Boat Beam call Spain home and and paint beautiful pictures with strings and Fiona Apple-esque pop sensibilities. We caught up with the band to talk about being sisters, musical influences and puzzles. Q1. How did the band come together? We were [...]

[See post on tinyways.com to listen to audio] It took me a while to fall for Regina Spektor a few years ago. Her anti-folk sound of Soviet Kitsch evoked Ani diFranco, Suzzane Vega and a bunch of other Contemporary Folk female artists. It just belonged to a different time. It was actually the more pop-ish sound of Begin to Hope that "discovered" her for me. Come to think of it, it was the visual language of Fidelity . I admit her last album, Far, is not one of my favorites. It's a good catchy album, but it [...]
Let's do church with Kirk Franklin —he's black Baptist so we're going to be there a minute. Then let's do struggle with Massive Attack, Macy Gray, Grace Jones, Lamya, Jhelisa, Jean Grae, Ani DiFranco, Nina Simone, Meshell Ndegeocello, The Pretenders , and Erykah Badu . And let's close out with Concha Buika and Chucho Valdes investigating the music of Chavela Vargas .
Sometime in 2005, not long before Hurricane Katrina came along and backhand-slapped our city to near-oblivion, my sister Asante asked me to make a mix CD for her. She wanted something inspirational without being pretentious; something optimistic, minus the naiveté. I put a mix together, called it Asante's Mix, gave it to her and forgot about it. A few months later, I was at her house and heard the CD playing. Ironically, it happened to be a time when I was in need of a little inspiration and optimism of my own. Surprised that I liked the tunes [...]

Unlike the slow pace of last week , we weren't at a loss for stories this week. In fact, we didn't even get to the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam lineup announcement on Friday. The initial lineup of moe., Counting Crows, Ani DiFranco and Mule doesn't get our juices pumping, but there's still plenty of time for more artists to be announced. Plus, the special guest roster of Trombone Shorty, DJ Logic, Audley Freed, Jackie Greene, Kevn Kinney, Eric Krasno, Col. Bruce Hampton and Robert Kearns shows promise. [...]

With the Legion Arts live performance schedule well underway, we are seeing the expected eclectic selection of acts- everything from Viking Folk Music to Czech bluegrass . I'm really excited for the prospects of the upcoming season! Next weekend- 10/18- we see a couple of female singer-songwriters both making their debut in Cedar Rapids and at CSPS. While both take a distinctively different approach to their art, they both are utilizing a business model that involves direct contributions from their fan base. Melissa Greener is described [...]

Hundreds of Lions has teeth (and, at times, too many). Erin McKeown is one of a few contemporary folksingers who has transcended the pigeonhole that traps most of her comrades. It's hard-earned, though, over many releases and tours with the likes of Josh Ritter and Ani diFranco, on whose label Hundreds of Lions appears. Some of her transcendence comes from her songwriting talent: she excels at writing songs that are just oblique enough to be quirky and fresh while still being universal. However, her success...

Long before Katy Parry came to the air waves, Jill Sobule was the one experimenting and kissing girls. In fact, in August, Jill ripped into Katy for borrowing her title . As an MTV kid in the early 90s, I loved Sobule's cutesy ode to experimentation. Granted, I haven't kept up with her since then and have apparently missed albums 3-8, the most recent released earlier this year (and to generally quite positive reviews). With Jill comes Erin McKeown . The jazzy cabaret/rock/swing/folkster has toured with Andrew Bird, Ani DiFranco, Josh Ritter, and released her [...]

She beckons you with a gripping wail. She's elegant yet primal. Call her angelic, call her wicked, but Alyse Black embodies the red-headed siren singer-songwriter. Moka is preparing a big end of decade list, so I thought I make few companion lists along with it. A look back and summary for where MdM has gone. Ani DiFranco - Cloud Blood To the Teeth ( Righteous Babe. 1999 ) To the Teeth is the last album I remember buying because I heard it on radio. I had been driving all day when this song come in and air changes. It is not just another tune, but [...]

Singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams discusses her music career with Greg Kot at Turn It Up . "There was no money in my family," Williams says. "My dad was supportive of me creatively, but he had so much trouble as a poet making a living, he wanted me to have something to fall back on. And he was right, because I didn't have a damn thing to fall back on. So I had to do this, because I didn't have any other skills. I gave college a try, at the University of Arkansas, studying [...]
