Produced by fellow Stockholmer Tobias Froberg (Theresa Andersson , Peter Moren ), third album from Swedish folk/pop chanteuse Sofia Talvik may have taken well over a year to finally get a U.S. release, but we're of the mind that the modest, simple pleasures derived make Jonestown well worth the wait. Talvik possesses a deceptively airy voice that seems lit with a special inner warmth even as she [...]

...then you might like The Tiny. For the past three or four years, I have been making my way over to The Tiny's MySpace to listen to their Swedish sounds because I could never find it available anywhere online. Their music is rather specific to a certain listener and not for everyone, but you can easily come to appreciate the sweet, vulnerable vocals of singer Ellekari. This new video is for The Tiny's first single "Last Weekend" from their new album Gravity & Grace , which was directed by Jacob Mohlin. They just [...]

Swedish songstress Anna Ternheim opened the night, borrowing a few members of Loney Dear to provide the instrumentation behind her sweet pipes. The collaboration worked beautifully, as Ternheim's tunes align more closely with Loney Dear's gentle style than the Asobi Seksu set that would follow. Undoubtedly, Ternheim won over some new fans; she made the most of her opening opportunity, and was called back to the stage by the crowd for an encore, despite only being the appetizer. As Asobi Seksu took the stage, it quickly became clear that [...]
photos by Toby Tenenbaum DOWNLOAD: Asobi Seksu - Suzanne (Hope Sandoval cover) (MP3) Loney Dear @ Bowery Ballroom As the night progressed, lyrics and meaning gradually ceded to pure melody and sound. [Anna] Ternheim 's careful precision led to Loney Dear 's contrapuntal harmonies, which led to Asobi Seksu 's waves of distortion, and voices soared higher as words grew less distinct. Like Suzanne Vega, Ternheim sings in [...]

Loney Dear | Bowery Ballroom | October 16, 2009 I feel a little silly that I've been getting this band's name wrong, but I only just now noticed it. Oops! Anyway, Sweden's Loney Dear played at Bowery Ballroom the other night in between Anna Ternheim 's opening set and Asobi Seksu 's headlining one. The set seemed a little awkward to me. While I appreciate the efforts to get audience participation, a little explanation on how to do so would've been nice. It seemed only a few small number of [...]

Asobi Seksu | Bowery Ballroom | October 16, 2009 Asobi Seksu ended their tour with Lonely, Dear last night in Philadelpia, but we caught them on Friday when they played the Bowery Ballroom right here in New York City. This was the same show that Anna Ternheim played. Lead singer Yuki Chikudate had a bit of keyboard trouble in the beginning, bit it didn't stop the band from delivering an amazing performance. Check out some photos from Friday's night show after the jump. www.asobiseksu.com | [...]

Anna Ternheim | Bowery Ballroom | October 16, 2009 Last night at the Bowery Ballroom, Anna Ternheim brought her beautiful songs to the stage. She was aided by members of Lonely, Dear, who acted as her backing band for the evening. I'm not usually a fan of a single person with an acoustic guitar, but Ternheim is one of the few who can do it right. It was a quiet way to kick off the weekend, a soft preparation for the later acts, Asobi Seksu and Lonely, Dear. [...]
There is never a shortage of shows in Philadelphia, and it makes it hard then, to choose between all of the great ones when they just so happen to fall upon one night. On Saturday, October 17th, 2009 Girl About Town's head spins whilst we choose between venues for the many live gigs happening this weekend. Sweden's award winning artist, Anna Ternheim will be opening for our favorites; Asobi Seksu and Loney, Dear at Johnny Brenda's . Anna, who is used to sell-out crowds in Sweden will be playing [...]

Frank Yang As is becoming something of a tradition for me, I once again spent Thanksgiving this year at a show rather than with family (we got together earlier in the weekend so stop judging me), though it was with a sort of extended family - labelmates in Loney Dear and Asobi Seksu (both on Polyvinyl ) and country(wo)men in Loney Dear and Anna Ternheim (all Swedes). Yeah, that's sort of a stretch but whatever. There'd been some vagueness about the precise order of the sets - the [...]
