My introduction to Sharon Van Etten – and I'm sure I'm not the only one who found her this way – was through The Antlers' Hospice . I just had to know whose haunting voice that was singing at the end of "Thirteen," and so I discovered her debut album, Because I Was In Love , a collection of songs full of the heartbreaking vulnerability that her Hospice guest spot had promised. Next came Epic , which showed Van Etten gaining a lot of confidence both in her songwriting and herself as a person, but [...]

Patterns - Daniel Cheetham Like most Mancunians, I'm packed with civic pride. And, like a typically arrogant Manc, I will gleefully wallow in the glory of Manchester's music scene. I'm not one for nostalgia (although it still rankles that King Of The Slums didn't conquer the world in the late Eighties), but I am constantly thrilled by the gush of new bands coming out of Manchester. The music scene in Manchester seems particularly fertile at present. There is a huge swathe of artists quietly gathering their respective followings across the city. Even a short [...]
Sasquatch!'s 2012 lineup is officially one day old and that means it's time for some post-reveal analysis. In the pages that follow, we run through the biggest highlights and surprises appearing on this year's bill, in addition to the most glaring omissions. We also highlight five names worth knowing as you prepare for Memorial Day weekend at the Gorge. Highlights Beck Stalk enough festival forums and you'll see Beck's name pop up every now and then. Shortly after these wishlist proposals there's typically a textual scoff and/or write off [...]
Brooklyn-based band Milagres don't have a groundbreaking sound but they've previously proven themselves adept in building indie-emotional-pop walkabouts in the same vein as The National or The Antlers on their first album Seven Summits in 2008. The group's second album Glowing Mouth attempts to immerse the band further into tension-packed melancholia and often end up reminiscent of Arcade Fire's obsessions ('Here to Stay', 'Gentle Beast', 'Fright of Thee'). Stadium-sized synthesizers and over-the-top drum sounds sometimes aren't enough and the lazy hopping in night-wonders of 'Lost In The Dark', the throbbing [...]
![[Review/Listen] – Cloud Nothings – "Attack on Memory"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4030579_lg.jpg)
Tweet The amount of Rock records has been decreasing at a surprisingly steep pace in the past 10 years, as many bands have begun to embrace untechnical rhythms, hazy vocals, and instruments laced in reverb. The resultant change birthed several great bands (Japandroids, Cymbals Eat Guitars) and hundreds of horrible ones (practically all the rest). From somewhere in the middle of those camps came Cloud Nothings' debut album last year. Dylan Baldi, a student at Case Western Reserve University, began Cloud [...]

A few weeks ago I posted a selection of my favourite songs of 2011 . A selection of 15 or so powered by the beauty of You Tube. Since then I have read some excellent lists that went a whole lot further. Up to 100 in fact. Like here , here , here , here and here . So I decided to create a list for myself. No real reason other then that I like to create lists. I see some list makers will limit each artist to only one song. Some go [...]

Sharon Van Etten is a special person. Genuine, passionate, humble and talented; she's a rare combination of many great things. On this occasion, we sit down to talk upstairs in a cosy Paddington pub. It's the last day in a week of European press ahead of her forthcoming record Tramp , to be released on the 7 February 2012 by Jagjaguwar . I've been a fan of Sharon's music for the past three years. Along with her self released home recordings CD, she has also put out two records – Because I Was In Love and [...]

"It's better to burn out than fade away" is a quote often bandied around on the modern alternative scene. 'Ternion', the second full-length offering from Manchester-based indietronic three-piece We Have Band , shows there can be a degree of nuance to synth-pop. Think New Order , Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark or the Antlers or Kraftwerk spawning a mildly irked Hot Chip , and you won't be far off. What strikes you about this album is its dynamism: in places it is bombastic and [...]
Feel the Sound , Imperial Teen's fifth long-player, is an agreeable piece of middle-of-the-road indie pop. Nothing more. And that ain't a bad thing, necessarily. Some indie rock bands want to make a serious artistic statement. Think Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, maybe Grizzly Bear, and the Antlers and go on from there. Then there are indie pop acts who just want to make something that's fun and bubbly. Into that category you can throw Imperial Teen, originally based in San Francisco but whose members have spread out across the continental United States. Their fifth full-length, and first in five [...]
Here are 50 songs that defined 2011 for me. Listen. Enjoy. Tell me what you think. And yep, that's my ugly mug on the cover. Given and Taken in Ink's Top 50 Songs of 2011 from gtimusic on 8tracks . Here's the playlist: 1. Wilco - One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend) 2. City Reign - Anywhere Anyway 3. The Mountain Goats - Never Quite Free 4. Zaac Pick - Whitewater 5. Caleb Price is a 49 year old 1st generation American who immigrated here from Bratislava in 1992. She makes a living by traveling to rural areas of the midwest and the adjoining bible belt where she frightens superstitious rubes into giving her money and expensive cutlery by pretending to be a powerful sorceress . It's a dangerous line of work - there's always the chance she'll be caught, in which case she'll surely face public immolation in some remote Nebraskan town square - but she prefers it to her previous career back home in Slovak Republic, which consisted of [...]
Last weekend, Backstage Rider 's Mikala Taylor hit the high seas for five days of distortion. She returned safely and unscathed, though we can't speak for her ears. We're pretty sure she had a blast, nonetheless, but we'll let the photos do the talking. We're not sure when, exactly, the full surrealism of being on a boat sailing from Miami to Mexico as part of The Weezer Cruise actually hit. Was it when Weezer played "Hash Pipe" shortly after the ship's horns sounded and we left Vice City? Or was it [...]

Chairlift - Something By Russell Warfield While it's true to say that Charlift 's 2008 single 'Bruises' didn't become as embedded into the public consciousness as something like Feist's '1234' when it was used in an iPod advert a few years ago, it nevertheless drew plenty of positive attention from the exposure all the same. But in an almost Herculean effort to not capitalise on momentum, Charilift went into radio silence for four years , underwent a course of inter-band relationship drama, lost a member, and [...]
