Sigur Rós frontman, Jónsi, will be releasing his solo album, Go later this spring. If you recall, back in December, Jónsi gave away the gorgeous first single from Go , " Boy Lilikoi ", which you can still download if you follow that link. The sunny and lively musical arrangements on Go are credited to Nico Muhly, who worked with Grizzly Bear on the gorgeous arrangements on Veckatimest; he is also responsible for the arrangements on Antony & The Johnsons' The Crying Light . Jónsi and Nico's brainchildren are a dream [...]

As I think we're all aware, it's getting harder and harder these days to find a complete album that's enjoyable to listen to al the way through. With most people downloading single tracks from iTunes or Amazon (if they pay for them at all), the very concept of an album seems to be falling by the wayside. But every once in a while something does come along that is crafted as a whole, an immersive experience, even going so far as having intros, tracks blending together, skits, whatever. The Decemberists gave us a virtual rock opera last [...]

I thought I'd mix things up and get my best albums of the year 2009 out first then work backwards through what I listened to (According to Last.fm). I must say this was an amazing year for music and I plead with my friends who "cannot find anything new to listen to" that they just need to listen around, become an ear slut, do what you have to do to get into all this great music. Partly, this year for me has been a good one in music because I've been sitting at the computer so much after work [...]
WXPN's World Cafe features a live performance by Ted Leo . At the New Yorker , author Dave Eggers remembers J.D. Salinger, and the Guardian Music Blog explains how Salinger created the original rock star. The Scotsman profiles the indie record label Chemikal Underground. For Braithwaite, there is no Chemikal sound, but there is a feeling. "They're a very Scottish label, and very Scottish people. The music has [...]
Elaine Lachica is a New York singer/songwriter backed by a band with some major indie-rock credentials: drummer Mark Stepro (Ben Kweller), bassist Rob Calder (Ari Hest), guitarist Aaron Lee Tasjan (New York Dolls), a string quartet led by violinist Rob Moose (Sufjan Stevens, Antony And The Johnsons) and a brass section led by trumpeter Jon [...]
There is something about marvelously dramatic orchestration and theatrical takes on very straight-forward stories that just gets me. If there is anything the The Irrepressibles achieve almost effortlessly, it is that of removing me from myself and hurling me into a place of complete vulnerability... where in a swirl of painted faces and big moves, I begin to feel a wide-range of griping emotions for no reason other than the genuine influence of sound and my gullible ears. Their debut album Mirror Mirror reflects a smokey image of the Antony and the Johnsons , but [...]
by Andrew Frisicano Andrew W.K. w/ Fucked Up in Brooklyn on November 5th ( more by Jake Forney ) One of the best kept secrets in the entertainment industry, Jonté is known to the stars as a virtuoso choreographer, able to bring out the beast in his clientelle, which includes Beyonce Knowles among others. As a solo act, he brings it on all fronts, executing the freshest moves while spitting the fiercest vocal heard. His unique urban fem style is shattering [...]

I had heard of Mapei awhile ago, but never took much notice to her music. I was wrong to do so, seeing as she is extraordinary. Mapei is a hip-hop/electronic/club/pop artist from Stockholm, Sweden, and hasn't really had that much exposure, from what I have seen, and has actually been out for quite awhile. She reminds me a lot of Kid Sister, and dare I say she may even be better? Don't get me wrong, I love Kid Sis, but Mapei's flow is much more smooth and her overall tone is just more gritty. [...]

Click image to download these albums While assembling a top list for 2009 I found that there were four albums that really blew me away and stuck with me for the entire year. Trying to choose another six seemed a little silly to me, so here are my top four, with an honorable mention category for number five. Lhasa de Sela and Jay Reatard put out fantastic albums in 2009 and both died young in early 2010. I highly recommend checking out "Lhasa" and "Watch Me Fall." 4. Animal Collective – "Merriweather [...]

2009 — what a crapsuck of a year. Without overstating or getting into it, it was easily the worst since, well, high school at least and I am not sorry that it is over. If I ever needed an object lesson in saving power of music, this was it. Music was one of the few things that keep the year from being a complete personal disaster. I've read others claim that 2009 wasn't a great year for music. In one sense I agree: there were few great albums — albums good enough to be considered for regular rotation [...]

VV Brown debut US tour dates announced British singer-songwriter's 'Travelling Like The Light' album Released in US on February 9, 2010 Following a year's worth of continuous praise from her home base in the UK, echoed by enthusiastic plaudits from Stateside media tastemakers, the warm-voiced, strikingly visual singer-songwriter VV Brown will give U.S. audiences a bigger taste of her talents later this month, when she plays her North American debut live shows. These appearances [...]
Last year was a good year for music, particularly for artists who put out quieter work. For example, Antony and the Johnsons and Andrew Bird keep the decibel level pretty low. Yet, in their own unassuming ways they still deliver some flashy work. Antony Hegarty's voice can make your chest vibrate and Bird's violin can swoop through a track and knock you over. These flourishes are part of their charm. But when an album isn't afraid to maintain a low profile for its entire duration, it can be a welcome and unexpected surprise. Woodpigeon 's Die Stadt Muzikanten [...]
