railcars a/k/a multi-instrumentalist Aria Jalali (+ Sam Farzin when on tour) has a new EP entitled Cathedral With No Eyes . The EP: recounts the life of Edmund the Martyr, a 9th century king of East Anglia with songs about his life and succession to the throne as a young boy, his conquests, his suffering at the hands of vikings and death by their arrows. Let me just say that this is hands down the best damn EP about a 9th century king of East Anglia EVER. If you like [...]

San Francisco garage-noise-pop outfit Railcars dropped their new record yesterday, a mystical collective of ferocious bouts of electro noise dubbed Cathedral With No Eyes . You may remember Railcards from our debut/premiere of "Passion Of St. Edmund (Rebirth)" , or maybe even our premature review of Cathedral With No Eyes from a month and a half ago. Frontman Aria Jalali takes noise and throws it through a lollipop dreamboat; its almost unbelievably upbeat pop nature is something that simply must be heard. [...]

You know how you have a thousand channels on your television? And a thousand stations on your satellite radio? And an infinite number of media options on the internet? That's sweet, right? I'd argue that, in reality, it sucks (kind of). This sort of fragmentation of both media and audience means that there will never (ever) be another cultural phenomenon like, say, The Beatles. Something ridiculous like half of the population saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Are The Beatles inherently "better" than, say, Radiohead? Of course not. But, more people paid attention to The Beatles, because there were way [...]
Take Swan Lake's Beast Moans, throw it in some mud, stick it in a fluorescent-lit garage, beat it with a baseball bat, and throw it in a well. Then you'll start to get the idea of Railcars. Aria Jalali, the multi-instrumentalist face of the band, just released the new Cathedral With No Eyes EP (on Stumparumper), [...]

Aria Jalali manages to retains the synth pop elements of his first ep, Cities vs. Submarines , on the new 123 Cathedral With No Eyes . What is added improves upon that template already laid to manifest itself as a dense, sonically packed experiment in noise. Both of the 'Passion of Saint Edmund' tracks comprising the middle of the album particularly entrap listeners in that mesmerizing daze of sonic depth. But don't think of Railcars as having gone experimental, they still have the same danceable pop songs that stay stuck in your head for days. [...]

I love noise. I love noise music, have for ages. But it's often hard to find noise that is accessible enough, where there's actually music in there somewhere. railcars are part of a genre called " shitgaze " which causes me to laugh every time I see it. Yes, it's a respectable classification. This stuff by railcars is really noisy noise/pop. Castles starts out with a great big assault to your ears and just as you're very certain you should turn this shit off it pokes in a melody to change your mind. It's also the [...]

The idea of a church with eyes gives us Orwellian shivers. It's bad enough kids are muttering 'under god' each morning with a hand on their heart--damn Puritanical bliss. We are moved by the lord, however--and by 'the lord' I mean railcars . After a 7-inch produced by Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart introduced Aria Jalali to fans of all things Stewart-endorsed, railcars is growing their medium (12-inches of vinyl this go-around) and going full-gusto with the release of Cathedrals With No Eyes . May the holy light of skuzz cleanse you of your sins. [...]

Our homie Aria Jalali, aka Railcars has his new album up for pre-order right now! It comes out October 6th, but don't sleep on the pre-order. I know what you're thinking, "why pre-order an album when I can just buy it when it comes out?" Here's the answer: if you wait that long, you're stupid. The vinyl comes with a poster, a pin, and MP3's all for $10 (including shipping). That's some pretty good swag... But if you pre-order it you get "hella goodies." That's a direct quote from Aria. Plus, someone at random who orders a pre-sale will get [...]
The time has come to follow last year's Cities vs. Submarines ( free download ), produced by Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, and Railcars does not in the slightest bit disappoint. Spewing some Bay area art rock on the faces of the young, Cathedral With No Eyes brings more well thought out distortion and clever transitioning to the table which creates a continuous rhythm making CWNE one psychotic fucking song. Of course if you go way of the vinyl then you've gotta flip the record, so by default it can become two. [...]

This week, our podcast features Railcars , the recording project of San Francisco's Aria C Jalali. Jalali began recording solo under his own name while at UC Berkeley, gathering a band under the Railcars moniker when he was invited to open for the Handsome Furs in early 2008. He returned to working solo to record Railcars' first 73 Cities vs. Submarines , released almost a year ago on Gold Robot Records . Recorded by Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) in his kitchen, the five-song set featured lyrics drawn from Aria's vivid [...]

railcars- cathedral with no eyes (EP) 8/10 There's nothing like the internet for bringing bands and fans closer together. Having heard what in my mind might have been every demo track for this EP throughout its making, I'm sure in actual fact there were many hundreds more draft mixes that never made it to myspace or my inbox. So precise in his production is Aria Jalali, the voice, brains and brawn of railcars, that he produces demo after demo of droney, excitable noise rock, only to shed that skin and [...]

Railcars is Aria Jalali and his music is heavily influences by that of Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu. Stewart, in fact, mixed Jalali's debut single, Cities Vs. Submarines , a fact we noted in the FensePost feature of Railcars . Railcars' latest release appears to continue in a similar vein with noise-ridden instrumentation and wild, piercing yelps. Even as unmastered versions, "Passion Of St. Edmund (Rebirth)" and "Castles" show true progression for Railcars and Jalali. The songs are seemingly more cohesive and filled with additional hooks then [...]

Apathetic Princess It's no secret that EMJ keeps a close eye on LA, many enigmatic and inspiring artists emanate out of the fog of this famous area. Plenty of bored college kids dabble in music, but many attempt to make it a vocation. I'm not sure of Dasha (svetlana the anthropologist)'s intentions, or even inspirations; she keeps her internet persona hidden behind swathes of droning guitar. I'm not complaining about this, sometimes music needs mystery. The waves of echoey guitar in her 'demo 12 and 'dronesistor radio' wrap a comforting [...]

We've written about Aria C. Jalali's project, Railcars , before . We're very pleased to announce that Railcars will be releasing a full length album this summer - August 4th on Stumparumper Records. The album will be called Cathedral With No Eyes and it'll released as a 123 record (limited to 1000 copies), as well as out on iTunes and via his website. He's been touring with Handsome Furs (a logical choice) and will tour on his own next fall in support of the album. The tracklisting is as follows... side a [...]

Aria Jalali is currently putting the final touches to Railcars ' forthcoming album Cathedral With No Eyes . The album will see release online as well as on a limited pressing of 1000 123 vinyl through Stumparumper Records. Cathedral With No Eyes is an album we've been anticipating since last year's Cities vs Submarines EP ( download ) produced by Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart. Railcars will play several shows this summer in San Francisco and hit the road on US and European land late this year and early next. Tour dates [...]

Juno's unrelenting hate Like gunshots firing out of a canon at synchronised aliens who are tweeting love poems to each other and scattering from distortion crashing in waves all around them, micromagician is a new noise project that reflects the inner ramblings of a creative mind too prolific and inspired to contain itself. The eerie voices on 'gospel girls' whine and sigh in a magnetic, hypnotic amble, eventually called away by a dusty bleep. 'post pond song' is like the sequel to railcars ' 'life of st edmund' from [...]

I love stumbling across great acts by mistake. Recently, elsewhere, I posted a brief rant on the Joy Division film about Ian Curtis called Control . In the post, I noted that my true introduction to Joy Division's music stemmed from a cover of "Celebration" Xiu Xiu included on Chapel Of The Chimes . Well, when I saw a post by Railcars titled Xiu Xiu fans rejoice… I had to check them out. The post noted that Railcars' upcoming album was recorded and produced [...]

Rabid Pixie Meat So it looks like someone stole your favourite band name. Yep, Aria Jalali from Railcars has a new band, called A/S/L? and it's the most outrageous thing we've heard since BMX Rapists . In a similar vein to Jeremy from God Bows To Math 's project, A/S/L? consists of noisy distorted guitar, screeching, squealing, screaming vocals through a giant, hand-painted loudspeaker and primitive drumming on a kit consisting of a kick drum, snare, floor tom and crash cymbal. The simple set up [...]
