Everyone's in NY for CMJ this week. Well, except for me - I am sitting this year out. This volume of Stranded in Stereo came together quicker than any other issue, and although there are no BIG NAMES, we're confident that at least half of these will be the toast of the town by next year. Charn consists of four dudes who have known each other since childhood (and two them are brothers), and it shows. Anyone who has ever gotten together with childhood friends knows how easy it is to regress immediately to the aggressive-but-not-edgy days of prepubesence, the days when music was something to play air guitar to, to use as inspiration in mirror-poses and jump-on-the-bed sing-alongs. Still haven't had the time or inclination to dig deep into the new Astrid Swan record, but I'm feeling "2000 - 2010 (I'm not even 30)" . Musically speaking, it's got a great heavy synth sound, complete with electronic toms, but it's the ld and grumpy lyrical content I love best. Personally, I'm on the wrong side of 30, but I commiserate fully, though my excuse was working east coast hours for years while living in the SF Bay Area.
