I've been making things. Out of dead cows. But more on that later. During my absence I took some time to taste what was out there in the real music world. Alternative still sucks, Modern Hip-Hop/RnB/Black People music (no racist) for the most part sucks except for R. Kelly (crazy motherfucker) and Gucci (still doing his thing from jail wordup ), Country was saved by Carrie Underwood (luv u babes), Pop music will always be amazing [ sup @taylorswift13 (lanky ass bitch) [...]

Bloggers these days end up receiving more remixes than original music. I'm pretty sure other bloggers can attest to to this fact, but just in case they're feeling extra private about it I'll ask that you take my word for it. Out of say 100 emails I receive a day, I'd say at least 50 of them are remixes. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I like a good remix just as much if not more than the average joe. I DJ'd a club night every single Friday for nearly 3 [...]

In what I consider a major "coup" for this blog, I've received permission from the great Al Kooper (if you don't know who he is go read this ) to post MP3s of his infamous "Kapusta Kristmas Albums". I'm starting with number 3 as I've only got Volumes 3, 4 and 5. Trying to get my mitts on the other two. Tapes of these records have been a massive influence and source of amusement to me and all my musician friends over the last 20 years or so, since my buddy Mark Spencer [...]
Yesterdays first attempt at breaking the back of my overflowing inbox went fairly well I thought... 450 emails read and errr 5 tracks posted! It's honestly not that I get sent a lot of terrible music (although I do get my fair share) its more I don't see the point in featuring tracks I think are merely " alright ". There was also a huge amount of junk, " So You Think You Can Dance " updates, and PR lies... " Hi Music Like Dirt, We've been reading your blog for some time now and think its one [...]

Super Bowl XLIV is almost upon us. So it's only right that we dust off the old classic, The Chicago Bear's "The Super Bowl Shuffle". But everyone's seen that video. There's not an 80s retrospective that doesn't at least mention it. Here's what you might not know: " The Super Bowl Shuffle" was only the beginning. After The Bears' track made it to the 41st place on the Billborad charts, got a Grammy nomination for Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance, and led into them decimating the Patriots at Super Bowl XX, every team wanted a some of [...]
Hello, Friday. Seems like it's been ages. Ordinarily, we'll probably use this space to send you off with a random batch of free music, just in case you haven't come across it elsewhere. This week, however, we've got all of these videos piling up around the place and thought we'd clear a few out to begin with. Still a fairly random five, in other words, just more demanding of your senses. First up: Hot Chip. The London-based act releases their new album, One Life Stand , next Tuesday. They played the title track-- with The [...]
In the crowd of England songs that were released for the 2006 World Cup there was a bit of gold... A diamond in the rough. No it wasn't the Embrace track (obviously), it was a song that was should have got more attention and it baffles me as to why it didn't. The name of the band who created this masterpiece are Dreadzone and you have heard their music being associated with footie elsewhere before. If you've watched Match Of The Day, or Sky Sports or any fitba related show you will have heard their [...]
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution, the national museum of the United States. From its founding in 1948, Folkways has sought to record and document the entire world of sound. Topics have included traditional, ethnic, and contemporary music from around the world; poetry, spoken word, and instructional recordings in numerous languages; and documentary recordings of individuals, communities, current events, and natural sounds. Upon acquiring Folkways Recordings in 1987, the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage agreed that virtually all of the label's 2,168 titles would remain "in print" forever — a [...]

With all these new introducing posts I am enjoying running at the moment, I ask bands to send me a short biography that I can't find on Myspace. I think that the one from Cal is totally the best so far. There is plenty of substance to his music, lyrically reminding me of a young Billy Bragg. As Cal himself says they are songs of real life. Having checked him out there was not a track that did not take me back to halcyon days of youth. Standout tracks [...]

One of our favorite things about Handsome is connecting with fans and like-minded, interesting people. Jamie Kidd is one of these people and he just happened to be from our hometown Toronto and be a rad dj/producer as well. As the resident for Platform and the Box of Kittens (a notorious underground warehouse party) events in Toronto, he has performed alongside some super legit artists that include Trentemoller, Tiefschwarz, Radio Slave, Matthew Dear, James Holden, Marc Romboy, Gregor Tresher, and Timo Maas. Those are some pretty large names there for the techno, tech.house, and minimal [...]

After his Outkast Remix , Thoko was kind enough to send over his remix of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Again, another winner for Thoko. This one is accompanied by a video. One week from tomorrow, Michael Franti and Spearhead head out for one of the biggest gigs in the band's illustrious history - a nine week arena tour opening for John Mayer. Spearhead stands to win over a ton of fans on the jaunt, but I wondered if the group would change things up from the typical politically-charged sets we've come to expect from them. Our pal Richard Gehr asked Franti that question along with a bunch of others for an interview that ran on the HeadCount blog . John Mayer and [...]

Blende was recently contracted out to do a remix for MSTRKRFT but they're having thoughts that it may never get officially released so instead of sit on an unreleased remix, why not send it to blogs? Get ready to pump fists, and not in a jersey sort of way. MSTRKRFT - Breakaway (Blende Remix) Download audio file (Breakaway%20(blende%20remix). mp3)

It's somewhat strange a band like Jaguar Love posted an ad for a drummer on Craigslist alongside the non-stop posts for Jerry Garcia guitar technique lessons, but here it is: Hi we are Jaguar Love and we are looking for a touring drummer. We are an electro/punk band composed of Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato (formerly of the Blood Brothers). We have a record coming out world wide march 2nd and are looking for a drummer to tour with us starting in march. We wrote our entire record to a drum machine [...]
The curious end to Conan O'Brien's stint as the host of the Tonight Show played out on Friday (Jan. 22) night. It's unlikely O'Brien will remain off-air for very long, and the good will that has flown toward him (and the sizable cash payout) will make the blow a soft one. According to O'Brien's intro, Neil Young called him up and asked if he could appear on the final show when the news was announced. The talk show host duly obliged, and Young delivered this acoustic version of "Long May You Run," [...]

Not a shabby deal at all that for the price of a non-perishable canned good (actually I brought two) for the Daily Bread Food Bank, I got to see Dinosaur Jr. play earlier this evening at Sonic Boom in Toronto. However, even though I'd made it to Sonic Boom at least an hour before the band started, it was already packed enough that my viewing options were non-existent. So as it goes I didn't see a thing except for a quick glimpse of J Mascis. No photos from me unfortunately but it isn't a big deal - the set itself [...]
