This is the kind of post that I write when I'm feeling jaded and downtrodden and mind-numbingly lethargic. A short post about a track I know well, that requires little research, and keeps the blog ticking over until I find my brain and spark and inspiration again. This song brought unexpected tears to my eyes just a few short hours ago as I drove along a dark country road. There's something about the strings and the fluttery flutey bits that never fails to move me. You don't keep me company, You all turn out [...]

Falls Festival organisers have been forced to reveal this year's lineup a week earlier than intended, after it was leaked Wednesday night. Now in its 14th year, the festival takes place in Lorne, situated along the famous Great Ocean Road in Victoria, and continues to bring in the new year with a musical bang. The confirmed lineup includes Yeah Yeah Yeahs , Grizzly Bear , Andrew Bird , Chairlift , White Rabbits and loads more . - [...]
Neil Finn is no ordinary Kiwi musician. In fact, the man behind Crowded House is a warlock who controls the universe - with Mana and mandolin playing. Really, there's no other theory that can explain how he's managed to one-up his 2001 project, 7 Worlds Collide . But, he has, and on September 29th, The Sun Came Out arrives, bringing together musical forces Wilco and Radiohead. While 2001 featured Eddie Vedder, The Smiths' Johnny Marr alongside Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway [...]

It's mid-July, and here come the tomatoes! Little grape tomatoes, pear-shaped yellow tomatoes, and gobs of the most ginormous tomatoes I have ever grown. The big one above is almost the size of a softball. This is only what I picked yesterday. A lot more are on the way. Soon we will be eating them for lunch and dinner and on our breakfast cereal and giving them away to neighbors and co-workers. Sadly, I cannot figure out how to make them available to you for download. This photo is the only way they digitize. [...]

Last week Triple J announced its most recent Hottest 100 Songs of All Time countdown, as voted on by the public, and as is always the case with such things, I read the list with varying amounts of dismay and incredulity. And a large amount of "I shouldn't care about this so why am I allowing this foolishness to piss me off?" I won't bore you all with my pithy shallow analysis, but I will say this - while I don't mind Nirvana and I quite like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', I certainly don't think it's the 'hottest song of [...]
Quantifying something as subjective as music always reeks of self-indulgence, thankfully Triple J's Hottest 100 of All Time unlike lists such as "The 20 greatest jazz pianists under 20, with 20 inches of hair" compiled by (insert fluffy English music journal here) feels less like masturbation and more like a welcome trip down memory lane. The list celebrated twenty years of existence for the youth radio Grand Daddy and received more than half a million votes from listeners. The end result which probably also serves as a demographic breakdown of Triple J's audience, smelled [...]
"When it comes down to it, she is right. She's always been right and you know it." - Adam Donovan from Augie March Islands in the Stream - Dolly Parton (oh yeah and Kenny Rogers too)

While playing in the basement with Duke Jr., I saw this CD and on the shelf. Popped it in and remembered how great the leadoff track is. " We had the entire album mapped out down to the very last detail before we went in to record the album with Paul McKercher (Augie March, Magic Dirt, You Am I). We're just anal like that. We wanted to write the exact opposite of our first album so we wrote a commercial pop album to see if we could do it. " - Simon Carter of The Cops from Lifelounge This is about as poppy as you could get from The Cops, was on the EP they released before Drop It In Their [...]

Dan Luscombe during the recording of Havilah. I recently had the chance to interview The Drones' Dan Luscombe via email as they travelled around Australia with the Groovin' The Moo Festival and their own headlining shows. Since Havilah came out a while ago now I figured I'd avoid questions about the record and instead focus on The Drones' touring life and what lay ahead in 2009. Read on for thieves in Noosa and Estonian composers. *** Sean: Past Drones tours [...]

Go east, young concert goer. Far east. As in point torwards New Caledonia and drive straight on til morning. Yup it's 'Sup's favorite time of year - festival season! - and we're totally stoked to be adding Splendour in the Grass to our roster. It's an annual event Down Under that incorporates a banging lineup with local arts, cuisine and enviro-initiatives (attendees have the option of adding a carbon offset fee to their ticket purchase). Oh, yeah, last year's fest sold out in 5 hours, so read on [...]
As a music blogger, my existence depends upon this kind of golden discovery. And, as a recession statistic, my current well-being is totally reliant on hearing pieces of pure music brilliance such as this... The Middle East are a 6-piece out of Townsville, Australia. They've apparently been around for a while, but having recently signed with Spunk Records, they have just released their first EP, Recordings of the Middle East . Their music is in the same kinda folksy anthem mould of Arcade Fire, but it's the slower acoustic [...]
Aussie band Augie March has seven Arias (the Down Under Grammy), has become one of the best-selling bands at home - regularly going platinum - and won nearly universal critical praise for frontman/songwriter Glenn Richard's organic, non-gimmicky pop/rock songs. Reminiscent of fellow travelers Crowded House, Augie March still don't have a U.S. home for their latest fine work Watch Me Disappear . More on Augie March at DC here . As we wonder why, we'll check out the video for their "Farmer's Son": Myspace [...]
