The recession still got a grip on your pockets to where Nytol isn't in the budget?, Well, if you tuned into the fraternity of late-night hosts this week as they ran through monologues and musical guests, some of that mindless dribble might have put you to sleep while some of it might have also been the reason why you were rocking bags under your eyes like they were made by Gucci. Here are a few highlights and not-so-highlights from the week that was. 50 Cent - Jimmy Kimmel Live!, November 18 [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Ben Shaberman's essay collection The Vegan Monologues is more than a book about not eating animals. Sherman touches on political, social, and environmental issues while recounting his own experiences, always in his humorous yet poignant voice. In his own words, here is Ben Shaberman's Book Notes music playlist for his essay collection, The Vegan Monologues : [...]
With the 2010 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival scheduled to get underway a little less than five months from now, we are finally starting to get an idea of what the lineup will look like. According to a source with knowledge of the festival's plans, Muse will serve as a headliner for the Indio, CA event, set to take place from April 16-18. This will mark the British outfit's first appearance at Coachella since 2004 and will come amidst what will likely be a summer chock-full of tour dates in support of [...]

You know that one song, the one you love because the lyrics seem like the songwriter just reached inside your head and grabbed them? The Avett Brothers continue to make those perfect songs for me on their latest album, I and Love and You, released in late September. In their first major studio record, the Avett Brothers continue to establish themselves as an important American group with an unstoppable voice. Their unique blend of bluegrass-folk-punk translates well to a major label, without many moments of "Oh, they sold [...]

The Avett Brothers brought their new single, "Slight Figure of Speech," onto Fallon last night, trying their best to bring a hootenanny experience to late night TV (and sorta succeeding, if you count those three people who dance in the background). Two things of note: One, scatting is never a good vocal technique, unless you're Cab Calloway, and two, a cello is not a rocking instrument, and should not be played standing up while howling. Avett Brothers' I and Love and You is out now.
The Avett train is still trucking full speed ahead. What do you think of the new 'stache? The Avett's will be back in town for a two night stint in Boulder. More details here . Thanks AudioPerv for the video! the Avett Brothers-I and Love and You [mp3] Date City Venue Going Tickets [...]

At the cool little space known as Public Assembly, Babelgum and the Ice Cream Man decided to throw a party last night (Nov. 17th). Not only was there an open bar and free ice cream to celebrate the completion of the Ice Cream Man's journey across America and the music festival scene , but musical acts Kurt Vile and Times New Viking were set to entertain the assembled mass. Not bad for a Tuesday. The space was clamoring, the alcohol was flowing, and clusters of chatty people seemed ready for some [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]
Everyone's talking about The Avett Brothers lately, but there's a good reason for all the chatter. The group's latest offering, the Rick Rubin-produced I And Love And You , is charming just about everyone, fans both new and old. As a result, the boys - Seth and Scott Avett , along with Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon - are hitting the road... again ! The near five month-long trek kicks off literally at the end of the year, starting in the south, with a special New Year's Eve show in Asheville, [...]
