The New Collisions debut EP "Invisible Embraces" Boston's The New Collisions have gone from an unknown club band to one of the northeast's hottest acts. Fresh off of two 300+ person shows at the CMJ Music Marathon, a national tour with The B-52s and Blondie, The female-fronted outfit release their debut EP, " Invisible Embraces " this week, and their music is described as influenced by "New Wave explosion of '77-'83, plus the early 60s of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson". The band first caught the attention [...]

New Music this Week ! Someone You Should Know BEST START EVER ? - It's hard to imagine things going better for any band in it's first year these days. This is the story of The New Collisions from Boston who release their second EP album, Invisible Embraces, tonight. (This one's almost sure to be a sold-out show tonight, thanks in [...]

This has been The New Collisions ' year, due to both their incredible breakout success... and the fact that this is pretty much the only year they've been in existence. How did they do it? We asked guitarist Scott Guild to tell us their story... BBC : First, introduce yourselves... SG : Sarah Guild: vocals; Scott Guild: guitar; Alex Stern: bass/vocals; Casey Gruttadauria: synth/keys; Zak Kahn: drums BBC : You guys shot up seemingly out of nowhere; what are the origins of the band? How'd [...]

Sorry folks have had a busy few days. Will race through this for the sake of getting it done. All this music is awesome. Including this Disconet remix of a golden Hamilton Bohannon tune which many may recognise as being manically reworked in Oizo's Gay Dentists. Funky stuff. As I've said before, the most recent Disconet greatest hits releases have been right on the money - there's an amazing Imagination megamix sort of thing on this one too. Bohannon - Let's Start the Dance (Disconet Remix) [ buy ] [...]

While not technically a Halloween song (is there actually one besides the Rocky Horror Picture Show or Monster Mash?), Rock Lobster by the B-52's is a sort of weird song with a ton of slightly spooky organs. I love it though, finding a Rock Lobster out of the blue would be pretty scary. That makes it Halloweenie to me, plus everybody had matching towels! Go eat some candy. ______________________________ _______Pylon - BeepDFA has reissued Athens, GA post-punk legends Pylon's second LP, 1983's Chomp - following the reissue of their 1980 debut Gyrate. These guys were a huge influence on others around them - REM and The B-52s were all spawned the same scene and claimed to be influenced by Pylon. It has been expanded as Chomp More and includes the 7" version of "Crazy",

Bassist Tim Nordwind (right) and his bandmates OK Go has been one of the more underappreciated rock bands of the past several years. Their excellent last release, Oh No , was overshadowed by its equally excellent videos for "A Million Ways" and "Here it Goes Again" (the treadmill video), the latter of which won a Grammy Award. In January, they return with the Of the Blue Colour of the Sky , a record produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Flaming Lips) that channels Prince and shows off the band's funky side. [...]

Athens, GA was a Mecca for fresh young bands in the late '70s and early '80s. While local heroes the B-52's and R.E.M. took the lion's share of attention, there was an unfortunate disconnect between Pylon 's quirky brand of angular pop and commercial success. Despite their greatness, Pylon imploded only a few years into their career and called it quits in 1991 after three albums. Though the band played a few local reunion shows beginning in 2005, founding guitarist Randy Bewley died of a heart attack in Athens back in February. Thankfully, DFA Records has stepped in [...]

I just stumbled upon this edit in my music library. The original Love Shack by the always wonderful B-52s is a classic , no doubt about that. This obscure, info-lacking edit is somewhat dark, somewhat mysterious, and somewhat funky. Keeping the samples to a minimum and then repeating proves to be a really effective strategy for a booming disco track. - Love Shack (Unknown Edit) Graphic high five: Today and Tomorrow
New York underground band Whore's Mascara have just released their new single "Monogamous," which is set to put their name on the pop world. Click below for the band's info. Or go to their website. "If the Pet Shop Boys and Madonna got together and had a drunken, explicit menage-a-trois, Whore's Mascara might sound like their lovechild. Heavily influenced by the 80s, this band of lovers consists of the dark and brooding Brit Chaz Kourday, the Californian charmer Lonni Bahls, [...]

In case you don't already know: Dan Deacon will take your idea of live music, light it on fire, and throw it out into the unexpected void beyond to fend for itself. Don't walk into the show expecting anything because most likely whatever you would have expected will just be utterly trampled and ripped to shreds by the end of the night. And I mean that in the best way possible- just be a willing captive. To make up for his cancellation at FYF Fest, Dan played the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock last [...]
The Everyothers play a style of rock that is not immediately reconcilable to the rest of the rock bands out on the market. For example, during "Too Far", there is a definite psychedelic influence that makes itself known but the bulk of the track is a blend of the B-52s and The Offspring. This interesting [...]

ARTIST / BAND: Supercluster MP3: "Brave Tree" / "I Got The Answer" ALBUM: Waves FILE UNDER: Experimental / Rock / Psychedelic LABEL: Cloud Recordings INFO: With a blast of creative energy fueled by an enthusiasm for making music together, a fantastic combination of Athens, Georgia musicians formed Supercluster , the brainchild of Pylon vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay and Hannah Jones [...]

We sent Mark Stock to Austin City Limits because—well, because he wanted to go to Austin City Limits, and because we wanted to hear about it. It's going up a bit late due to unforeseen circumstances at the home office. -Ed. Friday Local legend and troubled grunge born songwriter Daniel Johnston plays a sobering set of hits. His arms shake violently and he can barely bring a bottle of water to his face. The guitar he plays convulses as though being electrocuted, the work of wheelbarrows worth of [...]

The Austin City Limits Music Festival celebrated its eighth anniversary this year, and it's gone beyond being Texas' little festival that could. It's now its own destination. All tickets to the three-day festival sold out earlier than they ever had before, and the lineup was one of its most diverse in its brief history. Tucked away in expansive Zilker Park in Austin, ACL usually feels like a musical marathon. Unlike other festivals that take place on remote locations where you have to camp or in the middle of cities where you can walk a few feet from the [...]
You could roam, as the B-52s put it during their early afternoon set Sunday on the AMD Stage. But as Mudstock 2009 came to a close (let the debate about the later-in-the-year dates begin) most ... Continue reading "Just When You Thought All the ACL Aftermath Was Over..." >

There was dust, rain, then mud. There was Eddie Vedder, sitting in with Kings Of Leon and calling Perry Farrell up onstage with Pearl Jam during a reportedly monstrous, festival headlining two-hour set. There were Brooklynites and Brits, Dave Matthews and Phoenix, The B-52s and Mos Def, John Paul Jones and Karen O. Basically there was a little of everything spread around Zilker Park this year, so we sent photographers Pooneh Ghana and Jon Gitchoff to capture what they could for our gallery. Enjoy.
