Wake up, ceiling stare, hurriedly dress and walk with the wind to work. Hear something. Stop. Gate off to the right. Press your ear to the door. Echoes, bouncing sounds. Eyes to the hole. Kids running around, innocence abound. Flowers in full bloom. Weeping trees. Afraid someone will see you watching. Realize you're late to work. Stop, breathe, ready yourself for the day. Think about joining the crowd of kids and what could have been. Wait. Gate opens. Little redhead asks if you want to play their game. You're hesitant, say no thanks, I'm all grown up. She asks why. Squeezed out of our inbox in the last couple of weeks, this two part edition for Nov 09 has some great tunes. The first part is consisted mainly of indie / indiepop / folk stuff, which makes up about 80% of our inbox. This months noteworthy promos include: + Brown Bird's sophomore " The Devil Dancing " on Peapod Records. An indie / folk group "resting wonderfully on a bed of cello, acoustic guitar, banjo and other assorted instruments". Emotional without any sentimentalism. Check out if you like Balmorhea . + [...]
It's our very first Local Lixx Austin episode and we couldn't be happier. Each week, we'll be bringing you 30 minutes of tunes from Austin area bands big and small. Enjoy! Zookeeper "Mama Jean" International Waters "Salt and Sea" Brazos "Tell" Follow That Bird "I Want You To Know" Beautiful [...]
You may know Western Vinyl best as the label that gave Dirty Projectors their start, or more recently, the home of Luke Temple's band Here We Go Magic, but the Austin-based label that Brian Sampson and Ryan Murphy founded in 1998 has spent the last decade quietly amassing a treasure trove of captivating sounds, from the artful chamber pop of Salim Nourallah to the solo work of Fleet Foxes drummer/singer J. Tillman to the electro-acoustic ambient music of Bexar Bexar, Sampson's working alias, who modestly avoided mentioning his own project when we pulled him away from his busy schedule [...]

I am not a big purveyor of music videos as I am more about the music than the video - if you know what I mean. But sometimes a video adds even more to a song - I believe this is true for my favourite video from late last year and one from earlier this year. Last year Damien Jurado's "Caskets" absolutely blew me away, and still does. The fact that it is basically a family affair (his brother Drake is the "patient") simply makes it even better - you couldn't have picked better individuals to play all [...]

There is nothing explicitly bad about Wild Beasts ' newest, Two Dancers. The songs move along nicely, flow well enough into each other, and keep up a consistent tone. The musicianship is entirely adequate. The problem? There's nothing exciting. And so it goes. The only notable issue I have with the album is its lyricism, which ranges from acceptable to, um, gems like these, from "The Fun Powder Plot:" "This is a booty call; my boot up your arse hole. / This is a Freudian slip; my slipper in your bits." [...]

I've mentioned the wonderful Balmorhea a couple of times now I think, and I really think that if you haven't been tempted to check them out yet it's high time that you stopped resisting and just gave in. They are simply lovely. If you're lucky enough to be in Europe, and not languishing away in a touring vacuum like I am here in Oz, you'll be able to catch them live throughout October - go here for more info. Baleen Morning - Balmorhea [...]

(Generationals At Waterloo Records In Austin) We've been friends with Grant Widmer & Ted Joyner since their days in The Eames Era. Their new band, Generationals, has earned some great reviews for their debut album Con Law, which just hit stores recently. The guys have hit the road on a Park The Van tour across the west coast and have been making periodic updates from the road exclusively for The Futurist. Here's their final update… We're back home and we had such a fun time. What [...]

Quite possibly the only time I'll ever say this (...with sincerity): I hope you weren't reading Knox Road this week. It's been too nice outside, and I wouldn't blame you - I'd actually think something's wrong with you. Unless you're one of our Antarctic readers. (In that case, I don't mean to make you jealous - keep on reading!) Regardless, the rundown... [image via ] Monday: Sufjan Stevens: is he back? Where's the Montana album? Tuesday: Sea Wolf's "Stanislaus" MP3 plus [...]
While ostensibly only a mere remix album, this is actually something far more miraculous and novel: a second chance. The original All is Wild, All is Silent was a frustrating and somewhat clumsy album by a generally good band that seemed to have lost their way. Fortunately, eleven of Balmorhea's talented pals have helpfully erased their mistakes and resurrected the material as a far more compelling and impressive work. Every band should get friends like these.

You may remember Austin's Balmorhea from a previous post several months ago. But with Smansmith graciously informing us of a remixed All Is Wild, All Is Silent , I thought now would be as good a time as ever to go into just how much I've grown to love the non-remixed All Is Wild, All Is Silent (you can find a similar sentiment on Heartache with Hard Work ). I've been thinking about this for a while, as the album may very well top my year end [...]
