Expectations are a tricky thing. We all have them, but sometimes we put the object of that affection on such a high pedestal that those expectations are bound to be disappointed no matter what the outcome. What's more, if you're one of the lucky few that are constantly gratified by those expectations being met, you begin to lose the innocence and joy of life's variability. You become dull, as does everything around you. Most of us, especially with the music we love, demand too much of a future we can't see. Sometimes things work out, other times they don't, but [...]

Last night was the tour opener for Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB. It was a busy night as the band played until Midnight, performed a five-song double encore and debuted four tunes. Two of the songs were brand new and two were tracks originally found on Phish's Party Time album that accompanied their 2009 release Joy in the long-delayed Joy Box set. [Photo by Tom Daly] You can listen to all four tunes right here and right now thanks to the lightning fast turnaround of taper Craig [...]

Do you ever listen to an album and think man this is just so good? For me this was the case with the latest release from Husky rescue. Chatting with Sean, I now remember him turning me onto this band sometime back pre-BIYL days. The promise the band showed on the previous two albums have all come wrapped up in this one and then some. This is an early contender for album of the year! It's beauty personified. Simplistic yet full of layered complexity. All the dreamy wintry sparse soundscapes are still there in abundance but with added accessibility. Somehow [...]

Photo by DeGross Punk Photography Text by Cosmo Lee PR is not something most nascent bands worry about. Their first concerns are usually stable lineups, local shows, and maybe a demo or two. But right out of the box Wolvhammer got called "racists," which led to the requisite Internet damage control. The issue was this: the Minneapolis band's logo (see kick drum above) resembles that of the Hammerskins, a white power organization whose logo evidently comes from the fictional neo-Nazi group [...]

It's not surprising that Matthew Barber's upcoming release - True Believer - is flying under the radar of most of the sites I read and most of the music loving public in general. Barber is easy to classify - essentially he's a rock solid song writer that could charm you with just an acoustic or a piano - but the surprising range he presents when he writes songs makes it almost to lock into a sound or style. His understated arrangements consistently display his talent, but really don't translate into press quotes and hyperbole. He can't be put [...]
DAM FUNK ON TOUR! GET READY. Dam Funk is on the road in support of his epic five volume masterpiece, Toeachizown. Released last fall on Stones Throw, Toeachizown was embraced by critics and fans alike. Keeping the funk movement alive and well at his club night, Funkmosphere, in Los Angeles, Dam is ready to give the rest of the country a taste. Check out the love for Dam Funk, because there's a lot: Dâm's specialty lies in 80s-style analog fizziness once spearheaded by the [...]

Well, we don't usually do this, but seeing as how Van Dyke Parks is a living legend and his Portland show is at Mississippi Studios on Wednesday (inconveniently, the same day WW comes out), we decided to run an extended Q&A with him a couple days before the article hit the racks. Enjoy! -Ed. Van Dyke Parks plays Portland Wednesday. Immediately tweet the following peeps: 1) Beach Boys/Brian Wilson obsessives, 2) students of rock history and 3) anyone interested in the intersection of popular and classical music. Talk about a rare opportunity: Though Parks [...]
The entirety of this past weekend was filled with Unsound moments, but before the mayhem began on Friday evening I attended a screening for what will be part of the forthcoming At The Gates box set. The first disc is comprised of 'Under a Serpent Sun: The Story of At the Gates,' which was filmed and directed by founding member Anders Björler, who was in attendance that afternoon. With a band

Wilkosz + Way Under normal circumstances, it'd be logical to consider the record that followed a band's breakthrough album through the lens of how those successes might have affected their creative process and output. You can't quite do that in the case of Woodpigeon's newest record Die Stadt Muzikanten , however, because even though its predecessor Treasury Library Canada was the album that brought the Calgary outfit national recognition via the Polaris Prize long list, Muzikanten was already completed and [...]

Unless you've been living in an isolated, internetless location for the last four years, you're likely aware of Daytrotter . The site started in 2006 and, in the four years since, has provided listeners with nearly ten million free, live tunes from their favorite bands. I will say that again for dramatic effect and because I enjoy repeating myself: ten million tunes. Free. As important as providing music lovers with access to all of those sessions, Daytrotter offers a reminder of just how pure and rewarding it is to really love, and really appreciate, music is. Stripped [...]
Last nite, I watched the Super Bowl, because I am currently working in a mainstream office environment, and I secretly feel insecure when every1 else is talking abt a mainstream event, yet I don't have a progressive opinion to 'share' that goes over every12 heads. The Super Bowl seems like a more fulfilling viewing event than awards shows like the Oscars or Grammys or the BCS championship because you have 2 forces/teams 'battling' to be the champion, instead of just voter opinions and computer algorithms. Did u have a 'Super Bowl party' with chips, dips, meats, brewskies, [...]
... And we're back. Sorry for the silence on the blog the last few weeks. I was pretty consumed with campaign work for most of the latter half of January (and the beginning of February), and didn't have much in the way of free time to devote to the blog. However, now that the primaries are over, things are essentially back to normal, so hopefully the blog will be too. Anyway, here's what's going on in Chicago this week in terms of shows. Not a huge week, at least in terms of stuff I'm looking [...]
