50 Cent showed up at the New Moon premiere on Monday for what seems like absolutely no reason, but after seeing his unusually chipper Tonight Show appearance we think we see where he's going. Clad in Burberry and a surely comfy lack of self-awareness, Fiddy explained his befriending of Bette Midler, his attempts to create his own brand of condoms, and the sale of his "mandatory" stripper-pole equipped Connecticut estate. In other words, he projected the complete opposite of the persona his new album cover for Before I Self Destruct [...]
Nat King Cole's sugar-swirled songs echo through Walmart walkways lined with stockings and ornaments. Price-drops of epic proportions are slated for a Friday after Thanksgiving that is sure to leave at least one Midwesterner trampled to death. It's with these staples the holiday season descends upon us and I turn once again to the annual duty of procuring a Christmas wish list from which my grandparents will glean inspiration. But this year is much, much different from the last... sigh ... for I received " The Wire " box set on Christmas last year. What more does [...]
The Balcones are a three piece from Ottawa, who have recently relocated to Toronto to attend school. They consist of Jacquie Neville, Steve Neville and Liam Jaeger. On the CD you can hear the occasional three part harmonies for mostly upbeat, catchy song with super catchy riffs. The stand out song on the CD has to be Battle Royale . I played this for Ricky and his response to me was "Man, that Balconies song you played for me was awesome". My response to him was "Yah, too bad it is the [...]

Lemmy Kilmister is featured in the current issue of Rolling Stone . The writer called him "rock and roll's Zelig ," and I think the article laid out a pretty compelling case for him: He was Jimi Hendrix 's roadie; he gave Sid Vicious bass lessons; he attended some of The Beatles ' Cavern Club shows. On top of all that, he's Lemmy, for chrissake. Is there anyone else who has a greater claim Rock and Roll Zelig? Please confine your answers to musicians. I [...]

Using this and this , oh and this as conclusive evidence, can we sheepishly proclaim that indie has gone mainstream? Failing that, can we at least admit that repackaging the aesthetic of city-dwelling, latte swilling young people is making someone, somewhere a shit load of money?. Let's be real people, it is. And though marketeers may not understand your brake-less transportation, nut-hugging denim, or dissonant music they definitely understand how to sell you shit, or at the very least, they understand how to sell shit to your little brother. This [...]

I have longed for a live gig here over in Perth and the day was finally here. They are Rockstars, at least according to one of their songs. Are they really? Death Disco warmed up the dancefloor with the familiar indie electronic action, robot rock and electro excess, a reminiscent of the good ol' TAG nights. After a fairly long wait, headliners Does It Offend You, Yeah? enter to a reception as feverish as their music. Everything from there on was spectacular from start to finish. [...]
After the memory-erasing debauchery of its Melbourne leg , Absolut 15 hits Sydney tomorrow night (Thursday) with a roster of 15 DJ's charged with just 15 minutes to win over the masses and claim $1000 for a charity of their choice, $1000 for themselves and of course the pride of being crowned 2009 IAAW DJ'S ROCK winner. Pedestrian will be on ground to film and photograph all the action and we'll even try our hand at taking out the top prize (we've started by sourcing R Kelly tracks and looking up "beat match" on Wikipedia). The [...]
Monday, August 31, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Last night I watched Battle Royale, which Quentin Tarantino called his favorite film from the last 20 years, and I absolutely loved it. Maybe not to the point where I'd put at the top of my own list, but it's certainly worth multiple viewings. Despite being one of my favorite bands, I have not being doing a good job of keeping up with what the Postmarks having going on. So, of course, I totally missed out [...]
To begin the effort to answer this important question - and see that there is a victor in our Battle Royale - I'm gonna say "Everybody's Talking" from Midnight Cowboy . Have you heard heard or thought of this song without immediately thinking of the movie? Have you ever thought of the movie without hearing the song in your head? Original post blogged on b2evolution .

If you know Japanese cinema, you know of a sub-genre characterized by buckets of blood. If you know buckets of blood, you've seen the film Battle Royale by Kinji Fukasaku . The whimsical tale of young students forced to fight to the death on a secret island. At the mercy of an insane script reminiscent of Lord of the Flies , the students participate in this deathmatch while their backstory/persona unfolds in dramatic brutality. I'm not personally into the whole Japanese horror gore film scene, but this classic is [...]
Quentin Tarantino the always polarizing auteur, pop culture junkie and former video store clerk threatens to polarize cinephiles further with his list of favourite films from 1992 to the present, or the period of time he has been a filmmaker. As expected, Tarantino's eclectic list skews towards the violent with foreign cult favourites (Battle Royale), indie hits (Boogie Nights, Lost In Translation) and Keanu Reeves fronted blockbusters (The Matrix, Speed) sitting alongside some pretty questionable mentions (Team America). As always Mr. Tarantino discusses the films with a mixture of wide-eyed hyperbole, sweeping hand gestures and frenetic ADD [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Director Quentin Tarantino talks about his 20 favorite films since he became a director in 1992. I could honestly listen to Tarantino talk about movies all day. He might not always hit on all cylinders with his movies, but the guy is a supreme movie nerd. Just wishing he talked a little bit more about the movies here on this list, many of them are personal favorites as well. [ via ] Here's the full list in handy text form: Battle Royale [...]

On the ride in today I heard The Stooges ' "No Fun" and The Who 's "Getting in Tune" and the following questions occurred to me for possible discussion here in the Halls of Rock: What's the most stunning entry by a soloing guitar on record? What's the tastiest intro lick by a bass guitar on record? I think you can figure out which songs led to each question. I'm not asking these questions, I should add, to [...]
