In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]
Having my blog has introduced me to tons of bands. Sometimes if I am lucky enough, I have been able to become friends with members of bands. It is like a dream come true to chat it out with real artists!! One band that I have stayed in close contact with is Local Natives . I have been addicted to their beautiful tunes every since I received my first email about them. It's all history since then! I couldn't just be there friend though; it was time to do some professional blogging! Matt Frazier, the drummer of [...]

I'm going to do something different here. Have you ever had the experience of going to a show, only to find out that the band you were there to see wasn't the headliner? If you go to shows a lot, it happens, especially when each band on the bill is at similar places in their careers. Well that's exactly what happened the other night at D.C.'s ever so tiny Red and Black. While the Evangelicals were set to be the nights closer, Holiday Shores were the reason I was there. It wasn't anything personal, just happenstance that they [...]

An online tour: what a great concept. It allows a band with no means of world exploration (i.e. minimal cash, unacceptable transport, no Samsonite baggage, etc.) to tour the world through the eyes of blogs. FensePost is excited to premiere (for Bellingham and the rest of the world) the Candy Claws video for "Island Grows". So come one, come all; see the wondrous Candy Claws, one of 2009's hottest new acts, perform their songs acoustically in videos premiered on sites that span the world. Candy Claws' style [...]
...at least according to NPR listeners . Check it out after the jump, then read and listen to the whole All Songs Considered piece HERE . I've really enjoyed reading all these "decade-end" lists so far, and in my opinion this list seems to come closest to accurately reflecting the decade in music. If you're interested, you can also find a running list of such lists at largehearted boy . Check 'em out and see what made the decade in music for everyone. Here's NPRs list of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings": [...]

It has become a worldwide cult, and whether you're Team Edward or Team Jacob (I'm all for the Cullen), one thing's for sure, you'll be seeing New Moon, the second instalment of the Twilight saga, in cinemas in this week (squeel!). Of course, I can't give you a head's up on the actual film yet, but one thing I can tell you, Twilighters, is how AWESOME New Moon's soundtrack is going to be. If there was an award for the coolest movie soundtrack, like, ever - this record would have to win, hands down. The CD is filled [...]

We've been on hiatus this week test driving cars and listening to snarky salesmen pitches. What I wanted was a sports car so rad it would magically melt the clothes off any hottie on the street. Alas, what I got was a whole lot different. W e ended up with an affordable and easy on the gas Kia Sportage. I will say for a factory job, the audio system is banging, equipped with Sirius sat radio, a USB connection, iPod/mp3 player jacks. It also comes with all [...]
You don't even have to be an online music nerd like me (and maybe you), to realise that the music industry is in a state of flux. Whatever your position on the digital democracy that music sharing online has fostered, whether you stand arm and arm with Reverend John Mclure who thinks the digital revolution has opened up the doors to a world of music you might never have heard, or you stand behind Lilly Allen who rather hypocritically thinks it's an evil theft of an artists work whilst sitting pretty on a major label and making her own mixes [...]

By Carrie Brownstein As beardy indie-folk takes over, is rock losing its edge? (Getty/Fergus McDonald) These are strange times in rock music when the genre's big brothers and elder statesmen -- those pillars of manliness, with upper bodies so capable and broad that it looks as [...]
Last year, the Chicago based music venue as Schubas brought the likes of Cursive, Department of Eagles, Bishop Allen, and Bear Hands for its annual five-day winter celebration/music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows . We were there and wrote a lot about it . Anyhow, for its 2010 edition, Schubas, now with their new venue, Lincoln Hall, available to provide some extra space, has taken TNK up a notch. After all, include to take part in this year's festivities, which takes place from January 13-17 at both Schubas and Lincoln Hall, are The Cribs, Voxtrot, Final Fantasy, [...]

by chuck bell Touring is undoubtedly the most difficult part of maintaining a band. Traveling nonstop, living in close quarters and trying to subsist on little to no money is often too much for these musicians to handle. Despite the fact that its members knew each other since junior high (and in some cases preschool), Bear vs. Shark ultimately fell victim to the hardships of the road. Growing up as childhood friends in Highland and White Lake, Michigan, Marc Paffi, John Gaviglio, Derek Klegsen and Mike [...]

From the moment it was heard in its live pre- Bitte Orca form, folks were comparing " Stillness Is The Move ," aka the no. 1 song in Brooklyn , to Mariah Carey. (And, as a helpful full-disclosure, in the press release I wrote for the record I said the song's "ready for popular hip-hop radio, making the same gesture as recent work by Lil Wayne and Kanye West, albeit from the opposite side of culture.") So, no, it's not surprising Solange Knowles -- supposedly responsible for getting Jay-Z and her sister [...]
