(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) Bear In Heaven just released Beast Rest Forth Mouth their sophomore LP and second release via our friends at the Hometapes label. Before their show at Lit Lounge last month during CMJ I [...]
by marisa brown I'm focusing on vinyl this week in A Fistful of Dollars , which is - let's be honest, one of the main reasons to seek out buying music these days. ► Nite Jewel - "I Was Born" b/w "Suburbia" ($4.99) First up is the Nite Jewel, whose 73 is now available on the Stones Throw site but put out through the [...]

photos by Ryan Muir DOWNLOAD: Bear in Heaven - Wholehearted Mess (MP3) STEREOGUM : I've been to Barcade [where you bartend]. Used to live a block away from it. Good beer selection, but sometimes the guys playing the games can get a bit too aggro. Have you ever had to intervene with a drunken Dig Dug fan and a battered arcade game? Bear in Heaven member Joe [...]
local natives - camera talk local natives - airplanes (bbc radio 1 live in session) [from last.fm "Local Natives are a Southern California act preparing to release their debut full length. Upon first listen though, it seems as if there's no way that can be the case. These songs roll by with the ease, confidence and chemistry of a much more seasoned act. My initial reaction is to compare them to bands known for their celebratory bombast like Broken Social Scene but with the rich orchestration of groups like Grizzly [...]

Written by Larry Weaver and Adam Clair 01. Graze After paying such close attention to the pre- Merriweather Post Pavilion material that Animal Collective was working out live, "Graze" was the most glaring omission when the album finally came to be. The song starts off like a tripped-out Disney score, with a tentative orchestral backing setting the mood. As Avey Tare sings, "Let me begin // Feels good 'cause it's early," listeners clued into what a sunrise would sound [...]
Will at WDUB interviewed Adam Wills, bass player for Bear in Heaven for their station blog, www.911-blog.com "911-Blog was fortunate enough to score an email interview with Adam Wills of Bear In Heaven, recent recipient of Pitchfork's "Best New Music" honor for their new album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth. If you haven't gotten around to listening to Bear In Heaven yet, their sound treads a unique path between electronica, prog, and southern rock. Look for downloads of their tracks "Wholehearted Mess" and "Lovesick Teenagers" (my new favorite song) after the interview. [...]

I'm going to do something different here. Have you ever had the experience of going to a show, only to find out that the band you were there to see wasn't the headliner? If you go to shows a lot, it happens, especially when each band on the bill is at similar places in their careers. Well that's exactly what happened the other night at D.C.'s ever so tiny Red and Black. While the Evangelicals were set to be the nights closer, Holiday Shores were the reason I was there. It wasn't anything personal, just happenstance that they [...]

The idea that Earth has been visited by aliens at some point in the distant past is not a new one. In Sumer, the alien Gods were known as the Anunnaki. While in Greece, they are known as Annodoti and in the Celtic lore, the Tuatha de Danaan. Tthe Semetic scriptures (Torah, Talmud, Old Testament, and other Apocryphal texts like the Book of Enoch), call them The Nephilim, The Sons of God, or The Watchers. We are told the gods themselves had their own monarchy, with laws of succession similar to our own, and they built a [...]

hometapes : Bear In Heaven on ABC! Click to see the band and Beast Rest Forth Mouth featured on Pitchfork's New Music Monday segment. "Bear In Heaven has figured out how to render bodily sensations, fears, and passions into what feel like effortless three to four minute pop songs. This is the sort of thing that lesser bands might try their entire careers to do and never accomplish." - Eric Harvey, Pitchfork on ABC

Bear in Heaven recently received a sterling review on Pitchfork and it was pretty spot on. Layer upon layer of drone-y guitars, reminiscent of personal favorites A Place to Bury Strangers (minus the darkness), contribute to the expansiveness of Bear in Heaven. While tending to the abstract on some tracks, Wholehearted Mess is an absolute gem. Vocals float atop an ocean of sound that occasionally crests into massive choruses. Listening to Bear in Heaven is what I imagine Big Sky country out west sounding like if it was a hipster band. I'm going to say it one more time because [...]
Monday: The Jesus Lizard @ Irving Plaza 9pm $25 [ tix ] This week as folks look forward to next week's holiday a number of indie rock heavyweights will be hitting town to deliver the goods before the Holiday Season truly kicks into gear. First up are heavy rock luminaries The Jesus Lizard. They already left us in awe with their 9/11 references and stage diving at ATP NY, then blew away the invited crowd at the Vice Halloween bash, now their doing a few shows that aren't quite as exclusive as those [...]
Going to a concert whilst wearing a suit is an interesting experience, especially after previously being at a do at the Polish Embassy (yes, really). Ignoring the puzzled glances from my fellow gig-goers at the Shepherds Bush Empire, I settled into the capacity crowd, sadly not at the front. What, you think I'm going to get creases in these trousers? Mew, in case you didn't already know, are one of the most adventurous rock bands around these days. Their songs blend heartstoppingly brilliant bits with slightly more tedious bits. Their best songs blend heartstoppingly brilliant bits [...]

Bear In Heaven Beast Rest Forth Mouth Hometapes Records [2009] Fire Note Says: This album has an immediate appeal that leaves a lasting impression! Album Review: On their sophomore record Beast Rest Forth Mouth , Brooklyn's Bear In Heaven successfully walk the fine line of blending an indie psychedelic undertone with spontaneous prog moments that all get fenced in with solid pop anthems. It is a sound that [...]
