Festival 8 ( more pictures by Fresh Bread ) Dead heads and pot heads take note . While the straight economy goes up in smoke with double digit unemployment, job prospects for hippies are booming -- and not just for boomers. At the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) they're looking to hire an official Grateful Dead archivist. And in Denver, where Colorado's medical marijuana industry is legally flourishing, there are these two recent job postings: The alternative newspaper Westword is [...]

Scotland's finest Detroit techno artists. Don't get the credit they deserve South of the Border. And Scotland doesn't seem to love its electronic innovators in the same way that Postcard is revered. Artists, club owners, label owners. What more do you want? I guess we could do without more re-releases of Positive Eduction mixes. Like so many techno artists, Glasgow, Scotland-based Slam is a duo, comprising Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan. They also embody the genre's tradition of not limiting themselves to one activity. Slam started out in the [...]

![[New/Live] The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Say No To Love](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2141211_lg.jpg)
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have been one of the coolest things to come out of 2009. I had no expectations from their self titled record when it came out earlier this year, but it turned out to be a great pop rock record that may be up there in my favorite albums of 2009. The wonderful NYC Taper recorded their set at the Bell House from November 15th. This includes a recording of a brand new song called "Say No To Love". It isn't anything different from The Pains output so far, but that's fine [...]
The latest from Elijah , My Cupcake Future Is In Your Hands , is a two part DJ mix compiled to showcase the music Elijah is listening to and making now. My Cupcake Future Is In Your Hands features unreleased remixes and never before heard productions by Elijah. Also, it has a silly name. My Cupcake Future intro jj - Ecstasy Elijah - Extended Eye Contact Colorpulse - Glorious Dawn Virtual Boy - Anything Goes Olive - You're Not [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]
Eli Paperboy Reed @ The Bell House ( more by Jacob Blickenstaff ) Tickets are on sale for the recently-added Neon Indian show at Brooklyn Bowl . Soul man Eli "Paperboy" Reed is playing a show at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night (11/21). Tickets are on sale for that too. Eli, who also plays in Salem, Massachusetts tonight (11/20), was supposed to hit DC on the 22nd, but that's been cancelled "due to some logistical [...]

[ photo by nyctaper ] Of all the bands that performed at the Slumberland Records 20th Anniversary concert last weekend at Bell House, Lorelei was perhaps the band that was the most pleasant surprise. As the concert was split between "new" SLR artists (Pains, Stilts, Pants) and old (Linton, Nord Express, Ropers), Lorelei fall somewhat in the middle. As a band that SLR released early - " The Bitter Air " 73 was the 12th release in the label's catalog - one would expect that their performance would have taken on a [...]

Recommended Show: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2009 BARONESS, EARTHLESS, & US CHRISTMAS @ BOWERY BALLROOM 6 Delancey Street Manhattan, NY 10002 $15, 8:30PM This is going to be a heavy one. With Baroness headlining Bowery Ballroom and Earthless and US Christmas opening, this is going to be a metal bill that's sure to cause tinnitus. Plenty of other good shows going on tonight as well (Devo at The Fillmore, These United States at Mercury Lounge, and so on). The full list is after the jump. Devo @ The Fillmore Ill Ease @ Cake [...]

The Bloodsugars stellar debut album, I Can't Go On, I'll Go On was released this week on Engine Room Recordings. After their short Midwest tour last week, including a great show in Cincinnati, singer/guitarist Jason Rabinowitz was able to take some some time to answer some questions about the creative process and theme of the new album, some of their new favorite bands and the their new-found love for Bobby McFerrin. Atlas and the Anchor: My favorite song on I Can't Go [...]

You'd think with a name like Diamond Watch Wrists it'd be a flashy-ass glam rap record. No sir, and I'll thank you not to stereotype. This one totally slipped through my proverbial crack until it came up on my shuffle on a train ride, and I spent the next eight hours listening to it pretty much non-stop. It's so good. I don't care what Pitchfork says , it's so fucking good. So breathy and glacial and layered and gorgeous, like Bjork with five heads. It all sounds kind of samey, but the thing is that [...]
Crawling out from the dregs of Kansas City, I Love You offers up a wild amalgamation of dub, noise, punk and African pop with its latest album, Bell Ord Forrest (Joyful Noise). Opening single "The Colloquialism Is Simply 'Gas'" hypnotizes listeners with an infectious bass line and pulsating drums only to disintegrate into mountains of [...]
One of the surprise debuts of last year had to be Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... , a talk show featuring Costello pulling off the rare triple threat: host, performer and bandleader. Equal parts interview and jam session, the Sundance series relies upon Costello putting the artists at ease, getting even the prickliest of artists to open up and speak warmly about their influences. But, as Martin Mull once famously quipped, "talking about music is like dancing about architecture," and so it's the tremendous musical performances sprinkled throughout [...]

At the tour's request, we did not photograph the Swell Season. The photos are of the opening act Doveman. Since seeing the Swell Season 's fantastic performance at Berklee Performance Center, I've told several friends that I haven't seen "Once," the film that launched the duo of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and their real-life romance. Each time, I get the same reaction: my friend puts a hand to her chest and a hand on my arm, looks me straight in the eye and says, "You must see 'Once.' It's [...]

When it comes to reunions, Brooklyn's Bell House will be getting a double serving on December 3rd. On that day, both the Pulsars , the '90s synth pop band that was once considered to be the "next big thing," and U.K. indie rockers Field Music will reunite after lengthy absences for one hell of a reunion show. And, perhaps most incredibly, tickets are still on sale . If you don't know, the Pulsars (brothers Dave and Harry Trumfio) were one of the first bands to sign with Herb Albert and Jerry Moss' Almo Sounds [...]
