The one real benefit of my work is that I don't to see anything on the web until about 4pm. By the time I check the emails, tweets and facebook updates I'm usually so late to all the juicy debates it's hardly worth making a comment! I do think the Choice Music Awards is a worthwhile addition to our music world. Not only is it worthwhile to the bands, record labels and album sales but also for the debates, discussions and degrading remarks which result! See On The Record! [...]
The ten albums shortlisted for the Choice Music Prize were revealed moments ago on Today FM. Here are the ten for the Choice Prize this year. Delighted to see ASIWYFA get a nod as well as Julie Feeney and Valerie Francis in particular. It's a pity there was no room for David Kitt's The Nightsaver . I figured albums from BATS, The Holy Roman Army, Twinkranes and Patrick Kelleher were maybe a little too out there to all get on the list. I don't get the appeal of Duckworth Lewis Method myself but sure there ya go. After being a judge last year (list below), all I can say is good [...]

A little late, but better late than never. Here's my Top 10 Irish Albums of 2009... 10. And So I Watch You From Afar - And So I Watc You From Afar If Salvador Dali was still alive today, he may paint an album cover like that of ASIWYFA's debut album. Better still, if he was a musician, he'd probably make bizarrely brilliant instrumental tunes like the eleven shoegaze classics that appear on this debut album. [...]
After last year's succesful Irish Sound of 2009 post between myself and Peter over at 2UIBestow , we have teamed up again to highlight ten acts worth looking out for in 2010. We've picked five acts each, all of which could end up dominating the Irish music scene in the next twelve months. A Plastic Rose Belfast based A Plastic Rose consists of equal parts Sligo and Belfast and make the type of Indie Rock music Tim Wheeler dreams about. The vocals are shared by the contrasting styles of Ian and [...]
For a second year in a row Ronan over at Swear I'm Not Paul and myself have been working on creating a list of 10 Irish acts in alphabetical order who we believe will make considerable progress towards world domination in the coming 12 months. Ronan picked five acts and I picked five acts ready to invade your music world in 2010. Republic of Loose fans witnessed a vastly-changed line-up take to the Academy stage on Christmas Eve-Eve-Eve (December 22nd to the rest of you) for their sole Dublin headlining show of 2009. Founding members Mick and Dave Pyro, along with eponymous bassist Benjamin Loose, are all that remains of the old guard as cracks increasingly begin to appear in the Terenure funk-soul troupe's chiselled exterior. Personal difficulties and financial realities led guitarist Brez and keyboardist Deco to walk out earlier this year, and they've been dutifully replaced by the bloke with the beard and the guy in the [...]

The nominees for this year's IMRO Meteor Music Awards have been announced. There's the usual names and faces as well as the total lack of David Geraghty in the Best Irish Male category. Jack L? Seriously? Didn't he only release a Best of this year, and hasn't released a successful single in years. The Awards Show will be held at the RDS on Friday, February 19 2010, and will be presented by Amanda Byram. Westlife, Snow Patrol, the Script, Florence and the Machine, Paolo Nutini, The Coronas, and Pixie Lott are all set to play live on the night. [...]

It does only seem like last year when there was a debate in the media about what to call this decade. I've really enjoyed reading the various 'best of ...' lists in the media and on the blogsphere. This post aims to outline my perspective on the Irish Music Scene over the last decade! By the year 2000, we had accumulated a wealth of disposable income which in the main resulted in more of us attending gigs, more of us learning to play instruments and more [...]

Here's a list of my Favorite Songs Of 2009 . Granted, I may be missing some quality tunes and I've done my best not to repeat artists, but these 99 seemed to stick out the most. Please feel free to leave any thoughts/concerns and be on the lookout, tomorrow, for my Favorite Albums Of 2009 list. 99. Do Make Say Think - Do 98. Yo La Tengo [...]
